Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. The Rev. Jacob Morach, retired pastor of the Zion Congregational church, Rev. L. Gaiser, former pastor of the German Methodist church, and the Rev. R. D. Decker of the Methodist church officiated. After a long illness which confined him to his home, Mr. Thiel died last Saturday at 8:45 a.m. He had been a resident of Adams county since 1883. Mr. Thiel was born March 23, 1856, in Kolb, Russia. At the age of 20, he came to the United States and settled in Nebraska, where in 1880 he was married to Anna Elizabeth Bauer who died in 1894. In 1882, with the other Thiels, Rosenoffs and Bauers he came to Walla Walla where he remained until the spring of 1883, when he settled on a homestead four miles west of Ritzville. In 1895, he married Ida Banditt Stuelke of Sprague, who died in 1934. Mr. Thiel moved to Ritzville and retired in 1902, having lived here since. He is survived by three daughters, Miss Ruth Thiel, Mrs. Will Schafer and Mrs. A.C. German, all of Ritzville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Active pallbearers were all grandsons, Joel, Harold, Gilbert and Robert German, Everett Schafer and Lawrence Thiel. The following served as honorary pallbearers: George Kanzler, John Kanzler, Fred Rosenoff, Henry Rosenoff, Jacob Schoessler Sr., and Jacob Kiehn. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 8, 1936, issue Brother Dies LIND - Mrs. R. A. Banks received a telegram Saturday afternoon that her brother, C. W. Aherne, 47, Victoria, B.C. died. C. W. Aherne served his country when a youth, in the World War in South Africa in 1900. He enlised in the British army and served a number of years in India. Then he came to Canada and when the World war broke out he joined the first Canadians at Montreal. He went over seas to France where he served until he was gassed. He visited in Lind several years ago after which he made his home in Victoria. Ida Gfeller LIND - Word was received here of the death of Mrs. Ida Gfeller of Spokane, Friday. She is survived by her husband, Gottfrieid at the home, two sons, Otto of Lind, Fred of Ralston; one brother, Paul Thiener of Maine; three sisters Mrs. Agnes Wiseman of Spokane, Mrs. Marie Brenner of Danville, Wash.; Mrs. Minnie Michel of Valleyford; six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 15, 1936 issue Mrs. Violet Hoppel Passes In Spokane Mrs. Violet Hoppel, resident of Ritzville in the early 1900s, died last Saturday in Spokane and her funeral was held Wednesday in Walla Walla. Mrs. Hoppel was a niece of William A. Pearce. Mr. and Mrs. Pearce drove to Walla Walla Wednesday to attend the funeral. Mrs. Hoppel and the Pearces came out to Adams county from the Midwest about the same time in the 1890s. Dies At 101 WASHTUCNA - Mrs. Mason Ray received word last week of the death of her great uncle, Rev. Stanley May at Elkin, N.C. Mr.s May had reached the age of 101 and died of complications resulting from a broken hip. Fifteen hundred guests were present at the party a year ago last May when he celebrated his 100th birthday anniversary. David Knight Buried In Local Cemetery Funeral services for David Knight, 80, who died last Thursday at the Phillip Christel home here, were held recently with the Rev. Russell Eylander officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Knight had been a resident of Adams county for more than 30 years. His death followed a series of paralytic strokes. James Etheridge LIND - James Etheridge a former Lindite passed away at Spokane Friday. He is the son of MR. and Mrs. Ransum Etheridge of Palouse, Wash. James Etheridge is well known here having lived here when a boy. He lived on the old Achtziger ranch with his parents about 18 years ago. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, one son, two sisters and one brother. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 22, 1936, issue None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 29, 1936, issue Last Rites Held For Weber Girl Funeral services for Ellen Louise Weber, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Weber, were held this afternoon at the Zion Congregational church, with the Rev. Frederick Burkhardt officiating. She died Monday at 9:45 p.m. following a five-weeks' illness. Death was believed due to strathcoma, a cancerous infection of the bone. Miss Weber was injured 18 months ago when she fell while playing at school here. She had been taken to bone specialists throughout the northwest and was prounounced cured last summer. About five weeks ago she was taken ill with a cold which is believed to have stirred up the bone infection. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Weber and eight brothers, Eugene, Ernest, Peter, Thomas, Robert, Jerry, Jack and Michael. She will be buried in the Lincoln-Adams county cemetery, of Marcellus. August Larson Killed By Train August Larson, 56, former resident of Ritzville, was killed by a Great Northern passenger train near Marlin Tuesday morning while he was walking down the tracks, according to word reaching here today. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Marlin. Mr. Larson was a nephew of Jack Armstrong and Mrs. William Moore, a former resident. He lived here a long time and will be remembered as a "fine fellow" by all the old-timers. Mr. Larson was walking down the track to help some friends bale hay in a nearby field and was unable to hear the train because he was slightly deaf. Rites Held For Wreck Victim Funeral services for Ferdinand Kosanke, 73, retired farmer who was killed in an automobile accident last Sunday were held yesterday afternoon at the Philadelphia Congregational church with the Rev. H. Nuetzmann officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mr. Kosanke was killed instantly and his wife was seriously injured when a heavy sedan he was driving blew a tire on a curve and careened to the opposite side of the road, overturning in a gully. The tragedy happened 12 miles southwest of here on the Columbia Basin highway about 10 a.m. Sunday. Mr. Kosanke's death was the fourth automobile accident fatality in Adams county since Jan. 1, 1936. Mrs. Kosanke is reported recovering in a Spokane hospital from her injuries. She suffered a fracture of the left femur and a few cuts and bruises on the face and body. Mr. Kosanke was born Nov. 23, 1862, in Paris, Russia, and came to this country when a young man. He had lived in Adams county 28 years and in the United States 43 years. Besides his widow, he is survived by a sister, Sarah of New Westminster, B. C.; a brother, John of Independence, Ore.; daughter, Mrs. Katharine Stehr, Ritzville; five sons, David, American Falls, Ida.; Reinhold, Ritzville; Samuel and Simon, Cottage Grove, Ore.; and John of Riverside, Calif.; and two brothers, Andrew and Edward in North Dakota. Opal Janes' Brother Killed In Accident James Wickersham, 14, Clarkston, brother of Mrs. Opal Janes, was killed in a hunting accident near Asotin last Saturday. Wickersham and several friends were getting out of a truck when one of the boys lifted a gun, the hammer catching on the edge of the seat and firing a charge of shot that struck Wickersham. Paul Janes went to Clarkston Sunday and returned Monday, bringing his son, Jimmy, back with him. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 5, 1936, issue Julius McLean OF Benge Dies Julius McLean, 81, Benge pioneer who died last Friday, was buried Sunday in the Ritzville cemetery following services from the Haight & Son chapel with the Rev. Richard Decker officiating. He had been ailing for some time. Death was due to heart trouble. Besides his widow, he is survived by four sons, Monroe, St. Maries, Ida.; James, North Caroline; Milton, Medical Lake; Benjamin, Benge; and two daughters, Mrs. Hetty Evanson, Kennewick, and Mrs. Olivene Barry, Santa, Ida. Suicide Victim Is Buried Here Funeral services for Victor L. Wagner, 27, insurance salesman who committed suicide last Saturday, were held Tuesday morning at the Philadelphia Congregational church with the Rev. H. Nuetzmann officating. Mr. Wagner shot himself with a .22 caliber rifle in his apartment above the Pastime about 3 p.m. Saturday. The tragedy was discovered about 5 p.m. by Emil Wagner, a brother, and Reuben Rehn, who entered the apartment unaware that anything had happened. Mr. Wagner had been in ill health for several years and Sheriff Melven Oestreich attributed his actions to ill health. He had been suffering from rheumatism and feared he would become a cripple, Oestreich said. Besides his brother, Emil, Wagner is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Marion Swesey, Clyde, Wash.; Mrs. Roland Norton, Portland, Ore.; Hilda, Seattle; and Mary, Walla Walla; and two other brothers, Solomon, Ritzville, and George, Walla Walla. Last Rites Held For John Evans Funeral services for John Evans, 77, pioneer Ritzville carpenter who died Monday morning at his home here, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Haight & Sons parlors with the Rev. R. D. Decker officiating. Mr. Evans had been ill for some time. His immediate death was due to heart trouble. He had lived here more than 30 years, coming here from Virginia, his birthplace. He is survived by two sons, Lan, Ritzville, and Bob, address unknown, and a daughter, Mrs. Viola Norman, Ritzville. Daniel Roloff Passed Sunday Daniel K. Roloff, 72, retired farmer died Sunday at the home of son, Julius, in Ralston, was buried in the Ritzville cemetery Wednesday following funeral services at the Philadelphia church. The Rev. H. Nuetzmann officiated. Mr. Roloff came here when a young man from Russia and had lived in Ritzville over 25 years. He was building a new home at the time of his death. Besides his widow, Magdalena, he is survived by four sons, Daniel O., Ralston; Fred, Olympia; William and Julius, Ritzville; and a daughter, Mrs. William Sands, Wenatchee. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 12, 1936, issue Mrs. Deerheim's Funeral Today LIND -Mrs. Mike Deerheim, 60, passed away at the St. Luke's hospital in Spokane last Sunday. Besides her husband she leaves four sons, John, Adam, Ed and Fred, all of Lind, two daughters, Mrs. Jake Rein of Lind, and Tillie at the home; four grandchildren, two sisters, both of Russia, and two brothers, Christ Libiege of Jamestown, N.D., and John Libiege of Saskatchewan. She was born in Kassel, Russia, April 17, 1876, and married Mike Deerheim in Russia in 1898. Mr. and Mrs. Deerheim homesteaded in North Dakota for 14 years and then moved to Gigly, N.D., where they lived for six years. They came to Lind in 1919 and have lived in this district ever since. Funeral services will be held at the Congregational church with the Rev. Herch and Rev. J. Rott officiating Thursday afternoon. L. R. McKee's Brother Dies In Albuquerque L. R. McKee received word the first of the week that his brother, Everett, 57, died at Albuquerque, N.M., Monday night. He is survived by his wife and three children at the home and three brothers besides Mr. McKee. Funeral services were held in Albuquerque. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 19, 1936, issue Funeral Is Held For Mrs. Kramer Funeral services for Mrs. Suzanna Kramer, 77, who died Saturday night at her home here, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. E. A. Rein officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mrs. Kramer had been in ill health for some time. Her death was due to cancer, according to Dr. W. H. Sweet, attending physician. Mrs. Kramer's husband, John P. Kramer, died in 1922. She was born in Germany Jan. 3, 1859, and came to this country at an early age. She had been a resident of Adams county for 33 years, coming here from Wisconsin. She is survived by four sons, Conrad, Marshfield, Wis.; John, Spokane; and Fred and Peter, Ritzville; and five daughters, Mrs. Russel Lightel, Ritzville; Mrs. Margaret McCall, Butte, Mont.; Mrs. Molly Harrison, Tacoma; Mrs. Mary Scheurman, Abbotsford, Wis.; and Mrs. Susie Hahn, Portland, Ore. Harry F. Kelley Fatally Injured Harry F. Kelley, 58, former resident, was fatally wounded at his home in Helmville, Mont., last Monday when a pistol he was handling exploded. Mr. Kelley was one of the largest farmers in the Washtucna area until about 18 years ago when he moved to Montana. He farmed the land now occupied by Frank Daughterty and J. Haase, and lived in the home now occupied by Victor Mason. Mr. Kelley and his son figured in a lawsuit in Adams county last winter over the estate of the late Mrs. Kelley. He died Tuesday in a hospital in Missoula. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Walla Walla. William Snyder and William Scott of Washtucna will attend the services. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 26, 1936, issue Christ Krehbiel LIND - Christ Krehbiel, 72, passed away at the Deaconess hospital in Spokane about 1:30 a.m. Monday. Besides his wife, Augustas Krehbiel, he is survived by two sons, Bill and Christ at the home, one brother, John, Lind, two sisters, Mrs. Susan Neare, and Mrs. Mary Vogt of Philadelphia. He was born at Bavaria, Germany, July 4, 1964, and was married at Ritzville in 1904 to Augustas Wolff. He came to this country with his parents when he was 13 years old and settled in Illinois. He had a homestead north of Lind which he farmed. He retired from farming 21 years ago. He has been ailing since the early part of the spring and was taken to the hospital in September. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church Wednesday at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Galli of Odessa officiating. The body is at the Precht Funeral home. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 3, 1936, issue Funeral Held For D. McGregor HOOPER - Funeral services for Donald McGregor, 39, of Hooper, who died Thanksgiving day in Portland, were held Monday at the Smith funeral home in Spokane with the Rev. D. A. Russell officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery. Hooper residents were shocked by the death of McGregor, who left Tuesday of last week to spend the Thanksgiving holidays with his family in Portland. He became ill shortly after his arrival and was taken to a hospital, where he died of pneumonia. Mr. McGregor was a member of the marine corps during the World War. He is survived by his widow, Ruth, two daughters, Mary Jane and Joan and many other relatives. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 10, 1936, issue Mrs. Justine Jeske LIND - Mrs. Justine Jeske, 79, died at her home in Warden Sunday. She was born in Russia June 17, 1857, and had lived in Warden for the past 35 years. She has been ill for some time. Her husband, Carl, died three years ago. She is survived by three sons, Christ and Edward of Warden and Carl of Palouse; seven daughters, Justine Labes, Mary Labes and Lydia Gust of Lind, Rose Wies of Canada, Lena Radick and Emma Jeske of Warden, and Martha Sherman of Portland. Burial services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Congregational church at Warden. The Rev. H. Hoersch officiated. Harvey Caldwell Is Buried Here Funeral services for Harvey J. F. Caldwell, former Ritzville resident who died recently in Yakima, were held at the Haight parlors here Wednesday of last week with the Rev. R. D. Decker officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mr. Caldwell lived here more than 25 years, but moved to Yakima about 12 years ago to be with his son, Roscoe. He was a retired farmer. He was born in Washington county, Tennessee, and came here at an early age. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America lodge. Besides his son, Roscoe, he is survived by seven sisters, Mrs. Susan Maurer, Ritzville; Mrs. Ida Gladwell, Banning, Calif.; Mrs. Alice Grove, Mesa, Calif.; Mrs. Martha Irwin, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Lydia Kirby and Mrs. Drusilla Eldson, Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. Laura Ally, Pleasant Hope, Mo.; two brothers, William of Springfield, Mo.; and Levi of Bolwar, Mo.
