This copy contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ******************************************************** Litchfield Minn Nov 1st 1885 In compliance to circulars received from Pension Dpt relative to pension claim No 317157 My first residence after discharge from U.S. service Aug 9th 1865 was at Cabot Vermont. In the year 1870 removed to Litchfield Minn which place I have since resided. My occupation from several years and immediately prior to my enlistment was that of carpenter. Since my discharge from U.S. service have superintended building, have been Agent & collector and performed such duties as my physical condition would permit. I received the injury for which I claim and the disability from which I suffer in May 1864 near Spotsylvania Va in the line of duty and obedience to orders from a superior officer. I was with small detachment of men ordered to proceed too and guard a ford on one of the streams in that vicinity while endeavoring to reach the ford, ascending a hill by way of an old road marrow and gullied surrounded by timber and brush on either side, in the darkness of night my advance guard was fired on causing them to make a hasty retreat, in so doing one of them ran against and striking my left knee wrenched me from my horse to the ground where I was trampled upon by their horses in this manner I received the injury to left hip and stomach. We had no Surgeon with our command this transaction occurred about ten oclock P.M. I was on the following day conveyed to Port Royal, there attended by Surgeon (I did not ascertain his name or command to which he belonged on the following morning he ordered me conveyed to Washington DC and placed in Armory Square hospital after which I was transfered to U.S. line hospital Brattleboro, Vermont. After some days was furloughed home (where I celebrated the 4th of July 1864 on crutches with my family) my furlough was extended some days after which I returned to hospital and later to my reg’t I never had any acute disease since a school boy then had lung fever. Since I received injury to my hip and stomach I have suffered much from constipation and diarrhea with violent attacks of neuralgia in stomach and head. I have suffered much pain in my hip every hour since I received the injury from which I claim and by the weakened condition of my left leg I am often thrown down, and from the injury received and the disability incurred I am disabled from performing manual labor and have been since its incurrence. I have not been in the military or naval service since Aug 9th 1865 Jerome B. In the month of May 1864 in my return from leave on veteran furlough in company with Jerome B Hatch late Lieut Co C 1st Regt Vermont Cavalry Vols were informed our army in Va had moved we were ordered to Camp Stoneman from there under command of Col Pope of 8th New York Cavalry to the army in the field (in Va) on or about the 18th of May 1864. Lieut Hatch with detachment of men was by Col Pope ordered to guard a ford on one of the Mattapony rivers, while enroute there ascending a hill in a heavy growth of timber was fired on by parties then supposed to be the enemy (but afterwards found to be men from Gen Burnsides command) Lieut Hatch was run against by the advance guard retreating, thrown from his horse & trampled upon injuring him in the hip & stomach which occurred about ten oclock PM & very dark. We then fell back to the foot of the hill & remained until morning. Lieut Hatch complained he was so badly injured he could not proceed with the command requested me to report his condition to Col Pope which I did. Col Pope having received orders to guard Ambulance & baggage train to Port Royal with which Lieut Hatch went, when near the river I found quarters (in an old stable) where he was placed. I then went to the river & found a Surgeon who came & attended Lieut Hatch & on the following morning ordered him to the Hospital boat then in the river to which I assisted & there left him. I further declare I have no interest in this case & am not concerned in its prosecution. PM reports OK ______ T.S. May Witness H.V.
