Richardson Co., meat market and formerly engaged in the livery business, died at 4.15 o'clock this morning in his home at 13 Canal street, death resulting from brights disease and complications. He was in ailing health some time and had been confined to his bed much of the time since Sept. 15, 1923. He was the only child of John H. Stockwell and Mary Ann (Sherman) Stockwell of South Newfane and was born March 6, 1858. His mother died when he was 11 months old and he lived with relatives in Dover until he was nine years old and attended school there. He learned the miller's trade with H.J. Richmond in Guilford and followed that trade many years. He then became general manager of the late John L. Ray's livery stable and after a few years established a stable of his own off Elliot street to the north. Several years later he was burned out and when the stable was rebuilt it was made larger and Mr. Stockwell took Edward Putnam of Chicago into business with him. Afthe the death of Mr. Putnam, who lived but a short time, Mr. Stockwell sold the business to Howard & Yearly and remained to work for them a few months. For two years he was assistant veterinarian of the Animal hospital on Newbury street in Boston. Returning to Brattleboro early in 1908 he was employed for a time at Naulahka by Frederick Holbrook and on Oct. 10, 1910, he entered the employ of W.F. Richardson Co. where he worked as long as his health permitted. Mr. Stockwell was a member of Wantastiquet lodge of Odd Fellows, Oasis Encampment and Canton Palesinte: was a past sachem of Quinekticut tribe of Red Men, of which he was a charter member, and was a charter menber of the Vermont Wheel club. On Nov. 4, 1879, he married Miss Carrie M. Pettee of Brattleboro, a native of Newfane, and their entire married life was spent in Brattleboro except the two years they were in Boston. She survives, also a half sister, Mrs. Don Miller of Brattleboro, and several cousins. "Jack" Stockwell as he was familiarly known by a wide circle of acquaintances possessed a genial disposition which not only won him many friends, but gave him courage to bear with remarkable patience his long period of suffering. The funeral will be held at the home at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Rev. Edwin P. Wood of All Souls church officiating and the burial will take place in Morningside cemetery. ************************************************************************ (c)1998, Terry Perham Courtesy of Terry Perham Hinsdale, NH tess@sover.net ************************************************* * * * * NOTICE: Printing the files within by non-commercial individuals and libraries is encouraged, as long as all notices and submitter information is included.
