Page 178. SOME EXTRACTS FROM THE RECORDS OF YORK CO., VIRGINIA. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. June 25, 1677. Whereas James Lucas did break an instrumt of Mr. Charles Hansford called a Treble weh cost the said Hansford one pound eight shillings wch the said Lucas not denying in court is ordrd to pay the said Hansford the sum of one pound eight shil- lings or a treble of the same quality wth costs als Exn. HORSE RACE. May ye 24th 1704 In ye Suite Depending to this court between Thomas Rogers plt & Henry Hayward Junr Debts in an accou of Case Decland for Damages twenty pounds sterling Sustained by ye plt through Page 179. ye Defts stopping ye plts Horse in ye ninth day of November part nere Tiplady's Swamp ye sd plt & Mr. Richard Dixon then Run- ning a Race wth their two Horses for ye sume of Tenne pounds Sterling by meanes whereof ye sd Plaintiff lost ye said Race to his Damage as aforesaid to whc ye Deft pleaded not Guilty in maner and form and for tryall thereof both partys agreed at ye Barr to Reffer ye matter to ye Court for a Determination and Decision thereof who after hearing all Evidence produced and pleas made on both sides found no cause of accon wherefore ye suite is Dismist. ARSON. June ye 30th 1704. Bridgett, a negro woman Slave belonging to Mr. John Page of this county being Indicted for burning the buildings of ye sd John Page being arraigned pleaded guilty whereupon this Court doth award Judgement of Death upon her &c to be Hanged by the neck untill she be Dead. ORDINARY KEEPERS. March ye 20, 1704-'5. It is Ordered yt ye Clerk write a clause in ye condition of ye Ordinary Keepers Bonds for ye more due observance of the Sab- bath by keeping good Rules in their Houses then more p'ticularly & not to sell Strong drink or suffer any drunkenness in their Houses.
