Roberts, @1998, Chapter 7, page 169: Affected by 1857 depressions, the Granville quarries did not thrive in the latter half of the decade. Of 4 quarrying firms in business there in 1855, only 520 remained in 1860, but two new firms had been founded, providing a total listing of 126 slate company employees in 1860, as compared to 125 in 1855. Taking the New York-Vermont slate belt as a whole, the business had gained a firm foothold by 1860...Their product had come to practically monopolize the Boston market...Vermont slate had been chosen for the roof of the new Chicago and Galena Railroad Depot.
