ALLEN ------------------------------ Wife of Former Widely-Known Florist Sustained Shock Last Week--Funeral Friday at 2:30 p.m. Mrs. Emma Maria (Hodge) Allen, 74, wife of Charles E. Allen, formerly for many years a widely know florist, died at 11:30 o'clock today in her home at 204 Canal street. She had not been well since about four years ago this spring, when she had a severe illness, but was able to be about her home until seven weeks ago yesterday. She was then confined to her bed three or four weeks, but recovered sufficiently so that she was able to be down stairs up to a week ago, when she sustained a shock whick resulted in her death. She was a native of Groton, Mass., and was born Sept. 7, 1849, one of the three children of Roswell B. Hodge and Esther Maria (Cragin) Hodge. When she was young her mother died, and she came to live in the home of her aunt, the last Mrs. E. B. Campbell. After leaving school she taught in the school in Guilford near Christ Episcopal church. She married Charles Edwin Allen of Brattleboro, Feb. 16, 1875, and their home was at 194 Canal street until a few years ago, when Mr. Allen sold his florist business to Carroll N. Bond. Mr. Bond's father, George N. Bond buying the Allen residence. Mrs. Allen was a great lover of her home and gave to it the best that was in her and as a neightbor and friend she won a very large place for herself. She ever was thoughtful of others and this thoghtfulness was manifest in the cheer carried into the homes of many by the blossoms which she gathered from her own old-fashioned garden of rare and choice specimens of flowers, of which she was especially fond. She was a member of no organization, bur formerly was a member of the visiting committee at the Home for the Aged. Besides her husband she leaves a daughter and three sons. They are: Miss Florence C. Allen, teacher of Latin in the high school in Greenfield, Mass.;Carroll E. Allen, proprietor of the Allen House in West Lebanon, N.H.; Ralph G. Allen, who lives at home and Louis I. Allen, proprietor of Allen's transfer and auto livery business. The funeral will be held at the house Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Reb. Herbert P. Woodin, D.D. pastor of the Centre Congregational church officiating. *** The funeral of Mrs. C.E. Allen, who died Wednesday noon, was held in the home at 204 CAnal street at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Rev. Dr. Herbert P. Woodin, pastor of the Centre Congregational church, officiating. Frederic C. Adams sang Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, and Sometime We'll Understand. The burial took place in Morningside cemetery. The bearers were Ralph G. Allen, Carroll E. Allen, Louis E. Allen and Clarence W. Reed. Carroll E. Allen and Miss Elizabeth Allen of White River Junction and Mrs. A. E.
