He then worked for L.P. Mowry in the meat business at Williamstown, Mass., for six years and a half, when he enlisted as a private in the 11th regiment, United States infantry regulars, and soon rose to the rank of orderly sergeant.  He was orderly sergeant three years.  After that he was clerk for the sutler one year.  In 1864 he married Ellen D. Mowry, daughter of his former employer at Williamstown, Mass.  In 1866 they moved to Whitingham and 17 years ago moved to this town.  He was one of the charter members of Charles P. Clark Post, G.A.R., of which organization he was an active member.  He was always active in politics and town business, a man of pronounced opinions, a man who had the courage to express and defend his convictions.  He was one whose counsels will be greatly missed.  He was an active member of the Methodist church and society. He leaves a widow and two children, Mattie A., wife of Orval Crosier of Rutland, Vt., and Avery K., of this town; also three brothers, Edwin of Oregon, William of South Dakota, Daniel [sic. David] of Pittsfield, Mass., and one sister, Adelaide of Rutland."  Additional Comments: My notes: The definition of SUTLER: They were civilian merchants who drove wagons of supplies to sell to the soldiers.  Milton POWERS was raised by his grandfather, David DALY 1767-1842, and his Aunt Martha DALY, 1795-1867. Milton was my maternal 2 great grandfather. He lived in Massaschusetts [MA] and Vermont while his brothers lived in OR, SD, etc. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/vt/windham/obits/p/powers197gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/vtfiles/ File size: 2.6 Kb
