Born in Simsbury, [Hartford Co.], Conn.; aged 35 years; 5 feet 11 inches high; dark complexion; dark hair; black eyes; by profession a cardwainer. Enlisted at Addison March 28 1814 for the period of the war and served in Capt. Wm. Miller's Company and Capt. Gideon Spencer's Company, 30th Regt. Ref: R. & L. 1812, AGO Pages 54, 55, 57. Additional Comments: Margaret Graham wrote that Elam Hays is her 4 great grandfather. Elam moved to Addison County, Vermont, and his son Harley Elam Hayes married a grand-niece of Gideon Spencer. The Hays/Hayes, Spencer and Day families intermarried.
