1925 obit--Mary H. Amato-Brattleboro, Windham Co. VT Date: 7/30/98 1:30:35 PM Eastern Daylight Time from the Brattleboro Reformer Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont 1925 DEATH COMES TO MARY H. AMATO Made Record of Excellent Scholarship in High School Class of 1925 and Planned to Study Law After an illness of several months with tuberculosis, Mary Helen Amato, 19 died at 5.20 yesterday afternoon at her home on Mountain View avenue. As early as last May her health began to fail but it was not until August that alarming symptoms developed. In September she spent some time at the state sanitariun in Pittsford, but the disease had progressed too far to allow effective treatment. Since her return she had grown steadily weaker. Oldest daughter of Angelo and Rosa Maria Amato, Mary was born in Winhall, Nov. 6 1906, but had spent practically all her life in Brattleboro. She was graduated from the hgh school in June 1925, and had planned to enter Middlebury college this fall. Her school record was one not only of excellent scholarship but of keen interest in every activity connected with its work. In her senior year she was president of the student counci, assistant editor of the Dial, president of the French club and actively connected with the debating and dramatic clubs. She took one of the leading parts in She Stoops to Conquer, given in 1924, and was one of the class prophets at commencement last June. Courage, ambition and appreciation for her opportunities were characteristics of Mary Amato's short life that endeared her to her schoolmates and won respect and admiration from a much wider circle. Determined on the best that education could give in the hope that she might eventually take up the study of law, she was never forgetful of what others did to give her such an opportunity. Obstacles that might have looked large to others were to her bur a challenge, and her determination to surmount them was a trait that endured to the last stages of her illness. Besides her parents she leaves one brother, Joseph, and two sisters, Doris and Milly. Funeral services will take place in St. Michael's Roman Catholic church, of which she was a communicant, tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock, with burial in St. Michael's cemetery. ************************************************************************ (c)1998, Terry Perham Courtesy of Terry Perham Hinsdale, NH tess@sover.net ************************************************* * * * * NOTICE: Printing the files within by non-commercial individuals and libraries is encouraged, as long as all notices and submitter information is included.
