Mrs. Couch was 90 years old and is survived by four sons, Rollin, John and Chester of Benton City, Wash., and Otto of California. She also leaves six daughters, Mrs. Ina Griffith of Portland; Mrs. Mary Griffith of Fairfield, Idaho; Mrs. Clara Grimm of Portland; Mrs. Elvira, Mrs. Marie Henry and Mrs. Mabel Kendell all of Long Beach, California. There are nineteen grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Fairfield, Idaho, Wednesday morning. McGill Funeral Held Here Sunday Funeral services for Ercil A. McGill, who died at the Ritzville General Hospital Thursday after a brief illness, were held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Duncan-Haight Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifford Knight officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial Cemetery. Mr. McGill had been employed as a cook in Ritzville for the past 18 months and was recently employed by the Clock Cafe. He was born June 11, 1904, and was 43 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, June; two daughters, Mrs. Maxine Deshazer of Clarkston, and Mrs. Betty Lou Schwassinger of Star, Idaho; his mother, Mrs. Lucinda McGill of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Ball of Chicago and Mrs. Walter Austin of California. Mrs. Krehbiel Called Monday LIND - Word was received here Monday evening of the death of Mrs. Molly Krehbiel at the Sacred Heart hospital. Mrs. Krehbiel had undergone an operation in the shoulder Monday morning and passed away at 9:30 p.m. At this writing, no time has been set for funeral services. Rites Held Sept. 27 For Norman Hansen Norman Edwin Hansen passed away Sept. 25. He was taken ill Wednesday and rushed to the Harbor View Hospital in Seattle where he died Thursday. Services were held at the Columbia Funeral Home Sept. 27 with the Rev. Myron Lindbloom officiating and Carl Helander as organist. Concluding services were at the Washell cemetery in Seattle. Norman had served four years in the navy. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Lawrence Pittman of Seattle, and a sister, Mrs. George Nickell of Lind. Former Resident Passes Away Sunday Word came of the death of Emil Behnke Sunday at midnight in a Walla Walla hospital. Otto Behnke of Washtucna is a brother. Mr. Behnke was well known in Washtucna as he and his wife lived for a number of years near Palouse Falls. Rites Held Friday For Hooper Pioneer HOOPER - Funeral services were held Friday morning, Sept. 26, at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Lacrosse for Joseph Marmes, 60, Hooper, who passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, at St. Ignatius hospital in Colfax after a week's illness. Born in Antigo, Wisconsin, on July 30, 1887, he came to Washington as a young man and had lived in Hooper and vicinity until the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and son Roland James, at the home; one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Woodruff of Omaha, Nebraska; five brothers and two grandchildren. He was laid to rest beside his eldest son, Paul Joseph, in the cemetery in Lacrosse. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 9, 1947 Jim Vostral Passes Tuesday Word was received here Wednesday of the death of Jim Vostral of Odessa. Mr. Vostral is well-known in this community and his brother, Joe, and sister, Mrs. S. J. Williams, reside here. His son, Rudolph, is manager of the Marcellus Warehouse Co. No definite information has been received here as to time and place of funeral services. Pioneer Passes Way Tuesday; Funeral Today Funeral services for Herman Sickman, who died Tuesday at the Ritzville General Hospital after a lingering illness, were held from the Emanuel Lutheran church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Duncan-Haight funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Sickman was 84 years old, being born in Germany, but came to the United States in 1888. He has been a resident of Ritzville ever since. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Deking; and two sons, August and William, both of this city. He also leaves ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Rites Saturday For Lind Youth LIND - Funeral services for Robert Milton Stelzer, 21, of Lind, who died after a lingering illness, were held from the Zion Congregational church in Lind, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Albert Hausauer of Odessa officiating. Interment was in the Lind cemetery. The Duncan-Haight Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Stelzer had spent most of his life in a wheel chair. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Stelzer; one brother, Raymond, two sisters, Mrs. Ieleen Niedens and Verna Stelzer, all of Lind; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Stelzer of Ritzville, and Mrs. Louis Radke of Olympia. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 16, 1947 Services Friday For Lind Matron Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Marie Miller of Lind who died Monday at the Ritzville General hospital will be held from the Methodist church in Lind Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. W. H. Richey officiating. Interment will be in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. The Duncan-Haight Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Miller was born in Russia but has lived for 58 years in the United States, 50 years of which she spent in Lind. She is survived by her husband, John, at the home; three sons, A. R. Miller of Lind; A. L. of Seattle, and H. W. of Garfield; four daughters, Mrs. Violet Miller of Ritzville, Mrs. Robert Wright and Mrs. C. R. Neutz, both of Lind; and Mrs. Francis Grimm of Seattle; one sister, Mrs. G. B. Fast of Ritzville and two brothers, Carl and Jacob Eckhardt, both of Ritzville, and six grandchildren. Mrs. Miller was 64 years old. Vostral Rites Held Saturday Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 11, from the St. Joseph's Catholic church at Odessa for James Vostral, who passed away suddenly at his home in Odessa. Neighbors who had noticed a break in the regularity of his habits, investigated last Wednesdsay morning and found Mr. Vostral lying dead on the floor. Death had apparently come during the late evening Tuesday. Born in Czechoslovakia May 15, 1867, Mr. Vostral came to the United States 68 years ago and for many years operated a ranch 18 miles southeast of Odessa, retiring to live in town about 10 years ago. Survivors include a son, Rudolph of Ritzville; a daughter, Mrs. Louis Kremsreiter, Odessa; three sisters, Mrs. Katie Wilcox, Medical Lake, Mrs. S. J. Williams, Ritzville, and Mrs. Emma Aherin, Odessa. He also leaves two brothers, Joe Vostral of Ritzville and Frank of Scappoose, Ore. His wife preceded him in death some time ago. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 23, 1947 Pioneer Will Be Laid To Rest Friday Henry Meyer, 87, Passed Away At Home Tuesday Eve Funeral services for Henry Meyer, retired farmer, who died at his home here Tuesday evening, will be held from the Philadelphia Congregational church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. R. Kirschenmann officiating. Burial will be in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery with the Duncan-Haight Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Meyer was born in Kolb, Russia, July 31, 1860. He came to the United States in 1892 and has lived in this community for 54 years. He was 87 years, 2 months and 20 days old. He is survived by his wife, Mary B., at the home; three sons, George of Coulee City, Mike of Spokane, and Benjamin of Pleasanton, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. E. L. Starring and Mrs. Jared Harris, both of this city; two brothers, Conrad of Toppenish and Alex of Greeley, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Conrad Benzel of Scottsbluff, Neb., and three grandchildren. He was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church of this city. Death Calls Henry Kiehn Monday Nite Stores Close For Funeral Of Sixty Year Resident Funeral services for Henry Kiehn, who died at his home Monday evening afer a lingering illness, were held from the Zion Congregational church at 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon with the Rev. P. Ruder and Rev. Raymond F. Griffith officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. The Duncan-Haight Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Kiehn was 69 years, 8 months and 6 days old. In honor of Mr. Kiehn's life-long association with the business life of Ritzville, stores were closed during the hours of the funeral today. Mr. Kiehn was born Feb. 14, 1878, in Kolb, Russia, and came to the United States when only an infant. He has been in the community for 60 years. For about 45 years he has been in the grocery business, 8 of which were with the Ritzville Trading Co. and the remainder in his own store. He is survived by his wife, Alice, at the home; three sons, Edwin F., Aaron A., and Everett H.; one daughter, Mrs. Elma Swank of Coeur d'Alene, Ida., and seven grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers included Henry Amen, J. J. Schoessler, Victor Donis, W. A. Pearce, L. D. Emerson, David Hoefel, Henry Thom, Fred Luiten, Albert Ott, Emil Wellsandt and Herman Krueger. Active pallbearers were William Schaefer, Mike Thiel, Henry Schoessler, Henry Danekas, C. A. Schwerin and George Freese. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 30, 1947 Pioneer Is Called After Brief Illness Funeral Monday For John Reich; 45-Year Resident Funeral services for John Reich of Ralston, who died in the Ritzville General hospital Friday following a brief illness were held from the Philadelphia Congregational church in Ritzville Monday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. R. Kirschenmann officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery and the arrangements were in charge of the Duncan-Haight Funeral home. Mr. Reich was born in Russia July 13, 1899, and was 48. He has been in the United States for the past 45 years, all of the time in this community. He is survived by his wife, Alto, two sons, Johnnie and Dale, and one daughter, Louise, all at the home; three sisters, Mrs. John Lobe of Sprague, Mrs. John Knodel of Hillsboro, Ore., and Miss Edith Reich of Portland, Ore., one brother, Otto, also of Portland, Ore. Dr. Hopkins Dies At Washtucna Funeral services for Dr. E. Howard Hopkins of Washtucna who died Sunday at his home were held at 11 o'clock today from the Community church in Washtucna with the Rev. A. K. Walborn officiating. Graveside services were held at three o'clock at Greenwood cemetery in Spokane where interment was made. Dr. Hopkins was born in Minnesota, June 6, 1876. He practiced medicine in Opportunity and Hillyard before coming to Washtucna where he has been for a number of years. He was a member of the Washtucna Community church. He is survived by his wife, Nina, at the home, one daughter, Mrs. Helen Preszler, of Aberdeen; four sons, Dwight G. of Opportunity, Jack W. of Seattle, Milton H. of Dallas, Texas, and Laird W. Of Aberdeen; one brother, Earl A. Carr of Spokane; two sisters, Mrs. Nita McMaster of Seattle and Mrs. Myrtle E.Cain of Olympia, and six grandchildren. Gering Funeral Held Wednesdsay Funeral services for Mrs. Jacob Gering were held in the Menno Mennonite church of Lind at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Willard Wiebe officiating. Arrangements in charge of the Duncan-Haight Funeral home. Burial in the Menno cemetery near Schragg. Catherine Schragg was born Nov. 29, 1885, in Marion, S. Dak., and was married Feb. 22, 1906, to Jacob Gering. She spent 11 years in Oregon and came here in 1900. She had lived for 42 years near Ritzville and for the past four years in Spokane. She was a member of the Menno Mennonite church of Lind and was 61 years old at the time of her death, which occurred Sunday in a Spokane hospital. She is survived by her husband, Jacob, at the home; one daughter, Mrs. Emma Aeschliman of Spokane; three brothers, Henry Schragg of Soap Lake, Ewald and Joe, both of Monroe; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Gering of Soap Lake, Mrs. Carrie (E.A.) Schragg of Ritzville, Mrs. Caroline Kaufman of Freeman, S. Dak., and Mrs. Annie Ries of Marion, S. Dak.; and one granddaughter. Infant Dies Simple funeral services for George Randall, 16-day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Goodno who died Oct. 23 were held in the chapel of the Duncan-Haight Funeral home Sunday at 2:30 with the Rev. Raymond F. Griffith officiating. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 6, 1947 Pioneer Laid To Rest At Sunday Rites Peter Rogel, Who Came Here In '07 Passes Oct. 29th Funeral services for Peter Rogel, who died at his home here Oct. 29th after a lingering illness, were held from the Lutheran church at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were Vic Donis, Paul Teske, Con Pfenning, Karl Pfenning, Richard Dehnel and Jacob B. Wagner. Mr. Rogel was born Dec. 14, 1879, in Kolb, Russia. On Feb. 6, 1907, he was married to Marie Katherine Benzel and in June of that year they came to the United States, settling here. He opened a shoe shop and continued to work at the cobbler's trade until his illness prevented. He is survived by three sons, Victor and Rudolph of this city, and Edward of Ellensburg; two daughters, Mrs. Milda Pfann of Richland and Mrs. Orlinda Luiten of this city; one brother, George, and two sisters, Miss Mary Rogel and Mrs. Henry Adler, all of this city, and eight grandchildren. Services were in charge of the Duncan-Haight Funeral home. Former Resident Buried In Spokane Funeral services for Aldy Johnson, a former resident of this city but late of Spokane, were held from the Hazen-Jaeger Funeral home in Spokane Saturday, Oct. 25. His parents arrived here about 1880 and left around 1895. His father built and operated what was known as the "Johnson House," later called the Palace Hotel which stood where the Ritzville State Bank stands. The hotel burned in 1903. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 13, 1947 Mrs. Olson Rites Held In Spokane Mrs. Almyra M. Olson, nee Ammons, died Sunday at a local rest home after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Gothic chapel of the Hazen-Jaeger funeral home in Spokane with the Duncan-Haight funeral home in charge. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery, Spokane. Mrs. Olson has lived in this community for 13 years. Her husband, Charles, preceded here in death in January 1946. She had been a member of the Methodist church since early girlhood, being a member of the Metzger Methodist church of Spokane. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. J.E.L. Olson of this city, two brothers, Rollin Ammons of Everett and John of Ritzville. Services Held For Former Resident In Spokane Nov. 1 Funeral services for Gotthilf Fischer, formerly of this city but late of Spokane, were held in that city Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. Burial was in Riverside Park. Mr. Fischer lived here for a number of years and was engaged in the butcher business. At one time he owned the building where the Ritzville Creamery, the Snow Hut and the Ritzville Cleaners are located, but he had sold them all. He was born in Germany. He is survived by his wife, Adeline, two sons, Eugene G. of Spokane and George A. of Tule Lake, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Edna Crispin of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren and three brothers in Germany. Rites For Mrs. Long Held In Harrington Funeral services for Mrs. Lee Long, a former residnet but late of Harrington, were held in that city Monday afternoon with the Duncan-Haight funeral home in charge. She is survived by two sons, Orville of Seattle, and Howard of Kennewick; two sisters, Mrs. Ames Bean of Spokane and Mrs. Bea Long of Walla Walla, and a brother, Fred Reihm of Chelan. Her husband died April 5 of this year and a son, Elwin, died June 20, 1947. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 20, 1947 Former Resident Dies LIND-Word was received here of the death of an old timer of this district, Charles Moody, at Vesalia, Calif., on Oct. 22, at the home of his son, Art Moody. Survivors include one son, Arthur; one brother, Earl and four grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November, 27, 1947 Rites Held Monday For Gary Anderson Funeral services for Gary Charles Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar J. Anderson of Odessa, were held from St. Agnes Catholic church at 10 Monday morning with Fr. C. M. Depiere officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Gary died Friday at the Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane following a brief illness. He was 3 years, 3 months and 1 day old, having been born Aug. 20, 1944. Pallbearers were Henry Vostral, Jr., Pat Thiel, Marvin Kiehn and Raymond Anderson. Timmie Kiehn was altar boy. Gary is survived by one sister, Janice, about 5 years old, his parents and his grandfather, Joe Vostral. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 4, 1947 Dog Maintains Lonely Guard By Master's Body Funeral services for John Eggars of Lind, whose faithful dog maintained a lonely vigil over his master's body lying in a wheat field, were held Monday with the Rev. W. H. Ritchey officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery. Mr. Eggars, who had farmed in the Lind area 30 years, was last seen in Lind about Nov. 14. His friends became increasingly worried over his absence and on Nov. 25 a group drove out to his farm, about eight miles south of Lind. They found the house open. The stove was turned on but the oil tank had run dry. Mr. Eggars' keys were in the dashboard of his car. As the friends searched through the farm buildings, they heard the mournful howl of a dog from a nearby field. The dog refused to answer their whistles, so they investigated. They found Mr. Eggars' body guarded by the weak, half-starved dog. Sheriff Frank Lucas and Coroner Edward Cross were summoned from Ritzville. The time of death was established at about Nov. 15- 10 days before the body was found. Authorities said Mr. Eggars apparently died of a stroke. Mr. Eggars, 57, was born in Nebraska April 24, 1890. He was unmarried. Survivors include two brothers, Herman of Lind, and Hans of Nez Perce, Idaho, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Edwards and Miss Ella Eggars, both of Los Angeles and Mrs. Amanda Schliefer of Lewiston, Idaho. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 11, 1947 Mrs. Reeder Rites Held In Spokane Funeral services fro Mrs. Ida May Reeder, 77, of Mead, Wash., were held Dec. 6 at the Alwin chapel of the Hazen and Jaeger funeral home in Spokane at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in Riverside Park. Mrs. Reeder, who moved to Mead several years ago, was a pioneer resident of the Washtucna community. She suffered a sudden heart attack Dec. 2. She is survived by two sons, W. Clyde Reeder of Mead and T. Wayne Reeder of San Bernardino, Calif.; one grandson, two sisters, Mrs. J. K. McCatter of Hannibal, Mo., Mrs. Pearl Mink of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, J. W. Spencer of Phillips, Neb., J. T. Spencer of Hannibal, Mo. Wife Of Ex-Agent Here Dies In Idaho Word has been received of the death of Mrs. George Funke at Bonners Ferry last week. Funeral services were conducted in Bonners Ferry Sunday and in Coeur d'Alene Monday. Mrs. Funke will be remembered as the wife of the county agent stationed here until last August. She had been ill for some time. Henry Hinrichs Rites Are Held Funeral services for Henry Hinrichs, 82, last charter member of the Zion Congregational church, were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. P. Ruder officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mr. Hinrichs was born Jan. 26, 1865, in Germany and came to the United States in 1882. He had lived near Ritzville since 1887. He died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 3. Survivors include three brothers, Ricklief of Ritzville and two brothers in Germany, one sister in Germany; two sons, Edward of Ritzville, and Henry of Westlock, Alberta, Canada; and four daughters, Mrs. G. F. Weber of Ritzville, Miss Carrie Hinrichs at the home, Mrs. Anna Davidson, Kelso, and Mrs. George Hedlind, Springfield, Ore. Duncan-Haight Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 18, 1947 Mrs. Grace Town Is Buried On Thursday Mrs. Grace Town, former resident of Ritzville but more recently of Freewater, died on Tuesday of last week in a Portland, Ore., hospital and was buried in Walla Walla Thursday. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Evans, Mrs. Town was born and raised here. She is survived by five daughters and two sons. Her husband preceded here in death some years ago.
