Adait of Rutland; final account of administrator filed and allowed and dividend ordered. October 2, 1896 Rutland Herald Married In Center Rutland, September 30, 1896 by Rev. D. W. Gates, William E. Morehouse and Nellie M. Shedd of Center Rutland. In Rutland, October 1 by Rev. Irving Towsley, Dr. F. L. Osgood of Saxton’s River and Miss Louise I. Dickerman of Rutland. In Pittsford, October 1 by Rev. C. H. Smith, Miss Jennie C. Giddings and J. Verton Clifford, both of Pittsford. October 2, 1896 Rutland Herald Local H. Eggleston was brought before Judge Wayne Bailey yesterday on the charge of intoxication. He pleaded not guilty, was found guilty, and fined $5 and costs; appealed and furnished bail. He disclosed on James McLaughlin and Peter Jepson. Both were found guilty of keeping and selling liquor and were fined $10 and costs in each case; appealed and furnished bail. West Rutland Mrs. Powers, sister of Owen McCarthy of this place, died at Middletown Springs yesterday. October 5, 1896 Rutland Herald County Court Considerable business was transacted at the County court Saturday. Bartley Sheridan who was arrested some time ago for stealing a ride on a Delaware and Hudson train, and them throwing a lump of coal at Conductor Lalor was found guilty on two counts of assault. [Note: this conductor was J. J. Lalor. Sheridan was sentenced to two years in the house of correction as noted in the Rutland Herald on October 14.] Walter Martin of Middlebury was brought up on twenty seven charges of keeping and selling intoxicants and maintaining a nuisance. The charges were divided as follows: selling 10, keeping 10, maintaining a nuisance 7. The cases were consolidated into 3. The respondent was found guilty and fined $100 and costs for selling liquor, $50 and costs for keeping liquor, and $140 and costs for maintaining a nuisance. The fines and costs will amount to about $1200. Three divorce cases were tried. Martin Baker was granted a divorce from his wife Mary Baker. Florence I. Peck was granted a divorce from her husband Samuel Peck. Lena G. Staples was granted a divorce from her husband George W. Staples. Personals M. E. Wheeler went to Amherst, Mass., Saturday. Miss Lillian Northrup of Syracuse, New York, who has been visiting Miss R. I. McCammon on Summer street returns home today. West Rutland Mrs. C. A. Parker has gone to Boston for a visit. George Rollins and family have moved into the Donnelly house on Elm street. Died In Rutland on October 4, James Fitzgerald, aged 75 years. Funeral at St. Peter’s church Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock. Interment at Calvary cemetery. October 6, 1896 Rutland Herald Fair Haven John A. Green and Miss Nora B. Ryan will be married at St. Bridget’s church at West Rutland on Wednesday, October 14, at 9 o’clock. A reception will be given the bride and groom at Green’s hall from 4 until 8 o’clock in the afternoon and evening. October 7, 1896 Rutland Herald Death of Little Anna Copps Anna, the nine-year-old daughter of Mrs. Michael D. Copps of 20 East Washington street, was so badly burned yesterday morning that she died at 7:40 o’clock last night. The little girl was left in charge of the house about 9 o’clock while her mother was out on another street. She was at work polishing the kitchen stove with a rag, which ignited. The dress caught fire, and it seemed evident that the little girl attempted to put the fire out and, becoming frightened, ran out into the street where neighbors succeeded in smothering the flames, but not before the clothing was burned off the child. The upper part of the body, the arms, and a portion of the face were terribly burned. Drs. J. D. Hanrahan, B. C. Senton, and W. W. Townsend were immediately called. Hypodermics of morphine were given and the burns dressed. The child did not suffer much during the day until 5 o’clock in the evening, when hypodermics were again administered to relieve the pai! n, but she was then past all aid and she died a little before 8 o’clock. The funeral will be announced later. West Rutland A daughter of Patrick Gavin died Monday afternoon. The funeral will be held at the house this afternoon at 3 o’clock. October 8, 1896 Rutland Herald Poultney Mrs. P. J. Delehanty has moved to Fort Edward, NY, where her husband is at work. Born At West Rutland, October 7, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Burke. October 12, 1896 Rutland Herald Personals W. E. McLaughlin of Albany, New York, formerly of Rutland, spent Sunday in the city. October 14, 1896 Rutland Herald Poultney Morris P. Williams has sold his interest in the slate quarry on the land owned by Hugh Williams in the southern part of the town to several persons in South Poultney who will work the quarry at once. The County Court State against Jacob Hale Gates; jury disagreed. State against Bartley Sheridan, verdict guilty; sentenced house of correction for two years. State against Frank Caswell, verdict not guilty. October 15, 1896 Rutland Herald Fair Haven The marriage of John A. Green, a member of the firm of Green Brothers, pharmacists, and Nora B. Ryan, daughter of Patrick Ryan of West Rutland, took place yesterday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Bridget’s church at West Rutland. Rev. Father Charles O’Reilly officiated. Matthew E. Hollern was best man and Miss Mamie Lyons bridesmaid. After the ceremony the wedding party went to the home of the bride’s parents, where a wedding breakfast was served. Offensend’s orchestra of Fair Haven, consisting of 13 pieces, furnished music. After breakfast there was dancing until 3 o’clock. A reception was held in Green’s hall here from 4 until 8 o’clock. Supper was served at 6 o’clock and was followed by dancing. A large crowd attended. People from Troy, Albany, and Whitehall, New York, Poultney and several other towns were present. The newly wedded couple left town about 10:30 o’clock last night for New! York and other places for a week. They have rented rooms in the Griffith Owens block over H. T. Jones and will make that their future home. Sigisman Lewrn, manager of Charles Sterns & Co.’s branch store of this place, fell from a stepladder Tuesday morning and Severely strained his arm. Ira R. Allen went to Troy yesterday morning. Castleton Mr. and Mrs. William Radigan of Rutland on Tuesday visited Mr. Radigan’s parents here. They are on their wedding trip. Among those who went to New York on the excursion Wednesday from here were Everett Potter, Mrs. Donald McClenan and children, accompanied by her sister, Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, Mrs. John Morarity, and Miss Mary Crane. West Rutland Patrick Coffey died Tuesday evening at the age of 96 years. The funeral will be held at St. Bridget’s church this morning at 8:30 o’clock. Middletown Springs There are no more cases of scarlet fever in town and the school will reopen next Monday. Mrs. Clara Carpenter is visiting friends at Chester. J. M. Jennings and Miss Mary Jennings of Rupert spent Sunday in town. John Orcutt of Chester is visiting his sister, Mrs. E. L. Cook. Mrs. Lois Gardner returned Tuesday from a week’s visit with friends at Rutland. M. A. McClure and John Bates of Rutland were in town hunting Tuesday. S. G. Adams and wife, Mrs. H. Beals and Miss Minnie Pringle wer to New York on an excursion Wednesday. J. W. Cook and Miss Libbie Cook and J. L. Parris and his sister have returned from a carriage drive of three weeks through the Adirondacks. They visited John Brown’s grave and Dansmore prison. Mrs. W. Knapp and children left Wednesday for their new home at Greenwich, Ct. October 17, 1896 Rutland Herald Castleton William Radigan, son of Patrick Radigan of this place, a salesman in F. C. Houghton’s dry good store in Rutland, and Miss Mary Ryan of Rutland were married Tuesday morning, October 13 at St. Peter’s church at Rutland by Rev. T. J. Gaffney. Pittsford Richard Mooney will move with his wife and children to Worcester, Mass., the first of the week. West Rutland The funeral of William Mullin will be held at the house on Barnes street this morning at 8:30 o’clock. October 23, 1896 Rutland Herald West Rutland Patrick Battles has gone to North Adams, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Morse leave today for their home in Missouri. Robert McCormick, who has been in Oregon and California for the past nine years, has returned home. October 24, 1896 Rutland Herald Married In Mendon October 21 by Rev. Mr. Martin, P. McCarty and Miss Zuphie Ranger, both of Mendon. October 28, 1896 Rutland Herald Wallingford Edward H. Toohey and Miss Maggie Mooney were married at St. Patrick’s Church at 8 o’clock Tuesday morning by Rev. Anthony Glynn. Miss Mary Mooney was bridesmaid, and Matthew Toohey acted as best man. Mr. and Mrs. Toohey will live in Wallingford. October 29, 1896 Rutland Herald West Rutland Mrs. Dennis Dwyer died Tuesday evening at the age of 62 years. She leaves a husband, son and daughter. The funeral will be held at St. Bridget’s church this morning at 9 o’clock. A large number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. John McDowell called upon them last evening. Mr. and Mrs. McDowell leave today for Marion, Ohio.
