He was one of the early settlers of Adams county. He moved to Spokane about five years ago. Mr. Ahern was 76 years old and was born in Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Spokane. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; three sons, Clifford and Orval of Ritzville and Ernest of Spokane; one daughter, Ruby Burroughs of Spokane, two brothers, Morris and Bill of Spokane; and two grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 13, 1949 John Hauschild, Adams Pioneer, Dies In Spokane Funeral services for John Christian Hauschild, 62, second son of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Hauschild who were pioneers of Adams county and the Ritzville area, were held at 10:30 Monday in Spokane with the Rev. Frank Van Dorn officiating. Interment was in Riverside Park. Mr. Hauschild was born Nov. 3, 1886, and died Jan. 6, 1949, in Spokane where he had been a resident for about 20 years. He was graduated from the Ritzville high school with the first class after the school became accredited. He is survived by his widow, Della; two sons, Paul and Oliver; one daughter, Mrs. Russell Alexander, and three grandchildren, all of Spokane; and two sisters, Mrs. A. F. Phillippay of Kahlotus and Mrs. G.S. Wallace of Santa Clara, Calif. Funeral Is Held For Kendrick Funeral services for Mr. E. B. Kendrick, 71, who died Jan. 6 in Ephrata where he had lived for several years, were held in Ephrata Saturday at 10:30. Mr. Kendrick was born in Sedgewick, Kans., and came west in 1913, settling first in Buhl, Ida., then in Spokane. Later he was manager of the Potlatch Lumber company yards in Ritzville for several years until failing health caused his retirement from business. R. Kirschenmann officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mr. Werttemberger was born in Kolb, Russia, Jan. 1, 1866, and came to America in 1892, settling on a homestead nine miles from Ritzville in the Packard area. Later he helped construct the Ritzville Trading company's building and a warehouse run by Kalkwarf and Clodius. He is survived by one daughter, Alma, at the home, four sons, Norman W., John (Tiny), and William of Ritzville, and Richard of Seattle; a brother, George of Walla Walla, and two grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 10, 1949 Rivinius Funeral Conducted Here Funeral services for Gottfried Rivinius, 67, who died Saturday morning while removing snow from the walks around the Zion Congregational church were held in the chapel of the Newman-Danekas Funeral home Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. P. Ruder officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Calvin Huber of Warden Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mr. Rivinius was born in Russia Feb. 24, 1882, and came to the United States in 1900. He homesteaded near Warden where he lived for 45 years, coming here about four years ago. He never married. He is survived by one brother, Johannes, of Calgary, Alberta, Can.; two nephews, Reuben John and Richard of Calgary; and five nieces, Mathilda Rivinius, Mrs. Emma Wenn, all of Calgary; Mary Brussenmier of Portland, Ore., and Pauline Rivinius of Vancouver, B. C. In his early days in this county he followed he rodeo as a bronco buster. Body Brought Here The body of Herbert Kauffman, 76, who died Jan. 30 at his home in Walla Walla, was brought here for interment Saturday. He was a former resident of this community and the son of J. M. Kauffman. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Oda McKay. The ashes of his son, Constant Kauffman, were interred here last April. Vostral Funeral Conducted Friday Rosary for Joseph Vostral, 79, who was found dead in his home Wednesday, was said in the chapel of the Duncan-Haight Funeral home Thursday evening and funeral services were held in St. Agnes Catholic church Friday morning with Fr. C. M. Depiere officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mr. Vostral was born in Bohemia May 20, 1870, and came to the United States in 1883. He had lived in the Ritzville area for 49 years. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by two sons, Henry of Ritzville, and Edward of Ralston; three daughters, Mrs. Agnes Kiehn, Mrs. Alice Anderson and Mrs. Oscar Anderson, all of Ritzville; one brother, Frank of Scapoose, Ore.; three sisters, Mrs. Katie Wilcox, Mrs. Anna Williams of Ritzville, and Mrs. Emma Ahern of Odessa. He was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic church. John Dirks Rites Held On Tuesday LIND - Funeral services for John Dirks, 53, of Lind, who died at his farm home Friday, were held in the Congregational church in Lind Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Edward Schmidt officiating. Interment was in the Lind cemetery with the Duncan-Haight Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Dirks was born in Russia March 18, 1896, and came to the United States in 1906. He had lived in the Lind area for 19 years. He was a member of the Congregational church of Lind and a veteran of World War I. He is survived by his wife, Emma, and three sons, Eldon, Clifford and Jerry, all at the home; five brothers, William of Moses Lake, Clyde of Portland, Ore., Jake of Lamont, Henry of Walla Walla, and Julius of Lind; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Parker of Tacoma, and Mrs. Henry Janzen of Blaine. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 17, 1949 Henry Melcher Dies After Wreck Monday Henry Melcher of Marlin, who was born in Ritzville, received fatal injuries Monday when his pickup was struck by a Great Northern train at a grade crossing in Marlin. Melcher died shortly after the accident in the office of a nearby grain elevator. After farming in the Odessa area he had moved to a ranch about 15 miles north of Marlin, where he lived with his wife and one child. His father, Henry Melcher, sr., resides in Ritzville. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 24, 1949 Ex-Benge Man Dies In Stockton Mr. George Honn, 77, formerly of Benge, died Feb. 12 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Wolfinger, of Stockton, Calif., following a rather long illness. Burial was in Stockton. His wife, Bertha Honn, preceded him in death Dec. 27, 1945. Mr. Honn was born July 8, 1871, in Shawnee, Kans., and came to Winona in 1898. In 1914, he moved to a farm near Benge where he lived for a good many years. He was a member of the Methodist church at Benge. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. James (Elsie) Clinesmith of Benge, Mrs. Lena Storment of Winona, Mrs. Gertrude Wolfinger and Mrs. Dorothy Shull, both of Stockton, Calif.; one son, Roland of Benge; one brother, Charles, of Winona; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Long of Walla Walla, and Mrs. Cora Bruihl of Ritzville and nine grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 3, 1949 Phillips Rites Are Conducted At Lind Church Funeral services for Mrs. Sara Ida Phillips, 73, of Lind were held in the Assembly of God church in Lind at two o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev. F. Jay officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery with the Duncan-Haight Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Phillips was born May 10, 1875, in Tennessee and came to the Lind community 48 years ago. She had been ill for some time in a hospital in Sprague. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Opal Olsen of Ione; four grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Watkins of Bend, Ore., and Mrs. Anna Ayers of Tennessee. Funeral Conducted for Mrs. Bridgegroom OTHELLO - Funeral services were held in Tacoma Wednesday for Mrs. Eleanor Bridegroom who died at her daughter's home of a heart attack Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Bridegroom had resided in Othello where he is employed as division lineman for the Milwaukee Road. Mrs. Bridegroom was visiting her daughter at the time of her death. Rutz, 58, who died suddenly at his home Saturday morning were held in the chapel of the Newman-Danekas Funeral home at 1:30 Monday afternoon. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Rev. Alfred M. Olson, pastor of the Assembly of God church, assisted by the Rev. L. R. Clevenger of Chewlah, officiated. Mr. Rutz was born in Napierville, Ill., on Feb. 24, 1891, and has lived in this area for 52 years. He was a farmer and stockman. He is survived by his wife, Emily, at the home; one son, Vernon, of Spokane; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Allen of Spokane, and Miss Lois Rutz of Seattle; three sisters, Mrs. Pete Ulstrop of Portland, Ore., and the Misses Agnes and Alma Rutz of Spokane. Charlton Of Lind Is Buried Monday Graveside services for John Henry Charlton, 64, of Lind, who died Saturday at the local hospital after a short illness, were held at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery at two o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev. Clifford Knight officiating. Duncan-Haight Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Charlton had lived in Lind for the past 27 years. He is survived by one brother, Tully C. Charlton, of Cheney, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Hutchinson of Kansas City, Mo. Last Services Conducted For Schwisow Boy Funeral services for Alan D. Schwisow, two and a half year old, who died Thursday following a brief illness were held in the Emanuel Lutheran church Saturday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery with the Duncan-Haight Funeral home in charge of arrangements. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schwisow; one brother, Paul; one sister, Dawn; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schwisow; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schwisow; and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Mary Martin. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 17, 1949 Funeral Is Held For Gaskill, 49 Funeral services for Mr. Laurence J. Gaskill, 44-year-old retired groceryman, were held at the Newman-Danekas Funeral home chapel at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. R. Gordon of Spokane officiating. Mr. Gaskill died at his home at 110 W. Sixth Thursday after an illness of about a year. Interment was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Born 10 miles south of Ritzville, he had lived in Spokane, then moved to California for 14 years before returning to Spokane. He and his wife and son had made their home with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Gaskill in Ritzville for the last year. Mr. Gaskill is survived by his widow, Elsie, a 12-year-old son, John, his mother, Mrs. Mae Venters, Stockton, Calif., two brothers, Frank Gaskill of Stockton and Horton Gaskill of Winchester, Ida., and a sister, Mrs. Laura Morgan, Stockton. Relative In east Dies - Word Here Word of the death last Saturday of her brother-in-law, Joe Faucher of New York City, was received here by Miss Carrie Schragg. Mr. Faucher, an employee of the U.S. Rubber company in New York, succumbed to a heart attack two weeks before his death. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery this Thursday. Mr. Faucher was a reserve officer in the United States Air Force. He is survived by his widow, one son, a recent graduate of Princeton, a daughter, a student at Middlebury College, Vt., his mother, Mrs. A. Faucher of Seattle, and other relatives. Mrs. Ida P. Rowe, Davenport, another sister-in-law, was in New York when Mr. Faucher died. His father, the late A. (Pete) Faucher, was postmaster in Ritzville several years ago. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 24, 1949 Kutschkau's Dad Dies After Burns Danny Kutschkau's father, Gus Kutschkau, died two days after he was seriously burned in a service station accident at Grand Island, Neb., Danny has informed his wife in Ritzville. The local Texaco dealer flew to Grand Rapids last week after he learned of the accident March 14. Mr. Kutschkau died March 16. According to a newspaper account from Grand Island, Neb., Mr. Kutschkau, 61, spilled some gasoline on himself while filling the tank of a car. After completing the servicing, he went into his station but came back seconds later enveloped in flames. It is believed, the account said, that an open-flame heating stove in the station ignited the gasoline on Mr. Kutschkau's trousers. Persons at the scene extinguished the flames by rolling him in the snow. The burns, which proved fatal, covered both legs entirely between the ankles and the groin, his back, the right side of his abdomen and part of his right hand. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 31, 1949 Funeral Held for Elliott, 49, Fatally Injured by Drills Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Menno for Sterling E. (Sam) Elliott, 49-year-old Ritzville farm worker who was fatally injured Saturday forenoon when he fell from his tractor under a moving drill. Elliott, who was employed on the Ernest Hardt ranch near Ritzville, was drilling wheat Saturday when apparently he either fainted or suffered a heart attack and toppled off the seat of the tractor. His body fell behind the tractor but was badly crushed by the drill. When Elliott failed to appear for his Saturday noon meal at his home on the old Jake Gering place, which Hardt operates under lease, Sterling, jr., a teen-age son, went to the field to look for his father and found him alive but badly battered by the drill. The victim was rushed to Ritzville General hospital by ambulance, and Saturday evening was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Spokane. He died about 9:15 a.m. Sunday. The funeral was held at the Emanuel Lutheran church at Menno with the Rev. Benjamin Schuldeisz officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery there with Duncan-Haight Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Born in 1898 in Missouri, Elliott had lived in the Ritzville area for seven years. He was a member of the Wenatchee IOOF lodge and the Lutheran church at Menno. He is survived by his wife, Helen, three sons, Sterling, Edward and James; a daughter, Mildred; his mother, Mrs. Mary Elliott of Keatsville, Mo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Tom Bell of Keatsville, and Mrs. W. W. Taylor of Twin Falls, Idaho. Peterson Rites Held In Lind Funeral services for Arvid Peterson, 44, of Tacoma were held at the Lutheran church in Lind at two o'clock Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Whitrock officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery with the Duncan-Haight Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Peterson was born in Butte, Mont., Aug. 1, 1904. At the age of two years, upon the death of his mother, he was taken to Finland where he lived with his grandmother until he was nine when he returned to the United States. At a later date he went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Erickson of Sandpoint, Idaho. On Sept. 5, 1931, he was married to Miss Helen Krehbiel in Lind. He worked at Fort George Wright and taught in a school of telegraphy. In May, 1944, he went to Tacoma where he was a telegrapher for the Northern Pacific railway. He died March 15 after a brief illness. He was a member of Spokane lodge number 34 F. & A. M. and the Shrine. He is survived by his widow, Helen.
