He had been around Ritzville off and on for the last 20 or 25 years, leaving here about three years ago. He was a farm laborer. Mr. Holmes was about 66 years old and was born in Iowa. He was a member of the Ritzville Oddfellows lodge. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 11, 1940, issue Carol Ann Schafer Dies Monday Morn Five-day old Carol Ann Schafer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Schafer, died Monday morning at 1:30 a.m. at the Huppert hospital. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Glade C. Johnson Dies Saturday Glade C. Johnson, 52, died suddenly Saturday evening at the home of Mrs. Emma Frost following a heart ailment. He had been in the Little Club cigar store earlier in the evening and complained of feeling ill. He died about 10:45 p.m. Mr. Johnson was born in Illinois and had resided in Washington several years, coming to Ritzville three years ago. The body was shipped to Douds, Iowa, for burial. He is survived by one sister and two brothers in the east. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 18, 1940, issue Services Friday For John Thaut Funeral services for John J. Thaut, 70, Ritzville pioneer who died Monday, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. Burkhardt, officiating. Mr. Thaut died at 5:30 p.m. at his home. He was born in Kolb, Russia, Nov. 2, 1869, and moved direct from Russia to Adams county about 40 years ago. He was married to Anna Elizabeth Horst in 1892 in Russia. Mr. Thaut was employed by the county road department for 23 years but became paralyzed about eight years ago and has been bedridden ever since. Besides his widow, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Katheryn Stamm, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Lydia Wagner, Ritzville; and Amelia, at home; and six sons, Lavine, Jacob, Henry, Rudolph and Solomon, all of Ritzville, and Harold of Spokane. Funeral Held For Mrs. Susie Bender Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Tacoma for Mrs. Susie Bender, 46, sister of Mrs. Herbert Steffen of Ritzville, and one-time resident. She died Saturday morning following a stroke the preceding day. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Christel of Longview, who lived in Ritzville a number of years ago. Mrs. Steffen was called to Tacoma Friday night. Isaac Hoskins Dies WASHTUCNA - Isaac C. Hoskins, 73, a former Washtucna resident and a cousin of Calvin and Thomas Elliott and Mrs. Margaret Griffith, died suddenly at his home in San Jose, Calif., Dec. 30. The body was returned to Condon, Ore., where funeral services were held at the congregational church. The death came as a shock to his family as he had apparently been in good health. He got up Saturday morning as usual and started to dress. His wife returned to the bedroom to find him dead. Mr. Hoskins was born May 27, 1866, in Illinois. On June 25, 1894, he was married to Martha Thomas at Louisiana, Mo. They moved to California in 1897. Mr. and Mrs. Hoskins were possessed of the pioneer spirit and came to Washtucna where they homesteaded in 1888. After proving up on their homestead, the moved to Canada and later to Gilliam County, Ore., where they owned and operated a wheat ranch for a number of years. They then purchased a ranch in Lost Valley, which continued to be the family home until a couple of years ago, the ranch was sold and he moved to San Jose, Calif. Mrs. Hoskins died at the Lost Valley ranch and in 1933 he maried Mary B. Brown. Twelve children were born to Isaac and Martha Hoskins and ten of them survive their father. They are four daughters, Mrs. Mabel Potter and Mrs. Lucy Weimar of Condon; Mrs. Elsie Richards, Portland; Mrs. Evelyn Casteel, Pilot Rock; six sons Virgil, Condon; Dillon, Seattle; Clarence and Ray of Kinzua; Guy and Emmet of Portland. Also 13 grandchildren and the widow, Mrs. Mary Hoskins in San Jose. The funeral services were conducted by Robert J. Allen and the Masonic lodge of which he had been a member for 25 years. A Masonic service was also held at San Jose. P. L. Nissen Dies At State Hospital P. L. Nissen, 79, Ritzville pioneer, died Wednesday at the Medical Lake hospital. He was admitted to the state hospital almost two months ago, and death was caused by a brain tumor. Mr. Nissen was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark, in 1861. He came to this country 20 years ago and lived on a farm southeast of Ritzville. He is survived by seven children, four daughters, Mrs. Gerald Edmonds, Bellingham; Mrs. Wesley Robbins, Beverly; Mrs. William Schwisow, Hanford; Bertha Nissen, Portland; three sons, August Nissen, Coeur d'Alene; Harvey, Seattle, and Ernest, Yakima; eight brothers, D. A. Nissen, Ritzville; Chris in Nebraska, and six in Denmark. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. St. John Funeral Set For Saturday Funeral services for Mrs. Lena May St. John of Washtucna, 73, who died Wednesdsay at the Medical Lake state hospital, will be held Saturday afternoon at the Washtucna Community church. Mrs. St. John was the widow of the late Arthur St. John, who died during November. Hold Funeral For Emil Anderson OTHELLO - Funeral services were held Monday in Ephrata for Emil Anderson, 67, pioneer Crab Creek homesteader who died Friday at his home in Corfu. He settled on lower Crab Creek in 1906 and was one of the pioneer homesteaders in that region. Besides his widow, Clara, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edna Weatherite, Florence, Ore.; Mrs. Ida Christenson, Othello, and Mrs. Pearl Armstrong, Lacrosse; and two sons, Clinton of Corfu and Kermit of Spokane. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 25, 1940, issue Hold Funeral For Mrs. Reiman Funeral services for Mrs. Sol Reiman of Dryden, daugher of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Weber, former Ritzville residents, were held at Dryden last week. She died in a Seattle hospital at the age of 52. She is survived by seven children, Don, Herman, Melvin, Betty and Walter, Dryden; and Otto and Mrs. Ralph Harkins, Wenatchee; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Weber, and several brothers and sisters, including many from Odessa. Mr. and Mrs. David Weber, Mr. and Mrs. John Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Williams, Mrs. Jacob Heimbigner and Mrs. Dan Weber drove to Dryden on Wednesday to attend the funeral. William McKee Dies LIND - Funeral services for William Harrison McKee, 89, were held at the Methodist church at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Bennett officiating. Mr. McKee was born in Lincoln county, Kentucky, July 9, 1851. He died on Jan. 2, here at the home of his daughter. He was married to Alice Ann Thomas on July 9, 1879. He lived in Missouri, California and Oregon before moving to Washington in 1913 and had lived until the time of his death. He was a member of the G.A.R. During the Civil war he enlisted in the army in 1864 and fought with the 13th Kentucky cavalary for five months. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Emery Ott of Lind and Mrs. Helen Watkins of Spokane, and two grandchildren, Ida Watkins and Cleo Ott. The body was in charge of the Precht funeral home and interment was made in the local cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 1, 1940, issue Hold Last Rites For B. M. Sitton Homesteaded in 'Tucna Country WASHTUCNA - The Washtucna community was saddened Saturday morning by the sudden death of B. M. Sitton, 60, at his home, following a week's illness. He came to Washtucna in 1899, where he homesteaded and has farmed for 41 years. His chief interests were his children and his home and he was an ardent granger. When the Rimrock Grange was started 10 years ago he was a charter member and served as master of the grange for two years. He was also a member of the county, state and national granges. He was a great lover of music and loved to sing, being very generous with his good voice by taking part in all music activities and choirs. His place will be hard to fill and leaves a wide gap in a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Community church with the Rev. A. K. Walborn officiating. Interment was at the Washtucna cemetery. Benjamin Marcus Sitton was born Feb. 16, 1879 in Lincoln county, Missouri. He united with the Christian church in Hartford, Ill., when a young man. He came to Washington in 1899. He was married to Nettie Anna West, Sept. 12, 1900, at Ritzville, and to this union were born five children, all of whom survive him. He is survived by his widow; three sons, Virgil B., Chester W., and Merle R., all of Washtucna; two daughters, Mrs. Harvey Griffith of Colville and Mrs. Roy Gillis of Washtucna; two brothers, J. W. Sitton of Washtucna, and J. M. Sitton of Kennewick; two sisters, Merida Hadley of Hannibal, Mo., and Mrs. Anna Little of Walla Walla. Lucy Dies In Walla Walla Came to 'Tucna To Homestead '89 WASHTUCNA - Word was received here yesterday of the death of Mrs. Henry Lucy, 77, Washtucna pioneer, at her home in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Lucy came to Washtucna from Bates county, Missouri, in 1889 and homesteaded near Washtucna, where they lived until 1925 when they retired and moved to Walla Walla. Mrs. Lucy had been in ill health for some time and her death was not altogether unexpected. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Walla Walla. Besides her widower, she is survived by one son, W. R. Lucy, Walla Walla; three daughters, Mrs. Roy Rogers, Washtucna; Mrs. J. M. Clever, Boise, Ida.; and Miss Anna Lucy, at home. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 22, 1940, issue Mrs. C. Fifield's Funeral Today Funeral services for Mrs. Clark Fifield, 90, Adams county pioneer who died this week at Greenacres, were held this afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church with the Rev. Russell of Spokane, officiating. Mrs. Fifield came to Adams county with her husband in January 1887, and they homesteaded near Ralston. He died in 1926 and she remained on the homestead until 1932 when she moved to Greenacres, where she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ada Bailey. Sarah Elizabeth Fifield nee Snyder, was born Nov. 15, 1849, in Bruce, Mich., and was married in March 1866, to Clark Fifield in Michigan. Five children were born to this union. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, having joined at the age of 13. At the time of her death she was a member of the Presbyterian church of Ralston. Mrs. Fifield is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ada Bailey, Greenacres, and Mrs. Lina Valentine, Detroit; and three sons, Fred Fifield, Detroit, Mich.; Arch and Clarence Fifield, Ritzville; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Z. B. Hitchcock Dies WASHTUCNA - Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Washtucna Community Church for Z. B. Hitchcock, 79 years, (better known in Washtucna as 'Brad') with Rev. A. K. Walborn, officiating. He was born in Iowa, Jan. 18, 1861, and came to Washtucna in 1913, where he worked a good number of years for Jack McMillan in the blacksmith shop, later retiring. Although he had not been in the best of health for some time, his death came as a shock. He became suddenly ill with heart trouble in Snyder's store on Friday and was taken to Ritzville by Dr. Tomlinson and Mr. Schafer of Ritzville, but passed away soon after arriving there. There were no known relatives. Burial was made in the Washtucna cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 29, 1940, issue Don R. Estep Is Buried In Seattle BENGE - Don R. Estep, once a pioneer of the Othello country, died in Seattle Feb. 11. He is survived by three sons, Bill, Harry and Max of Seattle, and four daughters, Mrs. Lora Waters and Mrs. Blanch Lockhart of Seattle, Mrs. Nora Krause of Othello and Mrs. R. E. Watkins of Benge. John Correa Dies John Correa, 69, who for many years lived at Lind before moving to Ellensburg in 1919, died from a heart attack at Ellensburg last week. He had been an employee of the Kittitas county courthouse for nearly 20 years. At the time he and his wife lived in Lind, they had the misfortune of losing two small children in a fire which destroyed their home on the south side of town. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 7, 1940, issue Manfred Funeral Will Be Friday Popular Youth Succumbed Tues. Funeral services for Robert Otto Manfred, 20, who died Tuesday morning at Sacred Heart hospital, Spokane, following a lingering illness will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic church, Ritzville, with the Rev. A. E. Flour officiating. Burial will be in the Ritzville cemetery. Mr. Manfred, who operated a service station in Lacrosse for about six months, came to Ritzville last fall and became ill shortly afterwards. He was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Lind and attended the Lind schools, graduating from the Lind high school. He attended a business college in Portland for a while. On June 18, 1939, he was married to Miss Evelyn Streck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Streck of Ritzville. Besides his widow, Mr. Manfred is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Manfred of Lind; one brother, Alfonso, Lind; and one sister, Grace, Portland, Ore. Hauschild's Body Found In Bay Uncertainty over the fate of William J. Hauschild, 31-year-old Port Orchard man and former Ritzville boy, missing since Dec. 22, was solved recently with the finding of his body in the bay at Bremerton near the city wharf. Hauschild's body was discovered by the captain of the Bremerton-Port Orchard passenger boat as he started to back his vessel away from its landing. It is believed the fell off the wharf and was drowned. Mr. Hauschild was born in Ritzville Jan. 1, 1908, and spent much of his youth here. He is the son of Mrs. J. W. Mulligan of Pasco. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 14, 1940, issue Henry Clodius Dies Wednesday Funeral Services Tomorrow At 2 Ritzville residents were shocked Wednesday morning by the sudden death of Henry Clodius, 55, pioneer Ritzville machinist. Mr. Clodius worked as usual Tuesday afternoon and made business calls on many of his customers. He suffered a heart attack about 11 p.m. Tuesday at the Clarence Koch home where he lived, and died at 3 a.m. Wednesday, four hours later. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Haight Funeral home, with the Rev. R. Decker officiating. Burial will be in the Ritzville cemetery. Mr. Clodius was born July 22, 1884, in Nebraska and came to this community about 33 years ago. For the last 27 years he has operated a machine and general repair shop at 1 N. Adams. He was well known in Ritzville and had a host of friends. Mr. Clodius' wife and three children preceded him in death several years ago. He is survived by one brother, William; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Sellars and Mrs. Anna Oestreich, Ritzville; and Mrs. Emma Climie, Astoria, Ore. Mrs. Meyers Dies WASHTUCNA - Word was received here by Mrs. Lou Woodyard of the passing of Mrs. Hattie Meyers, 87, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Newins, in Bartlett, Kansas, March 1. Mrs. Meyers will be remembered here by the older folks, as she and her husband lived here for a good number of years. Mr. Meyers was a carpenter and built most of the older houses now standing in Washtucna. The property now owned by Tom Douglas and occupied by F. R. West, Jr., is known as the old Meyers' home. Mr. Meyers passed away about 12 years ago and since that time, Mrs. Meyers has made her home with her daughter. R. B. Ott Infant Buried Tuesday Funeral services for Richard Bruce Ott, ten-months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Ott, were held from the Episcopal church Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., with the Archdeacon Alexander Coffin of Spokane, reading the service. The infant was born April 19, 1939, at Spokane and died Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at the Sacred Heart hospital following an attack of pneumonia. Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Patricia, his grandfather, Sebastian Ott, and his grandmother, Mrs. Alex Mills of Sprague. Interment was in the Ritzville cemetery with Haight and Sons in charge. Mrs. B. Connel Rites Wednesday Funeral services for Mrs. Betsy Ann Connel, 78, Benge resident who died Monday, were held from the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Connel was born Nov. 28, 1861, in Georgia and was married to Dr. May of Alabama, to which three children were born, two surviving. After Dr. May passed away, she came to this county and was married to John D. Connel at Connell in 1902. Two children were born to them, one surviving. Mr. and Mrs. Connel moved to Benge in 1911 where she has since resided. Her husband died in 1921. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Morgan, Benge; Mrs. Walter Parish, Benge; one son, Clarence E. Connel, Washtucna; 5 stepchildren, Mrs. S. Hadlock, Frank Connel, Benge; William, Granger; Dee, Sunnyside; and Mrs. R. P. Jeffries, Klickitat; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Interment was in the Ritzville cemetery. Hold Funeral For Henry F. Schafer Funeral services for Henry F. Schafer, 74, who died last Thursday, were held from the Zion Congregational church, Sunday, with the Rev. F. Burkhardt officiating. Mr. Schafer was born in Frank, Russia, Oct. 18, 1865, and came to the United States in 1882, settling at Walla Walla for 13 years. On June 20th, 1892, he was united in marriage to Mable Schafer, and came to Adams county in 1901 where he had been living up to the time of his death. He is survived by his widow; four sons, Henry F. Schafer, Jr., Yakima; John and William Schafer, California; David Schafer; six daughters, Mrs. Lewis Lafriniere, Bellingham; Mrs. Everett Streeter, Mrs. Fred Kupers, Mrs. Bill Knapp, Harrington; Mrs. David Mann, Mt. Hope; Mrs. Cecil McCall and 14 grandchildren. Haight and Sons were in charge of the funeral. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 21, 1940, issue Walter Glenn Dies WASHTUCNA - Word was received Saturday of the passing of Walter Glenn at Calgary, Alta., at his home there. Mr. Glenn is the son of Mrs. Alice Glenn and a brother of Earl Glenn and Mrs. Frank Crofford of Washtucna. He lived with his folks on their ranch near Washtucna for a good number of years before marrying and moving to Canada. His health has been bad for a long time, the family knowing he could not be any better, but his death came as a shock. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Glenn left Saturday afternoon for Canada to attend the funeral. Hold Last Rites For Mrs. P. Bauer Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs. Peter Bauer, 66, who died Sunday, with the Rev. H. Neutzmann officiating at the Philadelphia Congregational church. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mrs. Bauer underwent an operation at a Spokane hospital last week, from which she never recovered. She became ill about two weeks ago. Ann Elizabeth Bauer, nee Adler, was born Dec. 19, 1873, in Kolb, Russia, and migrated to the United States with relatives in 1891, settling in Ritzville. In the same year she was married to Peter Bauer. For many years they made their home on a farm near Ritzville, but in 1916 retired and moved to Ritzville. Besides her widower, she is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Henry Thom, city; Mrs. Ercel Cox, Tacoma; Mrs. Joel Kenney, Seattle; Mrs. Cora Howe, Seattle and Mrs. Herbert Warnholz, Vallejo, Calif.; two sons, Lavine and William, Ritzville; and two step-sisters. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 28, 1940, issue Riley Carter Dies WASHTUCNA - Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Community church for Riley (Grandpa) Carter, 96 years old last December. Mr. Carter passed away last Sunday in Colfax. He has been an invalid for the past several years, but had hoped to live to celebrate his 100th birthday. He is survived by a son, Dave Carter, of Hooper and several other sons and one daughter, Mrs. Amanda Getty of Santa Ana, Calif. A son-in-law, Wm. Ovens of Hooper and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. Burial was made in the Washtucna cemetery. Mrs. Cora Gibford Died Last Week HATTON - Following a long illness with diabetis, Mrs. Cora Annette Gibford, 69, widow of the late Charles Uriah Gibford, who passed away Dec. 16, only three months ago, died at the hospital in Pasco on Tuesday morning, March 19. She was born in Jasper County, Missouri, on Aug. 12, 1870, the daughter of John and Sarah Fales. When a few weeks old, they moved to Newton, Iowa, where she was raised and educated. On March 26, 1893, she was united in marriage with Mr. Gibford at Newton, Iowa. She and her husband moved to Ritzville in 1901, where Mr. Gibford was a carpenter and contractor for several years. They resided in Washington until 1917 when they moved to Canada, returning to their old home in Hatton 13 years ago. Before making their home in Kennewick two years ago, they spent one year traveling. Mrs. Gibford was raised in a very religious Baptist home. During the years she lived in Ritzville, she was a member of the Baptist church and always an interested church worker as long as her health permitted. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harold Johnson of Hatton and Mrs. Fred Thurston of Kennewick; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Dell Metz of Seattle, Wash., and two brothers, Avery L. Fales, a Sunday school Missionary in Roswell, New Mexico, and Sidnew Fales of Spokane. Funeral services were held at the Mueller Funeral home in Kennewick Friday afternoon, March 22, at 2 o'clock. Rev. Myron Sharrard of Connell officiated, assisted by Rev. R. L. LaMott of Kennewick. Committal services were held at the grave for the body and also for the ashes of her husband, with burial in the Kennewick cemetery.
