Ira Adams' house In 1919 a file was made and is in the D.A.R. room of the Brattleboro Memorial Library. It omitted the Sawtell marker- that is the only difference between the 1919 file and one compiled in 1959. There was some controversy in the thirties about the location of the Sawtell marker. The tragedy, which caused the death of the whole Sawtell family except one, took place on Timson Hill in Williamsville. Some believed that the remains were buried on Newfane Hill and remained there. Others maintained that the remains were brought to this cemetery (Old Hogback) and placed in one grave. The Sawtell Marker here is very weathered- 1. The following was copied from it many years ago --- LEVI SAWTELLE, the only survivor, died in 1812 Reader, observe this grave contains Seven near relative remains. Two parents, an illfated pair- Fairest this hapless offspring were Names of the unhappy couple HENRY AND JERUSHA SAWTELL Henry, one son's the same, Jerusha, bore the mother's name.
