Elbridge Fifield, 16, of Montpelier, VT went West in May 1837.  He used the Erie
Canal to Buffalo, NY; lake steamer to Detroit, MI; walked to Lake Michigan, sailed
across the lake to Milwaukee, WI and finished the trip overland to Rock County, WI.
By 1851 railroads replaced the Erie Canal and the walk across Michigan.
