John R. Schroeder, August 15, 1998, schroeder@maricopa.edu ----------------------------------------------------- Abbott Cemetery Transcriptions Gaysville, (Stockbridge Township), Windsor County, Vermont John R. Schroeder May 6, 7, & 8, 1998 Not to be used commercially without permission of the author This document including photos is available in HTML format at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/8755/abbott_cem.htm Although most rows aren't straight, and only the last one lines up with any of the fences, (and the plot only has one square corner!), I've tried to keep the transcription in a logical sequence, starting at the east- northeast corner of the plot (to the right as you enter the gate), and using the fence paralleling the river road as the base line. Since all numbering is done from the road baseline, the rows are numbered RIGHT to LEFT as you face the majority of the stone inscriptions. In addition to the transcription, each entry includes the stone number and the height and width of the stone (measured from the ground - many of the stones have settled and some text is below ground level.) Any special notes follow the individual entry. Any data that is unclear is noted by question marks with comments in square brackets. [ ]. Abbreviations and punctuation are as found on the stones, with the exception of "AE" which is used in place of "Æ" since many fonts don't support that character. The first stone is located by itself 8' from the corner. It is also an exception in that the text is on the eastern side of the stone, while the majority of stones have the only or primary text on the western side of the stones. Miscellanous Notes: 1) A broken stone (ground level), 5" wide, is 3 feet behind Deliat Coburn on a direct line with Lewis Hatch. 2) A broken/buried stone (ground level), 4 feet behind Franklin A. Cunningham with the initials F.A.C. on the back side near the top. 3) A broken/buried stone (ground level) is located 3.5 feet in front of Seraph Ellis. *** Alphabetic Index with stone and row number *** ??, Abigail [Abbott]; 98/9 ??, Emily J.
