Levi Parsons formed 1st Religious Group at the home of Samuel Chamberlain 1849 Our church was built 1863 Church raised to make Vestry 1911 Church incorporated 1st Congregational 1999 Organ & Carillon installed. In 1817, Samuel H. Hovey, a resident of Troy on a journey to New Hampshire, asked the Rev. Levi Parsons, a missionary working for the Vermont Missionary Society in Hardwick, to come to Troy. He agreed. Rev. Parsons had this to say about the reception the Gospel received upon beginning his work in Troy on January 18, 1818: "Every ear was open to receive instruction, and many expressed by their countenance and actions the keen distress of a wounded conscience." The exact date of his departure is not recorded. Rev. James Parker served from 1822-1826. THOUGHTS ON THE 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST AT NORTH TROY, VT, ©1993, pages 7 and 8. It is known that in 1822 Rev. Levi Parsons became the first U.S. missionary to Palestine. Of note also is the fact that he was the uncle of Levi Parsons Morton, who became vice president of the United State in 1888 when Benjamin Harrison was elected president.
