A great mas of stone fell into the quarry, and seven men were instantly killed and a number of others seriuosly wouned. The victims were crushed so that some could not be recognized. The killed and injured were: Kied- William Lukas, Frank Sulig, Edward Powers, Aexander Blumquist, and three unrecognized men. Injured: James Dooley, John Dunn,Charles Anderson, Fred Marchand, Anto Ractio, John C. Anderson, Peter Granier, John Michian, MIchael Cupps. So soon as the accideny happened an electric danger signal was rung in at the company's offices and the mill and woek stopped at once. All the doctors in West Rutland and Rutland were called by telephone and repsonded quickly.Scored of men were also sent down to the quarry.Soon the news spread to the streets, and hundredsof men,women, and children hurried ot the quarry, and by five o'clock the vicinity was crowded. In the crowd were many relatives of the dead and injure dmen, and they were frantic wirh grief. The accident was near the extreme end o fthe quarry,far under the hill. The killed and some od the injured were buried under tons of rock, and the work of rescue is necessarily difficult. The cause of the caving in is no tpositivel yknown. E.B. Morse, treasurer of the company,said the cause was not certain,though the "scale" or part od the roof that fell was probably loosened by freezing.
