Private Gilbert Lucier came back as a soldier with a gimpy leg that, according to one of his descendents, cuased him to walk with a cane for the rest of his life. But the fact that a relative today recalls him saying it is headshakingly incredible, defying the odds that someone alive in 2011 would have personally known as a vet from the American Civil War of 1861-1865. The funeral drew a crowd because Gilbert Lucier, at 97...died at the Orleans County Memorial Hospital in Newport. According to a woman who visited Gilbert in the hospital, he kept his Union blue uniform hanging by his bed. ...Mr. Lucier attenend the seventy-fifth reunion that was held in Gettysburg [PA] in 1938. At the battle of Cold Harbor, which lasted from May 31 to June 4, Gilbert Lucier was one of 115 Vermonters who was wounded during that engagement... Back home from the war, Gilbert served the town as its road commissioner and represented Jay for one term in the Legislature. Most of what Duane Lucier, the grandnephew, remembers about Gilbert Lucier is based on what he calls hearsay... Additional Comments: Jay, Vermont, borders Quebec [PQ, QC], Canada.
