1925 obit-Charles H. Bemis Date: 8/10/98 8:34:46 AM Eastern Daylight Time from the Brattleboro Reformer Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont 1925 EAST DOVER CHARLES H. BEMIS DIES Charles H. Bemis, 73, a much respected citizen of this village, died at 7 o'clock this morning after a few days illness with pneumonia. Mr. Bemis was born in Wardsboro, July 27, 1852, the oldest of the eight children of Henry Clark and Maria (Hale) Bemis. He attended the public schools of this town and spent his early life here with the exception of a short time in Worcester, Mass. On March 19, 1870, he married Charlotta Ella Harrington of Barre, Mass. Mr. Bemis was engaged in farming practally all his life. Thirty -seven years ago he bought the Whitney Jones farm about one and one-fourth miles from this village, on the Wardsboro road, where he had since lived. Mr. Bemis was keenly interested in town affairs and had served as selectman, justice of the peace, auditor and lister. He was a member of the East Dover Methodist church. He leaves his wife and three daughter, Bertha, wife of Will Bemis; Elra, wife of Erwin Smith; and Eleanor, wife of Wayne Yeaw, all of Brattleboro. The oldest daughter, Nellie Frances, died in 1882 at the age of one year. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Luther Eames of Wardsboro and Mrs. William Smith of Amherst, Mass. Mr. Bemis was very devoted to his home and family. They have the sympathy of the community in their loss. The funeral will be held in the home Sunday at 10 o'clock. Rev. R. L. Emery, pastor of the Baptist church of East Dover, will officiate.
