GREENE DIED IN HOME Well-Known Physician and Surgeon Succumbs to Tuberculosis GAVE UP PRACTICE FOUR MONTHS AGO Was Graduate of University of Vermont Medical College and Registered Pharmacist--Funeral Tomorrow in Centre Church Dr. Harry P. Green, 40, one of the best known physicians and surgeons in Windham county, died of tuberculosis at 5 o'clock yesterday morning in his home at 83 Green street. He had been in failing health since the latter part of 1918, when he was stricken with influenza, which developed into the illness which was the cause of his death. About four months ago he gave up his practice and went to the sanitarium at Pittsford, where he remained three months. He was brought back to him home here about three weeks ago. Harry Paul Greene was born in Brattleboro, June 10, 1883, one of the two sons of Louis Darwin Greene and Annie (Spencer) Greene. He attended the Brattleboro schools, graduating from the high school in June, 1903. He then attended Cornell university, spending a year at the Cornell medical branch at New York city and another year at the medical school in Ithaca. The following two years he spent at the University of Vermont, graduating as a physician and surgeon in June, 1907. While in Burlington he became a registered pharmacist and studied surgery with Dr. John B. Wheeler of that city. During his boyhood days he busied himself in the drug store owned by his grandfather, the late George E. Greene, who was in the druggist business for nearly 50 years at the location now occupied by E.J. Fenton's men's store. The business is now carried on in Hooker block under the name Wilfred R. Root & Son. Dr. Greene's father, the late Louis D. Greene, was associated with George E. Greene for a long time when the store was in its former location. Following his graduation from the University of Vermont, Dr. Greene began to practice in Brattleboro and vicinity taking an office at 4 Elliot street which he maintained up to a few months ago. Shortly after taking up the practice of medicine he bacame chief physician and surgeon for the Holbrook, Cabot & Rollins corporation, which built the Boston & Maine railroad from East Northfield to Brattleboro on the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut river and blasted out the old Vernon street in connection therewith. He was physician in charge of between 1,500 and 2,000 men, which provided the opportunity for a wide practice. He was surgeon for the Central Vermont and Boston & Maine railroads about eight years. Dr. Greene was for a time in the early part of his professional career an interne at Christ hospital, Jersey city, and at the lying-in hospital in New York city. During his practice in Brattleboro he attended several clinics in Ny York. Shortley after his graduation he was admitted to practice in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. In 1918, while the World war was at its height, Dr. Greene enlisted in the medical corps of the United States army and receives his commission as captain, but he was unable to take active part in the service because of an attack of influenza just as he received his orders to report for duty at camp. He was amember of the Windham County Medical society, the Vermont State Medical society and the American Medical association, also of the Brattleboro Country club and the Vermont Wheel club. While at the University of Vermont he was captain of the university tennis team. He was also a member of Phi Alpha Sigma fraternity and of the Centre Congregational parish. Beside his mother, he leaves one brother P.L. Greene of Worcester, Mass., and two aunts Mrs. Fred Tyler of Goffstown, N.H., and Mrs. George Emery of Rutland. Funeral services will be held in the Centre Congregational church tomorrow at 2 o'clock. Rev. Dr. H.P. Woodin officiating.
