COTTON MATHER Death Follows Few Days' Illness with Double Pneumonia Mrs. Cotton Mather, 78, died yesterday shortly after noon in her home in this village after an illness of only a few days, with double pneumonia. She was born in Westminster, Oct. 22, 1839, and was one of eight children of Whitney and Fanny (Smith) Whitaker and was the last survivor of her father's family. Her maiden was Seraph P. Whitaker. Her mother's father, Major Ephriam Smith, was a Revolutionary soldier who assisted in guarding Major John Andre after the latter was captured. Mrs. Mather lived in Newfane when she was a child, and the family moved from there to Wilmington. When she was 17 years old she went to Marlboro to live and it was there that she met Mr. Mather. They were married in West Brattleboro June 1, 1858, by Rev. Joseph Chandler. Mr. Mather, who was a farmer and stone mason, died in December, 1912. Four years before his death, in 1908 Mr. anmd Mrs. Mather celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mather leaves three daughters and one son. They are Miss Seraph Annette Mather, and Helen A. wife of W.E. Chase, both of West Brattleboro, Mrs. Harriet F. Newcomb of Brattleboro and George E. Mather of East Orange, N.J. A son, Myron I. Mather, died last July. Several grandchildren also survive. She had been a member of the First Congregational church many years and was interested in all its activities. The funeral will be held in the First Congregational church tomorrow at 3 o'clock, Rev. H.H. Shaw of Marlboro officiating.
