Some of the young people planned for several stunts and races and dinner in the Taylor sugar place, north of the village, and in the afternoon for a scrub baseball game on the Prior diamond. About 10 o'clock the roadway by the grove was measured off and the people began to gather. Interest was first aroused by the broad jump for the men and boys, followed by a fast wheel-barrow race in two heats. A lean man's race and the 100-yard dash were run off in good form. A very strenuous potato race, with preliminaries and finals concluded the morning's exercises. Dinner was served in the grove at 1:30 o'clock. The crowd taxed the provision made, but no one went hungry. Dinned was followed by a song by Mr. Calkins and a women's nail-driving contest in three heats and a final heat. The tug-of-war, 12 on a side, was won by the married men. The women's tug-of-war was about to be won by the married women when interference on both sides gave the advantage to the girls. Several races not on the docket added to the fun of the occasion. Prizes of blue, red and white ribbon badges stamped "1st, 2nd or 3rd and July 4, '10" were given. The ball game was largely attended. The team was captained by Earl Gifford won over that captained by Will Allen, 21 to 7. A subscription provided for a good display of fireworks in the evening.
