Stone's Mill and Was Working at Turning Lathe -- Walks About 15 Feet and Expires in Few Seconds Funeral services will be held this afternoon in the church in Jacksonville for Oscar Gates, about 30 years old, who was almost instantly killed in Frank H. Stones lumber mill in Harrisville, in the town of Halifax, late Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Gates met his death in a peculiar manner. He was at work at a turning lathe, run by a belt from an overhead shafting. The ends of the belt were fastened together with small steel hooks such as usually are used for that purpose. The belt suddenly broke, the hooks pulling out, and the belt was wound up in the machinery. A piece of one of the broken steel hooks was hurled against Mr. Gates, striking him between the clavicle, or collar bone, and his left ribs and penetrated the body, going through one lung and nearly through his heart, making only a tiny hole in the flesh but opening the large artery. The wounded man walked about 15 feet and then fell, expiring within 20 seconds. Dr. Walsh of Readsboro was summoned. Mr. Gates was born in Jacksonville. His mother is not living, but his father, Clinton Gates, carries on a store in Green River. He married Miss Alice Sprague of Jacksonville, who survives. He also leaves several brothers and sisters. For two years Mr. and Mrs. Gates were employed by John E. Gale in Guilford, leaving there last March. ^^^^^ JACKSONVILLE Funeral of Oscar Gates The funeral of Oscar Gates, who was killed in Stone's mill in Harrisville, Nov. 18, was held in the Universalist church in Jacksonville Friday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. A large number of friends and relatives of the young man attended the services, showing the esteem in which he was held by the community.
