He was "a surgeon for the third VT Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Peninsular Campaign, and the Battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Dr. Janes was mustered in on June 24, 1861 and mustered out on January 4, 1866 as Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, having served onger than the greatest majority of Civil War volunteers, either north or south."
