Orcutt And Edward S. Alexander, ©1989, Page 40. Shirt of Mail Zadock Thompson also included in his "Vermont" the story of a shirt of mail found in Irasburgh in 1829, under the roots of a tree on the farm of Shubael Goodell. Its links were made of very coarse steel, riveted together, and the edges of the garment were made of brass wire. Its discovery caused some excitement; it was purchased by an army officer for donation to the museum of the National Institute of Washington; later it was said to be in Pearle's Museum in Philadelphia. 18 The question of where this artifact came from is a vexing problem, and its present whereabouts is yet another. 18 Thompson, Zadock, "History of Vermont, Natural, Civil, and Statistical in Three Parts", Burlington, [VT] 1842.
