BARRE, VT. CAPT. ELI HOLDEN DEAD. Dec. 13--Capt. Eli Holden, prominent in G. A. R. and Masonic circles, died this morning at his home in this city, aged 71 years. He was a native of South Barre and served with distinction in the civil war , where he won his title. While doing outpost duty on the Rappahannock river, he was captured and confined for 18 months in Libby prison, where he contracted rheumatism, which troubled him for the remainder of hi life. He was paroled March 15, 1865, and returned to Barre, buying the old homestead in South Barre. Three years ago he purchased a home in this city. Capt. Holden was one of the organizers of Crandall post, G. A. R., and it's first commander. He was one of the oldest members of Granite lodge of Masons and of the Knights of Honor. He leaves eight children and two brothers. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Additional Comments: Transcribed by, Joan H.
