The petition of Penuel Deming of Williamston (Williamstown) in the county of Orange & state of Vermont humbly sheweth. That on the 28th day of December last a certain trancient person by the name of David Brownson called at your petitioners house in Williamston, as he was upon a journey from Canada to Connecticut, with his feet frozen in such a manner as he was unable to proceed on his journey any farther. Moved with compassion towards such an object of charity, (who was destitute of money or any property whatsoever) your petitioner consented to keep him in his home and nurse him at a time when there was no other house in Sd Williamston. After Sd Brownson had been at your petitioner house twelve weeks & one day, he died of the injury he had received from the frost when he on his journey, tho faithfully nursed at the expense of your petitioner & having no property, not friends to indemnify your petitioner for the expence which he was at in feeding & nursing Sd deceased, your petitioner prays this honorable court to grant him his account against sd deceased as is annexed to this petition. Resting satisfied that this honorable court will oblige no individual to be at the whole expence of boarding a trancient person who is able to go from his home & and no property to indemnify the person who is at the expence of nursing & feeding such an object of charity more especially when he is in a town where there is but one house & no Overseers to take the charge of those who are considered as objects of charity. Your petitioner further sheweth that his circumstances in life are indigent & he has a large family to maintain of his own, & was at considerable espence purchasing provisions & other necessaries for the support of sd deceased which he was obliged to obtain upon credit, which is not yet paid; he therefore presents his account to this honorable court to allow, as your petitioner is in duty bound to pray.
