H. Lavender Dead Jesse H. Lavender, 59, former resident of Lincoln county, when he owned a place on Crab creek and well known in Ritzville, died in Los Angeles on July 20. He is survived by his widow, Etta; one son, Lavern; three brothers and one sister. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 31, 1930, issue Mrs. C. E. Janes A telephone message received by the Journal-Times Wednesday evening from Mrs. Walter Staser stated that her sister, Mrs. C. E. Janes had passed away that morning at Tacoma following a mastoid operation. Complications developed rapidly following the operation and Mrs. Janes passed away within a short time. Mrs. Janes had made numerous visits to Ritzville, was well known to many people here, and had scores of friends, who were attracted by her charming personality. Mrs. Janes' last visit was but a few weeks ago, when she accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Staser on their trip home. The funeral is to be held Friday afternoon at 3 in Tacoma. Carl Meyer Carl, age 30, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer, died suddenly at the home of his parents here Wednesday afternoon about 4 o'clock, and the funeral will be held Sunday morning at 10:30 from the Philadelphia Congregational church, with interment in the local cemetery. The young man was a victim of epilepsy and passed away during one of the attacks. Carl was born here on Jan. 6, 1900, and raised in this community. He leaves, in addition to his parents, two sisters, Mrs. E. L. Starring and Miss Sophronia Meyer, and three brothers, Mike of Ritzville, Ben of Helena, and George of Augusta, Mont. Arthus Giese Arthur Giese, a well-known Ritzville boy, died at Portland July 19 of peritonitis, following an operation for ulcers of the stomach. The body was laid to rest in the Rose City cemetery. Arthur was 24 years of age and leaves three brothers and one sister. Infant Son Dies The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John V. Kanzler died Saturday night and the funeral and burial was held the following day. The baby was born on the 22nd. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 7, 1930, issue Jim Payne Passes WASHTUCNA - Another of Washtucna's familiar characters has gone to his lasting reward in the death of James Payne, more commonly known as Jim in this locality, where he made his home for the past quarter century. He passed away at the home of his brother, Smith Payne in Kelso, July 31. Mr. Payne has been ailing for the past year but it was not until about two weeks ago that he became alarmingly ill. At that time his brother came up from Kelso and took him to his home there. Several years ago Jim purchased what is known as the J. M. Booth place on the edge of town where he has made his home. He was down town a great deal where he had many friends who will miss his kindly presence. He was sixty-nine years old at the time of his death and came here from Kansas. He is survived by three brothers, William of Stanfield, Ore.; Robert of Mt. Valley, Kan.; and Smith of Kelso, Washington; a sister, Mrs. D. Thompson of Mt. Valley, Kansas. Funeral services were held from the E. G. Ditlevsen Funeral home, Kelso, Friday, with interment in the Longview Memorial Park, Rev. G. D. Rarey, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. A. Rein to the national Lutheran convention at Toledo was saddened by the sudden demise of Mrs. Rein's father at St. Paul. Death occurred as the result of fumigating gas asphyxiation. Mrs. Rein had not seen her father for eight years, but was fortunate enough to have a visit with him before his tragic death. Mrs. A. M. Reeder HATTON - Mrs. Maude Reeves received a letter from Mrs. Ara Cooper in Dallas, Texas, announcing that her mother, Mrs. A. M. Reeder had died after a 10 days illness, having had a stroke and remaining unconscious till just before she died. Mrs. Reeder and family were pioneers of Hatton and she was 80 years old last June. She had lived in Dallas the last few years with her daughter. She was a good Christian woman, beloved by all who knew her, bearing her many sorrows with that calm, only a true Christian can. Mrs. Reeder lived to see her husband, one young daughter in the east and 5 sons, Al, George, Fred, Len and Guy laid away. Two of her children, Mrs. Ara Cooper and a son Lloyd Reeder remain of the large family to mourn her passing. A host of friends will grieve to learn of her death. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 4, 1930, issue Henry Becker Henry Becker, Jr., aged 49 years, 5 months and 19 days, passed away at his residence eighteen miles west of Ritzville Tuesday evening following a long illness. Mr. Becker, who had been a successful farmer in the western part of the county for nearly thirty years, was the son of Henry Becker, Sr., pioneer shoemaker of Ritzville. Surviving the deceased are his widow, one son, William Becker, and four daughters, Mrs. John Lesser, Mrs. John Becker, and Anna and Lucille. A son, Harry, preceeded his father in death three years ago. A sister, Mrs. Pauline Melcher, also survives, as well as three brothers, John, Fred and Alex Becker. Funeral services will be held from the Brockmann church two miles west of the Hofel school house, at 1:30 Friday afternoon, the Rev. Henry Brockmann officiating. Interment will be made in the family plot at the Ritzville cemetery at 2:30. There will be a short service at the cemetery for the Ritzville friends who are unable to attend the church services. Mrs. Harry Swinehart Mrs. Harry Swinehart, 46, passed away at the family home seven miles south of Lind at 9:30 Wednesday evening, the cause of death being cancer. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. form the Methodist church in Lind, the Rev. Seethaff officiating. Burial will be in the Lind cemetery. Bertha Davis Swinehart was born in Wyoming April 9, 1884, the daughter of Lavina Morgan Davis and Chas. Davis. Surviving are the husband, and five children - four daughters and one son. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 11, 1930, issue Cousin Dies In Wreck Upon reading the Spokesman-Review Tuesday morning Wm. Lafrenz learned of the death of his cousin, Giles Cheatham, who was burned to death in an automobile accident enroute to Spokane from Portland. Cheatham was on his way to his father's funeral when the tragedy occurred. The funeral was held in Spokane today. Pioneer of Hooper District Passes WASHTUCNA - The many friends in this locality of Mrs. William Thomas of Hooper were grieved to learn of her death on Sunday morning, August 31, at her home in Hooper. She was 81 years of age and has been a resident of that community for over 40 years although for the past few years she with her husband has spent the winters in California. Mrs. Thomas has been suffering for a number of years from angina pectoris. A short time ago she was very ill and her children were all called home, but she rallied to such an extent that they left for their own homes. She passed away at 6:45 Sunday morning. The funeral was held on Tuesday at the family home. Many friends and loved ones attended to pay last respects to a pioneer mother. Rev. D. A. Russell of Spokane, former pastor of Washtucna and Hooper, officiated. Mrs. Thomas leaves to mourn her passing her husband, four sons, James of Oregon; Melvin, Newport, Wash.; Frank, Dishman, Wash.; and one daughter, Mrs. Archie McGregor of Glendale, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Belle Bonney, Riparia. The body was taken to a vault at Colfax until later in the fall when the McGregor family and Mr. Thomas will return to Glendale, Calif., where it will be removed to its final resting place in the mausoleum there. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 18, 1930, issue Sister of Local Woman Killed By Drunken Driver Mrs. John Gross of Peshastin, sister of Mrs. Ed Tesch of this city, was fatally injured at 9:30 Saturday evening when struck by a drunken driver. The tragedy occurred on the highway near the Gross home, five miles from Peshastin. Mrs. Gross was standing at the roadside holding a flashlight while her husband repaired a flat tire, when she was struck by the drunk's car traveling at a high rate of speed. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 25, 1930, issue Mrs. Charles Pahlow Mrs. Charles Pahlow, 73, well known Ritzville matron of many years' residence in this community passed away at the family home at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday following a long illness. Margaret Frances Clark was born in Illinois, July 28, 1857, the daughter of James and Mary Clark. Surviving are her husband, Charles A. Pahlow of Ritzville; three daughters, Mrs. A. J. Towers and Mrs. L. W. Evans, Ritzville, and Mrs. J. P. Rilley, Woodland, Illinois. A son, George Knox, resides at Jackson, Minnesota, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Alexander, lives in Chicago. A granddaughter, Mrs. Fred Frick, resides near Ritzville. Funeral arrangements have not yet been arranged, pending the arrival of relatives from the east.
