Nelson, ©1977: EARLY BUSINESSES pages 41 and 42: In 1836 William Blake, son of Moses Blake of the Squire Wright district, opened a hotel on his farm east of West Derby and ran it until Ames Dane built the two-story hotel at the (then) head of Main Street (corner now of Sias Avenue). Mr. Blake had several sons living in Derby and Newport. One, Zenas, was a man of considerable ability and well-known in business. He established a meat and vegetable market in 1854. By 1904 the Z.C. Blake and Sons market required four delivery horses and employed several men. It was about the largest business of its kind in Vermont. Zenas' home and barn at the corner of Maple Street and Indian Point Street later became the home and studio of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Richardson, the well-known photographers. George L. Sleeper of Newport married one of the daughters. The Blake Hotel ran from 1845 to 1860 and was a celebrated place for boys and girls to meet for 'terpsichorean' pleasures. Enlarged, it became the Magoon Block, and is still standing.
