E-Mail contact: JohnHarvey@nventure.com History and Location of Bemis Cemetery ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bemis Cemetery, established 1888, originally called "Rogers Cemetery", is located about five miles southeast of Ralston, Adams Co., Washington, SE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Sec 32, Twp 17N, R 36E Willamette Meridian. Latitude 46° 55" 28' N x Longitude 118° 18" 00' W. Driving directions: Proceed south from Ritzville or north from Washtucna on WA State Route 261. At Mile 48 proceed east on Providence Road 1.5 miles, then north 0.8 mile. The cemetery is located in the area known as Rattlesanke Flat. While we did not see any snakes we are told there may be some in the area. There are many badger holes -- be cautious where you step. S. Montgomery, died on Rattlesnake Flat on last Saturday [equates to 17 Dec 1898] and was buried at Bemis cemetery Sunday. The cause of death was consumption." Source: The Washington State Journal and Ritzville Times, Thursday, November 2, 1911, issue "Mrs. Gull The remains of Mrs. Gull of spokane, formerly a resident of the Flat, were laid to rest in the Bemis cemetery near Ralston last week. Her husband was buried there several years ago. (A second notice headlined Washtucna provides different information) "Mrs. R. J. Gull, who was formerly a resident of Adams county, was buried Tuesday [equates to 31 Oct 1911] in the Rogers cemetery on Rattlesnake Flat. At the time of her death, Mrs. Gull resided with her daughter, Mrs. C. A. Osmer, at Spokane. While in Adams county, her husband died and was buried here and she expressed a desire to be buried beside him. To comply with her wishes her children brought the remains here for their last resting place." Note: There is a plot at Bemis Cemetery owned by R. GULL and a monument for a John GULL.
