(Of course, at that time Morristown was in Orleans Co. not Lamoille, so the county name shows up as Orleans in many records...) I also included some other misc. information about this family at the end. Revolutionary War Pension Records for Crispus Shaw (Claim #S33658, W990-BLW) - Transcribed by Joyce [private], and Kevin Edward Spaulding Declaration by Crispus Shaw 13 May 1818 State of Vermont County of Orleans. On this thirteenth day of May in 1818 before me Samuel Cooke one of the assistant judges of the County Court within and for the County of Orleans personally appears Crispus Shaw aged fifty six years, resident in Morristown in the County of Orleans aforesaid being first duly sworn before me according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled "An Act to Provide for Certain Persons Engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War." That the said Crispus Shaw in the month of September 1778 entered the military service under Capt. Washburn, Major Farrant Commandant for three months _______ honorably discharged __________ two months on Rhode Island and at a ____________. That on the first day of April 1780 he enlisted in a company commanded by Capt. Tisdale which company was attached to a Regiment commanded by Col. Grayton of the Massachusetts line of continental establishment for the term of nine months, that he continued to serve his country till last of January 1781 when he was honorably discharged at West Point, State of New York, that owing to sickness he was unable to leave the service till the last of February in the year that he was in the battle when the British burnt(?) Bedford, Mass. That he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, that he has no(?) other evidence now in his power of his services except what is herewith transmitted and the said Crispus hath hereto subscribed his name. Crispus Shaw Sworn to and declared before me the day and year aforesaid Samuel Cook, Orleans County Court I, Samuel Cooke, ass't Judge of the County Court within and for the County of Orleans aforesaid do certify that it appears to my satisfaction that the said Crispus Shaw did serve in the Revolutionary War as stated in the preceding declaration against the Common Enemy and I now transmit the proceedings and testimony taken into and(?) before me to the Secretary for the War Department pursuant to the directions of the aforementioned act of Congress. Allen, Clerk, Notary Public Deposition by Darling Shaw 5 Jul 1819 July 5, 1819 State of new York Rensselaer County, I, Darling Shaw of Norwich in the County of Rensselaer being sworn, saith that this deponent enlisted in the American Army in the year 1780 for the term of nine months in the twelfth Massachusetts regiment commanded by Col. Sprout(?) in the company commanded by Capt. Burbank(?), and this deponent saith that this deponent knew his brother Crispus Shaw, now residing in Morristown, Sate of Vermont who at the same time served in the Regiment commanded by Col. Grayton in the company commanded by James Tisdale and this deponent knows that the said Crispus Shaw served nine months in the last mentioned regiment and company in the year 1780 and was then discharged having served the time for which he enlisted. Darling Shaw Sworn this 5th day of July 1819 David Bird(?), Judge of Rensselaer County Pleas(?) State of New York Rensselaer County, I certify that David Bird Junior Esquire whose signature is affixed to the within deposition was at the time the same purports to have been taken one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Rensselaer and further that I am acquainted with the handwriting of the said David Bird and only believe his signature to be in his own proper handwriting. Judge of Rensselaer Pleas Deposition by Eliphalet Whitney 13 Jul 1819 I, Eliphalet Whitney of Morristown, Orleans County of the State of Vermont, of lawful age, do testify and say that I have been intimately acquainted with Darling Shaw, brother to Crispus Shaw, who has made his declaration before the Hon. Samuel Cooke Esq. to obtain a pension agreeable to the provision of an act of Congress for that purpose, and do believe that the said Darling Shaw is a man of truth and veracity. Orleans County, Morristown, July 13, 1819 Sworn to and subscribed before me the day and year aforesaid and I certify that the above mentioned Eliphalet Whitney is a reliable witness. Samuel Cooke, Judge, Orleans County Deposition by Samuel Cooke 7 Sep 1819 September 7, 1819 State of Vermont Orleans County, I, Samuel Cooke, assistant Judge of the said Orleans County Court do hereby certify that the before and within named Crispus Shaw is a resident citizen of the state of Vermont in Morristown fourteen years to my knowledge and I fully believe that he was born in and has ever resided in the United States. In testimony whereof I set my hand at Morristown this seventh day of September the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen. Samuel Cooke Declaration by Crispus Shaw 28 Jun 1820 State of Vermont. On this 28th day of June, 1820 personally appeared in Open Court, Orleans County, being a court of record for said County of Orleans, constituted by a statute law of the state of Vermont, Crispus Shaw, of Morristown in said county, aged fifty eight years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows, on the first day of April 1780 enlisted under Captain Tisdale of Col. ____ regiment of the Massachusetts line of troops, that he enlisted for nine months and served until the last of January 1781, and by reason of sickness continued in the army until the last of February of the last mentioned year, also rendered other services to his country as will appear by the original declaration by me bearing date may 13, 1818 in consequence if said declaration I received a certificate for a pension from the war department number fifteen thousand two hundred thirty one. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it, as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War _____ on the 18 day of March 1818, and that I have not nor as any person trusts(?) for me my property or securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. Schedule: I live on a lot of land containing one hundred acres for which I agreed to give five hundred dollars, and have paid thirty dollars only and I am in debt sixty dollars. Personal Property, one cow, two cows hired for a year, four yearling cattle, three calves, fifteen sheep, four hogs, old household furniture of little value Occupation of Farmer, but by reason of a breech which I have had many years much disables me from labour, some times wholly Family: my wife, aged fifty four years, health poor and fast failing, son Crispus, aged nineteen years in common health, [Ansel(?)] aged eleven years in good health, daughter Cynthia aged seventeen years, healthy as common 2 Iron kettles, one grate, one dish kettle, two spiders, 2 flat irons, three old chests, eight old chairs, two old pails and two tables, one table some crockery and earthen ware, one plough, two chains, two Sythes, two hoes, and three old axes. Crispus Shaw Sworn and declared in open court this 28 day of June 1820 before me William Howe, Judge of Orleans Cty. Court Ira H. Allen clerk of Orleans County Court do hereby certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule thereto annexed and duly affixed from the records of the said court. And I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said Court that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid schedule is ninety three dollars, seventy cents. Shaw 4 Mar 1853 March 4, 1853 State of Vermont Lamoille County, I Benoni W. (?) Shaw of Morristown in the County of Lamoille and State of Vermont, aged 40 years, testify and say that Crispus Shaw, late of Morristown was a Rev. Pensioner, that he married Fanny Liscom, then of Elmore but now of Morristown in sd. county in the fall of 1840, she was his second wife and my step grandmother, my grandfather died on the 16th day of July aged about 83 years. I understand Fanny Shaw his sd. wife now remains unmarried and the widow of sd. Crispus Shaw. Morristown March 4, 1853 Benoni W. Shaw Sworn and subscribed on the day and year above written before me. I further certify that I am well acquainted with sd. affiant(?) and consider him to be a competent witness in any court ______ before signed and executed W. G. Ferrin(?) Master in Chancery Declaration by Joseph Sears 9 Mar 1853 State of Vermont Lamoille County, I, Joseph Sears of Morristown in the County of Lamoille and State of Vermont, aged sixty nine years, testify and say that I was well acquainted with Crispus Shaw for over thirty years previous to his death, also Fanny Shaw, his second wife, they were married 10 or 11 years past as was the report and lived together in my immediate neighborhood for a number of years, he died at this residence Morristown Corners, so called, within a very short distance of my own, his coffin was made at my shop and I was present at the funeral of sd. Crispus-six or seven years ago. He was a Revolutionary soldier and pensioner, he died on the 16th day of July 1845. According to the best of my knowledge Mrs. Shaw has never again married but remains his widow. Morristown, March 9 1853 Joseph Sears Sworn to and subscribed on the day and year above written before me I further certify that the above affiant(?) is a highly respectable man and a competent witness whenever called on to testify before me. W. G. Ferrin, Master in Chancery State of Vermont Lamoille County, I, Carlos S. Noyes, clerk of the county court for the County of Lamoille, State of Vermont, hereby certify that W. G. Ferrin of Johnson in said county, who has subscribed his name to the foregoing affidavits of Benoni W. Shaw and Joseph Sears, was at the time and still is a Master in Chancery, duly qualified and commissioned, that his signatures thereto are genuine and that he is authorized [by] the laws of this state to administer oaths. In testimony thereof I have here unto set my hand and affixed the seal of the County Court at Hyde Park this 11th day of March A.D. 1853 Carlos S. Noyes, Clerk Declaration by Rebecca W. Bailey 1 Mar 1853 State of Vermont Lamoille County , I, Rebecca W. Bailey of Elmore in the County of Lamoille and State of Vermont, aged fifty years, testify and say that I am and was on the 14th day of November A.D. 1840 the wife of George W. Bailey, Esquire who joined Crispus Shaw and Fanny Liscomb in marriage at sd. Elmore. I was present when they were married by my sd. husband G. W. Bailey at sd. Elmore on sd. 14th day of November A.D. 1840, they sd. Crispus and his wife lived together as man and wife until his death, about seven years past, that Fanny Shaw now remains unmarried and widow of sd. Crispus Shaw. I further say not. Rebecca W. Bailey Elmore March 1st A.D. 1853 Sworn to and subscribed before me on the day and year above written. I further certify that the reputation of sd. Mrs. Bailey is good for truth and is a competent witness in any court. V. W. Waterman _______ of _______ Declaration by George W. Bailey 11 Mar 1853 State of Vermont Lamoille County , I, George W. Bailey of Elmore in the County of Lamoille and State of Vermont, aged 54 years, testify and say that I was a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Lamoille for the year A.D. 1840 and authorized by the laws of the state to solemnize marriages, that by virtue of authority vested in me by the laws of the state on 14 day of Nov. A.D. 1840 I joined Crispus Shaw in marriage with Mrs. Fanny Liscom. They were both of Elmore in sd. County of Lamoille, sd. Crispus Shaw was a Revolutionary Pensioner at the time of his marriage to sd. Fanny, he, sd. Shaw, died about seven years past at Morristown and she now remains unmarried and is the widow of sd. Crispus Shaw, as I am informed and have no doubt. I further say not. George W. Bailey Sworn to and subscribed before me on the day and year above written. I further certify that the affiant is considered a man of good character for the truth, and is a competent witness in any court where called on to give evidence, these words interlined before execution of his affidavit V. Waterman of Morristown in said county, who has hereunto subscribed his name to the affidavit of George W. Bailey and Rebecca W. Bailey, was at the time and still is a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Lamoille duly qualified and commissioned according to law and that his signature to the same is genuine. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my official hand and affixed the seal of the county court at Hyde Park this 11th day of March 1853. Carlos S. Noyes, Clerk Declaration by V. W. Waterman 4 Mar 1853 State of Vermont Lamoille County , I, V. W. Waterman of Morristown in the County of Lamoille, aged forty two years, testify I was well acquainted with Crispus Shaw, late of Morristown, deceased was a Revolutionary Pensioner until his death, he died at Morristown as I have been informed and do not doubt on the 16th day of July 1845, and Fanny Shaw of sd. Morristown was the reputed wife of sd. Crispus, and now remains his widow, and further your deponent saith not. V. W. Waterman Morristown, March 4th A.D. 1853 Sworn to and subscribed by me on the day above written. I further certify that the Hon. V. W. Noyes, Clerk Declaration by Fanny Shaw 9 Mar 1853 State of Vermont County of Lamoille, On this ninth day of March A.D. 1853 personally appeared before Staughton S. Pike, Judge of Probate within and for the District of Lamoille Fanny Shaw, a resident of Morristown, sd. County of Lamoille and state aforesaid, aged sixty-six years who being duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made the act of Congress passed 3 day of Feb. A.D. 1853, and all other acts pertaining(?) thereto, that she is the widow of Crispus Shaw late of Morristown deceased and who was a Revolutionary Soldier, and drew a pension until he died under the act of AD 1818 of ninety six dollars per annum. I am not knowing to the particulars of my sd. husbands services. I was not the wife of his youth but his 2nd wife, he held a certificate of his services which I understand and verily believe was surrendered back to the proper office after his decease and at the time the fraction due at his death was paid, or if such was not the fact, the same is lost or mislaid and I have no knowledge. Declaration by George W. Bailey 11 Jun 1853 June 11, 1853 State of Vermont Lamoille County , I, George W. Bailey of Elmore in the County of Lamoille and State of Vermont, aged about 54 years, testify and say that in addition to a former affidavit by me made and supplemental to sd. affidavit already in the pension office of the United States as I am informed and verily believe, in the matter of Fanny Shaw, widow of Crispus, a Revolutionary Pensioner, regarding her marriage with sd. Crispus, that I never made any record of her sd. marriage with sd. Crispus or caused any to be made in the Town Clerks, or any other office, and none exists of their marriage but I did perform sd. marriage ceremony and pronounced them husband and wife, according to the laws of Vermont in the presence of my family, and other witnesses, as I have set forth in my former sd. affidavit which I consider unnecessary here to repeat. I again state that I was at the time a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Lamoille and State aforesaid, and authorized by the laws of Vermont to perform the marriage ceremony and further say not. Mower and Robert L. Hagerman (Morristown Historical Society, Morrisville, VT, 1982), Crispus Shaw moved to Morristown, VT in 1798 when there were only 12 families there. He was the first moderator of the Congregational Church when it was formed in 1807. (The Congretational Church was the first church in Morisville.) He was was on a committee to divide the town into school districts in 1806, and also was on a committe to organize financing for the first Town House in Morrisville in 1814.
