1924- 50th anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Barna Phelps Date: 98-04-11 21:23:12 EDT From: tess@sover.net (Terry Perham) from the Brattleboro Reformer Brattleboro, Windham County, Vt. 1924 GIFTS INCLUDED $50 IN GOLD ------ Mr. and Mrs. Barna Phelps of West Brattleboro Observed Golden Wedding Anniversary--Family Dinner Party Mr. and Mrs. Barna Nathan Phelps celebrated their golden anniversary yesterday in their home in West Brattleboro, when their children and relatives gathered at their home for a dinner party at 6 o'clock and social time in the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Phelps were presented $50 in gold from relatives and neighbors, also several bouquets of cut flowers and other gifts. The decorations in the dining room were of yellow, the dining table being especially attractive. For the centerpiece was a large gold cake, with yellow icing, made in the form of a basket. The handle of the basket was represented by two wedding rings and inside the basket were placed the gold pieces. There were 23 who sat down to dinner. In the evening music, instrumental and vocal, was rendered and a social time was enjoyed. Those attending from out of town were, Mr. and Mrs. Harold D. Blodgett of East Charlemont, Mass., Miss Pauline Fisher of Fair Haven (Vt), Mr. and Mrs. Claude Carr, Glenn Carr and Leon Smith all of Greenfield. Mr. and Mrs. Phelps were married June 10, in Wilmington by Rev. Nathan Wilder, pastor of the Methodist church of that place. Eight children were born to them, six of whom are living. They are: Gratia A. wife of F.P. Carr of Brattleboro, Jennie Elizabeth Phelps of West Brattleboro, Georgianna, wife of John Hadgraft of La Crosse, Wis., Bessie Lenora Fisher of Brattleboro, Henrietta, wife of Leon Smith of Brattleboro and Ethel Josephine, wife of Harold Blodgett of East Charlemont, Ma.. There are also 12 grandchildren. Mrs. Phelps, whose maiden name was Nancy A Bratton, was born in Stamford (Vt) Dec. 6, 1849. She is a member of the Methodist church in Stamford, having joined that church when a yong woman. Mr. Phelps was born in Halifax Dec. 23, 1837, where he lived until he enlisted in the Civil war with Company E, 11th Vermont regiment. He say service for three years and was in the battles of Petersburg, Cold Harbor and Spottsylvania, but was not wounded. During the early part of Mr. and Mrs. Phelp's married life they lived in several states, but for the past thirty years they have been residents of West Brattleboro. He worked several years at farming and at the trade of a carpenter until his health gave out.
