In 1873, seventeen ell gravestones were left standing in the yard, and at the present time only nine remain. The rest have been In-oken down and trampled in pieces by cattle. The grave of Capt. John Kathan, the first settler in Dummerston. is, therefore, left unmarked. Quite a number of the first settlers must have been buried in that yard ; for in making the excavation for a cellar on its site a few years ago, seven bodies or skeletons w^ere found, and the owner of the land states that his horses sometimes step into soft places where graves were dug. Thus ends the record of the births, marriao^es and deaths in the first three .
