She was born in Tacoma Nov. 16, 1914, and was an invalid all her life. Funeral services were held at the home Friday, Dec. 31, at 2 o'clock with Rev. A. K. Walborn officiating. Mrs. John Gray and Miss Catherine Gray accompanied by Miss Ada Gill sang. Burial was in the Washtucna cemetery. Casket bearers were Will Scott, W. E. Snyder, R. W. Snyder, J. S. Gray, Joe Gray and Archie Staley. Funeral Services Held For E. Smith LIND - Funeral services were held today for Everett Smith from the Methodist church at 2 o'clock. He is the son of Warren Smith. He passed away at the Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane Monday after a ten day illness. Everett was a member of the graduating class of 1936. He was born at Ralston and was 20 years old at the time of his death. Surviving are his father, Warren Smith, five sisters, Dorothy, Ruby, Vera, Violet and Maulsy; five brothers, Chester, Ira, Alex, Herbert and Roy of Spokane. The Rev. R. Decker of Ritzville officiated. The body was in charge of the Precht funeral home. Funeral Held For Mrs. C. Willging LIND - Mrs. Christina Willging, 82, of Neppel, pioneer of Adams county, died here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Phillip Roth, Dec. 30. Heart failure was the cause of her death. Mrs. Willging had been ill about a week and came here last Tuesday to receive medical care. Mrs. Willging was born in Southern Russia and she and her husband came to the United States in 1900, settling on a farm a few miles north of Lind, where she lived until a year ago, when she moved to Neppel. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Rebekah Roth, Lind, Mrs. Louise Horst, Pullman, Mrs. Martha Kleveno, Colfax, and Mrs. Sophia Rehn, Sprague; a son, Fred, at Walla Walla; and sixteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held last Saturday from the Lutheran church, the Rev. Mr. Brockman of Odessa officiating. Burial was here and the body was in charge of the Precht funeral home. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 13, 1938, issue Last Rites Held For Mrs. Thomsen Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Thomsen, 49, sister of Mrs. Ella Rosenoff, who died last week in Spokane, were held at the Zion Congregational church Tuesday afternoon with the Revs. Mr. Davis of Wilson Creek and F. Burkhardt officiating. Mrs. Thomsen had been ill about a year and died at the Rockwood clinic. She lived in Ritzville a number of years, moving from here in 1903 with her husband. Mrs. Anna Thomsen (Spanger) was born in Minonk, Ill., Jan. 25, 1877, and came to Ritzville with her family at an early age. She was married Oct. 23, 1895, to Hans Thomsen by the Rev. Sherley. In 1905 they moved to Spokane where they lived until 1912, moving then to Bonners Ferry, Ida. In 1918 the family moved to their present home on a farm southeast of Wilson Creek. Besides her widower, Mrs. Thomsen is survived by two sons, Ingwer and Elmer, at home; four brothers, George Spanger, Cashmere; Ed Spanger, Ephrata; John Spanger, Seattle; Will Spanger, Peshastin; four sisters, Mrs. Ella Rosenoff, Ritzville; Mrs. Johannah Weiland, Alameda, Calif.; Mrs. Marie Hogelganz, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Wilhelmina Smyth, Chicago, Ill. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 20, 1938, issue Hold Last Rites For Mr. Koeplin Funeral services for Carl Koeplin, 77, pioneer who died Sunday at his home here, were held yesterday at the Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. E. A. Rein officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Mr. Koeplin had been ill about six months and his death was not unexpected. His death was attributed to cancer of the spine. Carl August Koeplin was born in Bucholz, Germany, Sept, 29, 1860, the son of Fred and August (Rutz) Koeplin. He came to the United States in 1885, locating in Nebraska and moving to Walla Walla two years later. He located on a homestead near Walla Walla but in 1897 moved to Ritzville where he farmed five miles east of town until 14 years ago when he moved to town. He was married in 1893 to August Pauers. She died May 7, 1924, and he was married again on March 18, 1927, to Mrs. Ida Eisrman of Walsh, Alberta. Besides his widow, Mr. Koeplin is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Kroeger, Riverside, Calif., Mrs. Amelia Nissen, Ritzville, and Mrs. Elsie Leonard, Ralston; six sons, Albert, Greensboro, N.C., Emil, Smithfield, Neb., William, Henry, Richard and Otto of Ritzville; and three sisters, Mrs. Wilhelmina Wellsandt, Mrs. August Biermann, both of Ritzville, and Mrs. Amelia Rushmeir of Lind. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 27, 1938, issue Funeral For Frank Koch To Be Sunday Frank Koch, 85, Adams county pioneer, died early this morning at his home here following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. F. Burkhardt officiating. Rolland Ramer Died Last Week Funeral services for Rolland Ramer, 13, junior high school student who died last Thursday, were held last Saturday at the Methodist Episcopal church with the Rev. Richard Decker officiaing. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mr. Ramer died from an infection which spread from a small pimple on his lip. He died in a Spokane hospital. Rolland Edward Ramer was born in Montana on June 16, 1924, and moved to Washington with his parents some time ago. He was a student in the local schools at the time of his death. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Reuben Becker, and his father, Edward C. Ramer. Pallbearers were James Kadlec, Del Jones, Robert Krause, Pete Weber, Alvin Allert and Aaron Leisle. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 3, 1938, issue Wilburt Culbert Funeral Friday Funeral services for Wilbur Culvert, 15, high school student who died Tuesday afternoon, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. T. Sturtevant officiating. Burial will be in the Ritzville cemetery. Young Culbert died after less than a week's illness with pneumonia. His death occurred at the Allen hospital. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom W. Culbert. Wilbur Culbert was born in Othello and attended school there until several years ago when his family moved to Ritzville. Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Opal of Ritzville and Mrs. Sylvester Rohlinger of Othello. Last Rites Held For Frank Koch Funeral services for Frank Koch, 85, resident of Adams tounty, since 1889 who died last week, were held Sunday at the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. F. Burkhardt officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. He became seriously ill about the first of January and died at 6 a.m. last Thursday. He was born June 22, 1852, in Kolb, Russia, and was married to Katherine Marguerite Oestreich in 1872. The couple moved to the United States in 1888 settling at Walla Walla, but remained there only one year, moving to a ranch five miles west of here. In 1901, the family moved to a ranch two miles from Ritzville. In 1907, the family moved again to Ritzville and retired. Besides his widow, he is survived by three children, Mrs. H. W. Thiel, Henry F. Koch and Miss Dena Koch; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. His pallbearers were four grandsons and two great grandsons, Floyd Thiel, Floyd Koch, Herman Heimbigner, Frank Heimbigner, Archie Rehn and Alvin Rehn. One daugher, Mrs. Henry Heimbigner, died in 1918. His widow is also 85 years old, there being only 18 days difference in their age. Elvin Wilson Best Died In Lind Monday LIND-Elvin Wilson Best passed away at his home here in Lind Monday. He has lived in Lind for 39 years. He has been a life-long member of the Baptist church. He is also a retired farmer. He was county commissioner for three terms. He was born in Michigan July 19, 1857. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Honora Best, two sisters, Mrs. W. B. Cutting and Mrs. Evelyn Miller of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Edgar Best of Gig Harbor. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, with the Rev. S. J. Yaggy officiating. The body was in charge of Precht funeral home, and interment will be made in the family plot in the Lind cemetery. Funeral Held For Mrs. W. Courage Funeral services for Mrs. Wilhelmina Courage, 48, of Seattle, former Ritzville resident who died last Thursday in Seattle, were held Monday afternoon at the Philadelphia Congregational church. The Rev. Mary McKee, famed Seattle woman minister, and the Rev. H. Nuetzmann conducted the services. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mrs. Courage died following a serious operation in a Seattle hospital. Wilhelmina (Courage) Bauer was born in Ritzville April 12, 1889, and spent her early girlhood here, moving later to Seattle. On July 3, 1936, she was married to George Courage of Seattle. Surviving Mrs. Courage besides her husband, are two sons by a former marriage, Norman Dean and Clark Edward, Davenport; two brothers, Henry Bauer and Peter Bauer, Ritzville; Mrs. W. F. Taylor, Pullman, and Mrs. Marie Johnson, Jerome, Ida. Funeral Held For Mrs. Ara Ann Long Funeral services for Mrs. Ara Ann Long, 78, of Spokane, one of the earliest settlers in Adams county who died Jan. 19 in Spokane, were held Jan. 22 at the Smith funeral home in Spokane with Dr. Paul Calhoun officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery. Mrs. Long had been ill for two years. Ara Ann (Saint) Long was born near Whitten, Iowa, May 8, 1859, and was married to Clark Long in 1874. He died in 1908. Thirteen children were born to this union, seven of whom survive. Mrs. Long and her husband and child came west in 1877, taking up a homestead and timber in Garfield county near Pomeroy where they lived for five years as real pioneers. In 1882, they came to Ritzville, being among the first four famlies to settle here. In 1900 they moved to Paha and the family remained there until 1914. Mr. Long died at Soap Lake during this time. Mrs. Long and her family moved to a farm near Cheney in 1914, and one year later moved to Spokane where she has lived for the past 22 years. Surviving her are four sons, Calvin of Colbert, John of Almira, Walter of Sprague, and Joseph of Spokane; three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Dunlap of Spokane, Mrs. Maude Collier, Steptoe, and Mrs. Hazel Sullivan, Washtucna; 29 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 10, 1938, issue None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 17, 1938, issue Anniversary Has Tragic Climax Mrs. Henry Rosenoff Buried Tuesday Death brought a tragic anti-climax to the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rosenoff last week. Although Mrs. Rosenoff was deathly ill Friday, the couple received many beautiful flowers, phone calls and congratulatory messages. She died Friday, the day after the celebration. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. F. Burkhart officiating, assisted by Rev. J. Morach. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mrs. Rosenoff had been ill for only about two weeks before her death. The couple had planned a gala celebration of their anniversary, before she became bed-ridden. Mrs. Ella Wilms Rosenoff was born in Minonk, Ill., Sept. 14, 1869. She came to Ritzville with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Spanjier when she was 16 years old. On Feb. 11, 1888, she was married to Mr. Henry Rosenoff. They were the second couple to be married in Adams county. The couple lived on a farm west of Ritzville in 1905. She was a life-long member of the Zion Congregational church. She died at the age of 68 years. Besides her widower, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Henry Danekas and Mrs. Emil Wellsandt; two sons, William and Walter Rosenoff; four brothers, three sisters and eight grandchildren. Mrs. John Thiel Dies Suddenly Mrs. John Thiel, 65, Ritzville pioneer died in a Spokane hospital Wednesday noon, less than 24 hours after she had suffered a paralytic stroke. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Philadelphia Congregational church. Mrs. Thiel suffered a stroke Tuesday afternoon and was rushed to a Spokane hospital that evening in the Haight and Sons ambulance. She never regained complete consciousness after the stroke. She has lived here more than 40 years, coming here from Illinois at an early age. A complete obituary will be published in next week's paper. (No obit found following week) Mrs. Rudolph Dies HOOPER - It is with sad regret we learn that Mrs. J. B. Fagg's daughter, Mrs. Billie Rudolph of Lacrosse, formerly Ruth Fagg before her marriage, died at her home in Lacrosse early Saturday morning of heart trouble, after an illness of several months. The neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Fagg extend their heartfelt sympathy in this bereavement. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 24, 1938, issue Mrs. Smith Dies LIND - Mrs. Eliza Jane Smith passed away at her home in Othello Saturday evening. She was born in Rock Island, Ill., Jan. 10, 1860. She is 79 years, 1 month and 8 days old. Her husband, Joseph Frances Smith, preceded her in death about 10 years ago. She is survived by six grandchildren and three children, Joseph E. Cameron, Othello, Theodore E. Smith, Easton, Wash., and Charlotte Storz of Western, Colo. Funeral services were held in the Lind Catholic church with Father Flour of Ritzville officiating, on Thursday at 10 o'clock. Interment will be at the Fairmont cemetery in Spokane. The body was in charge of the Precht funeral home. Schlecht Funeral WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for H. A. Schlecht, who passed away last Thursday morning, were held at the Community church last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Brother Sworner of Spokane officiated. Music was furnished by Mrs. Sworner and Mrs. Miller, also of Spokane. The casket bearers were R. J. Price, W. T. Harris, William Scott, Fey Sitton, H. H. Hammond and Lee Wilson. Interment was in the Washtucna cemetery. Herman Adolph Schlecht was born in Beemer, Nebraska, on April 4, 1870. On April 10, 1893 he was united in marriage to Annie Theresa Keisler. To this union four children were born: Mrs. Donald Metzgus of Glendale, Cal., Mrs. Warren Roberts of Corvallis, Ore., Arthur H. of Rupert, Ida., and Alvin E. Washtucna. This union was broken by the death of the wife and mother on March 31, 1903. In 1906 Mr. Schlecht moved to Oregon where he raised his family to maturity. He went to Canada in 1916 and the following year on Sept. 12 he married Bertha E. Grant. To them was born a son, James H. He came to Washtucna in March, 1935, where he resided until his death. He was an "International Bible Student." Surviving are his widow, two daughters, three sons, one step-son, Lester, and 14 grandchildren, also two brothers, Ernest and Charles in Nebraska. Funeral Is Held For Heinemann Funeral services for William Heinemann, 77, Ritzville pioneer who died last Saturday at his home were held Tuesday afternoon from the Nazarene church with the Rev. T. Sturtevant officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mr. Heinemann was born in Germany, April 18, 1860, and came to the United States in 1880, first settling in Chicago. He married Anna Kister and in 1887 they moved to Washington, finally locating on a farm four miles south of Ritzville. He first became ill exactly 50 years to the day from the time he arrived in Ritzville. Eleven children were born to this union, four of which died in infancy and one, who died as an adult, Mrs. Anna Little. His first wife died in 1911 and in 1932 he married Mrs. Carrie Richards of Ritzville. He is survived by three sons, Henry, Carl and Alfred, all of Ritzville; three daughters, Mrs. Charles Baumann, Ritzville; Mrs. Bertha Richter, Livingston, Calif., and Mrs. Gus Basner, Santa Monica, Calif., 27 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Hold Last Rites For Mrs. Clodius Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie C. Clodius of Spokane, 63, former Ritzville resident who died in Spokane last week, were held Monday in Spokane, with the Rev. F. Burkhardt officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery, Spokane. Mrs. Minnie Clodius nee Pfannekuchen, was born near Madison, Wis., April 23, 1874, and came to Ritzville with her parents at the age of 13. She was married to C. H. Clodius on Dec. 20, 1884. The family lived in Ritzville until about 14 years ago when they moved to Spokane. She was a lifelong member of the Zion Congregational church. Besides her widower, C. H. Clodius, she is survived by three sons, Carl C. Clodius, Colfax, A. O. Clodius, Ellensburg and H. T. Clodius, New York, N.Y.; one daughter, Mrs. Clara C. Griffith, Rathdrum, Ida., four brothers, Henry and William Pfannekuchen, Ritzville; John Pfannekuchen, Kelso, and Fred Pfannekuchen, Medical Lake; one sister, Mrs. Jacob Schott, Ritzville. Pallbearers were Con Pfenning, A. B. Ott, Herman Freese, H. J. Vehrs, E. L. Starring and H. W. Thiel, all of Ritzville. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 3, 1938, issue Funeral Is Held For Ludwig Pflugrad, Lind LIND-Funeral services for Ludwig Pflugrad, 85, former Lind resident who died Feb. 23 in Yakima, were held in Lind Tuesday with burial in the Lind cemetery. Ludwig Pflugrad was born March 7, 1853, in South Russia. In 1876, at the age of 23, he was married to Louisa Messerle and this union was blessed with nine children, of whom six are still living. His wife preceded him in death, dying Aug. 3, 1902. He came to the United States in 1883 and settled in Adams county in 1888. He operated a farm six miles north of Lind for many years. He spent his later years in Yakima. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Regina Fromm, Yakima, Mrs. Dora Schrenk, Delco, Ida., Mrs. Maria Rothenberger, Lodi, Calif., and Mrs. Christine Greenwalt, Odessa; two sons, Jacob Pflugrad, Walla Walla, David Pflugrad, Medical Lake, and 33 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Adam Angell, Former Resident, Passes Adam Angell, former Ritzville resident, died recently in Montana, according to word received here this week. Mr. Angell lived here between 1900 and 1910 and was engaged in business with his brother, John M. Angell. He moved to Spokane from here and to Valier, Mont., in 1913. Funeral Is Held For Orr Greene Pioneer Banker Died In Seattle Funeral services for Orr H. Greene, former Ritzville banker, who died last Saturday in Seattle, were held here Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church with the Rev. Richard R. Decker officiating. The body was taken to Spokane for interment in the Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Greene had been in ill health for some time, but had not been confined to his home. His death came as a sudden shock to his family and friends, since he was in Ritzville only a short time ago transacting business. Orr Henry Greene was born in Pennsylvania. His father, Nelson H. Greene, came to Ritzville in 1884 and started the first store in Adams county. It was located in the building now occupied by the Pastime. After retiring from the store, the Greenes, in conjunction with J. E. Prouty, platted a number of additions to the city. In 1901, the Greenes opened the Pioneer State Bank. The older Greene was president, Orr was cashier and W. H. Martin, who came here from Nebraska, was assistant cashier. The bank erected the building now occupied by the Old National branch. After the bank was nationalized Mr. Greene became president and remained in that position until its consolidation with the First National. He was also connected with banks in Lind, Washtucna, Medical Lake, Kahlotus and Almira. The Greenes owned a large amount of land west of this city. Mr. Greene built the large brick home now occupied by Mrs. Dora Leonard. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Anne Greene of Seattle, Mrs. H. B. Frank, Fairfield, and Mrs. H. B. Tyree of Detroit, Mich.; and a sister, Mrs. Mattie E. Martin, Tacoma. He was a life member of the El Katif temple of the Shrine. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 10, 1938, issue Former Resident Commits Suicide Ralph Yeaman, former Ritzville school teacher, committed suicide in Seattle last Friday, according to word received here Saturday morning. Mr. Yeaman's body was found slumped against the rear bumper of his car with a shotgun nearby in a clump of woods near the Sand Point golf club. Corners gave financial difficulties as the reason for his act. He taught school here from 1912 to about 1918, according to S. E. Edwards, a pupil in his classes, and Emil Wellsandt, a friend. He was in the contracting business with several of his brothers in Seattle at the time of his death. Mr. Yeaman taught the manual training and other subjects in the Ritzville schools and came here direct from Cheney normal school. Former Resident Dies In California John M. Woehr, former Ritzville resident, died March 8 at his home in Pomona, Calif., according to word received here this week by friends and relatives. Mr. Woehr was one of the earliest settlers in Adams county, taking up a homestead near Marcellus. He was a brother of Mrs. George Proctor and a brother-in-law of Mrs. V. A. Chargois. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 17, 1938, issue Last Rites Held For Former Resident W. H. Martin, president of the Ritzville State Bank, was in Spokane Tuesday, attending the funeral of C. E. Shipman. Mr. Shipman was in business here in the early days, and was vice president of the Pioneer National bank, while Mr. Martin was cashier. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 24, 1938, issue Funeral Is Held For Dr. E. Ardiel Dr. Evan C. Adriel (sic), of Washtucna was found dead in a room in the Multnomah hotel, Portland, Monday morning according to word received here this week. Funeral services were held this morning at the Hillingsworth funeral home in Portland with the Rev. A. K. Walborn of the Washtucna Community church conducting the services. Dr. Ardiel had lived in Washtucna for the past three years and was well-known in southern Adams county. He had taken J. B. Gross to Portland last Friday for medical treatment. His widow left for Portland immediately upon hearing of his death. Besides his widow, he is survived by one son, John Evan, and a daughter, Mrs. Sara Catherine. Last Rites Held For Johann Gross Funeral services for Johann Gross, Sr., pioneer of the Ralston district, who died last Friday, were held Monday afternoon at the German Congregational church near Ralston with the Rev. H. Hoersch of Warden officiating. Mr. Gross died suddenly Friday night. He had been in Ritzville Friday afternoon and was apparently in good health. His death was due to bronchial pneumonia. He was at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. William Gross, when his death occurred. Johann Gross was born Aug. 1, 1843, in Kolb, Russia, and was married to Caroline Radke in 1873. They came to the United States in 1902 and settled at the present home near Ralston. Sixteen children were born to the union and eight of them died in Russia. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. John Schulz, Ralston; Mrs. Louis Tiede, Sharon, Wash.; and Mrs. Fred Sukut, Mendham, Sask.; and one son, Ben Gross, Lind. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 31, 1938, issue Thaut Funeral Will Be Sunday Funeral services for Mary Thaut, 28, Ritzville woman who died yesterday morning in Spokane, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Philadelphia Congregational church with services by the Rev. H. Neutzmann. Burial will be in the Ritzville cemetery. Miss Thaut had been ill about two months but was thought to be recovering rapidly when her death occurred at the Sacred Heart hospital, Spokane. She had been suffering from heart disease. She was born in Russia and came to this country when three years old with her parents. She attended Ritzville schools and was well-known here. She is survived by her father, Jacob J. Thaut, and two brothers, Daniel and Jacob, Jr. Rites Held For Mrs. M. Davidson Funeral services for Mrs. Lillian Davidson, former Ritzvilleite who later moved to the coast and died March 21 in Seattle, were held last Thursday at the Emanuel Lutheran church here with the Rev. E. A. Rein officiating. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery. Mrs. Davidson, the former Lillian Clara Rutz, was born here Dec. 6, 1902, and had been ill for about 7 months prior to her death. Besides her husband, Mark Davidson, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Caroline Rutz, Ritzville; four sisters, Mrs. Augusta Bazille, Ritzville, Mrs. Helen Lynch, Portland, Agnes and Alma Rutz of Spokane; and one brother, Henry Ritz, (sic), Ritzville.
