Hulett Jr. Author: Carl S. Hulett Jr. and Lynn Hulett Carl Shurz Hulett, the first child of Merritt Clark Hulett and Sarah Taylor Hulett, was born June 15, 1862, in Danby, VT. His mother, Sarah, was the daughter of Jared L. Hulett and Sarah M. Taylor. Merritt and Sarah had a second son, Casper Lobdell Hulett, b. 24 April 1865. In late 1875 or early 1876 Merritt and Sarah divorced and Sarah later married Elkeney Parrish of Danby. During most of the separation period and following the divorce, Carl and Casper lived with their paternal grandparents, Silas and Betsy Hulett. A diary notation in 1882 mentions Carl "drawing wood and working" for his grandfather. Another mention in 1883 noted that Carl attended school in Castleton, VT and briefly taught in a district school at Danby Four Corners. In 1884 Carl left his grandfather's farm and went to Troy, NY, where for a short time he worked as a driver on horse-drawn streetcars. He married Ann Killoran in Troy on 31 March 1885. Carl and Ann had three sons: Roy M., b.10 March 1891; Samuel T., b. May 1894; and Casper L., b. September 1896. Their eldest child, a daughter, died in infancy. When Carl developed health problems in 1888, he and Ann decided to move back to Pawlet. A year later, in 1889, he and a partner purchased a general store in Pawlet from Merritt, Carl's father. Carl operated the store for a few years, but about 1896, after his grandparents (Silas and Betsy Hulett) died and willed their farm to Merritt, Carl operated the farm for his father. Carl and Merritt installed one of the largest Grimm evaporators at that time in use in Vermont; a diary entry in 1897 noted that Carl made and sold more than 1,000 gallons of maple syrup. After Merritt and Sarah's divorce, Merritt married Amelia V. Horton of Pittsfield, OH, on 30 January 1877. On June 28, 1900 Merritt deeded Silas and Betsy's farm to the Methodist Society and he and Amelia moved to Wells, VT, and later to Granville, NY. During the time the farm was being disposed of, Carl and Ann were having marital problems. They returned to Troy and were divorced in September, 1902. The boys, Roy, Sam, and Casper, stayed in Pawlet with their grandmother Sarah. Following the divorce, Carl and his brother, Casper, who had remained in Troy, opened a retail and wholesale tobacco business together under the name of C.L. Hulett Co. The business flourished for more than 30 years and at its peak consisted of several retail stores in Troy and a large distributorship in New York and Vermont. While Carl was a patient at the old Samaritan Hospital on Eighth Street, a cousin who was a student nurse introduced him to a classmate, Carolyn Schaffer. Carolyn, b. 1881 (also known as Emma Caroline) was from Little Falls, NY; after graduating from nursing school in 1908 she and Carl married and began married life in a brownstone at 1810 Seventh Avenue. Carl's sons, who had been living in Pawlet with their grandmother and attending the Troy Conference Academy in Poultney, VT, joined their father and Carolyn in Troy. The two oldest boys, Roy and Sam, worked for the C.L. Hulett Co. and Casper was a student at the old Troy Academy on Seventh Avenue. On 16 November 1910, Carl and Carolyn had a son, born at the old Samaritan Hospital. The baby was initially named Harmon Hulett by an aunt; however the infant was renamed Carl Shurz Hulett, Jr. after the aunt died, although the official birth records were never corrected. The Hulett business did not survive the depression, mainly because of uncollectable accounts and eventually went into bankruptcy about 1931. Carl's health failed after the business closed and he suffered a series of heart attacks and died in 1932. Carolyn, a registered nurse, worked for the public schools and later became the public health supervisor for the Watervliet schools. She died in Chatham, NJ at her son Carl Jr.'s house on 13 December 1947. Additional Comments: Notes: Silas Hulett - b. 19 Nov 1807 VT; d. 9 Jul 1895, Pawlet VT.
