JAMES MOWRY, son of John, born July 26, 1783; married in Pomfret, Conn., Sept. 27,
1804, LYDIA WEBSTER.

Guilford, Vt. 
  William Pitt, b. May 5, 1809, in Guilford, Vt. Lydia, b. June 23, 1811, in
Guilford, Vt.; died Oct. 14, 1844. 
Nelson, b. Nov. 19, 1813, in Guilford, Vt. Ann, b. Aug. 24, 1820, in Leyden, Mass. 
George, b. April 22, 1825, in Leyden, Mass.; died young. 

James Mowry was the youngest son of John Mowry, who died of apoplexy, when James was
sixteen years of age. Previous to the death of John, he had "paid off," as James
used to say, his older boys, and had intended that James should live at home, as he
was the youngest, and inherit the homestead. As no charges were made against such as
had been paid, and no will or deed was made, the law took the property and made an
equal division to all the legal heirs. James, therefore, went as apprentice to the
tanning, currying, and shoemaking trade. 

About the time he was of age, he was married to Lydia Webster, and took up his
residence in the southern part of Guilford, Vt. Here he bought a house, built a
tannery and shoemaker's shop, and worked at his trade for ten or fifteen years. At
this place most of his family were born, and while living here, he and his wife
embraced religion, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. His house from that
time became a home for all itinerant Methodist ministers who came into that circuit.
Though in indigent circumstances, he was an uprightman, respected by the community
in which he lived, a good husband, an excellent father, and a consist ent Christian.
From about 1818 he was a farmer, residing first in Leyden, Mass., and afterwards in
Guilford, Vt. He was of a cheerful disposition, always happy when surrounded by his
friends, especially those of his own family. 

He died at the home of his son-in-law, Horace W. Linde, and was interred in the
public ground, in Guilford, Vt., where a stone is erected to his memory.
