Rev. Klein officiated, assisted by the Rev. Arthur Dellabarre. Burial was in the Odessa cemetery. Mrs. Lobe, a resident of Wenatchee during recent times, was a grandmother of Melvin Lobe of Ritzville. Other survivors include three sons, David of Moses Lake, Emanuel of Wenatchee, and Arthur of Cashmere, and three daughters, Mrs. Alvina Brockmiller of Malaga, Mrs. Esther Ellis of Wenatchee and Mrs. Elsie Cox of Seattle. Also surviving were a brother, Jacob Greenwalt; a sister, Mrs. Katie Bassett of Chester, Mont., 26 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Theo Baumann Funeral Rites This Thursday Funeral services for Theo. Baumann, 52, longtime resident of the Ritzville area, were scheduled for 2 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. The Rev. Alfred Carter was to officiate. Burial was slated for the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Baumann died Monday in a Spokane hospital. He had been farming six miles south of town and was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Joanne B. Kauffman of Opportunity, and a brother, Emil R. Baumann of Lind. Funeral Conducted for Henry Lucy, 96 WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Henry Lucy, longtime Washtucna farmer, were held Wednesday in Walla Walla with the Rev. Harry Baird officiating. Burial was in the Mountain View cemetery at Walla Walla. Lucy, who died at the age of 96, was born Feb. 28, 1857, in St. Clair, Mo. He came west in 1887 to farm in Adams county and lived here until 1925 when he moved to Walla Walla. His wife died in 1940. His three surviving daughters include Mrs. Roy Rogers of Washtucna. Also surviving are a son, brother, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 8, 1953 Funeral Is Held for Henry Adler Funeral services for Henry Adler, 68, who died at his home here Friday, were held Monday afternoon at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Mr. Adler was born Nov. 18, 1884, in Kolb, Russia, and came to the United States 62 years ago. He had lived for the past 53 years in Ritzville where he was employed by the state highway department and the Pastime Sports Center before his retirement. He was survived by his widow, Elizabeth, at the home; one son, Victor, of Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. Laura Cuff of Spokane; two grandchildren, Mrs. Eunice Kenny of San Francisco and Carole Adler of Tacoma; two brothers, Pete Adler of Newport and Carl Urich of Ritzville; and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Miller of Ritzville, Mrs. Mary Ruth of Toppenish, and Mrs. Pauline Bastron of Walla Walla. Rites Conducted for Mrs. Bohlin WASHTUCNA - Word came of the death of Mrs. Oscar Bohlin, 36, the former Audrey Billings, Sept. 19, in Seattle, after an extended illness. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Billings, she was born Dec. 16, 1916, reared in Washtucna and graduated from the local high school. After the family moved to Seattle she had been employed for 11 years with the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. In addition to her widower, she is survived by two small sons, Gary and Brent, two sisters, Mrs. John Nunamaker, Spokane, and Mrs. G. E. Selle, Fargo, N. Dak.; and four brothers, C. B. Billings, Palouse, Wash., and Garfield, William, Thomas and Fred all of Seattle. Cremation burial was at Accacia Memorial Park, Seattle. Joseph Sitton Funeral Is Held WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Joseph Sitton, 19, of Vancouver, were scheduled to be held there Wednesday. The former Washtucna youth died Sunday as the result of injuries sustained the previous day when his car left a road and overturned. No other details were available. His grandmother, Mrs. B. M. Sitton, and an uncle, Virgil Sitton, both of Washtucna, left Saturday for Vancouver. He is survived by his widow and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Sitton, Vancouver, and other relatives. William Fode Funeral Rites are Conducted LIND - Funeral services for William Fode, 52, of Lind, were held Wednesday at the Lind Congregational church with the Rev. Edwin Huber officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery. Fode died at Leavenworth Saturday while traveling from Seattle to Lind. He had been employed by the Town of Lind. Surviving are the widow, Mary, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Marie Saxen of Kirkland and Evelyn Mae Fode of Lind; and four sons, Raymond W., Howard W., and Edwin D., all of Lind, and Donald, who is serving with the army in Japan. Also surviving were three brothers, Ted, John and Emil, all of Lind, and four sisters, Mrs. Fred Kramer of Ritzville, Mrs. Otto Floether of Odessa, and Mrs. Walter Roloff and Mrs. Lloyd Wertz, both of Olympia. Five grandchildren also survive. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Final Services Are Conducted for Henry Lucy WALLA WALLA - Funeral services for Henry Lucy, Adams county pioneer who died Sept. 28, were held Sept. 30 at DeWitt funeral home chapel here with the Rev. Harry R. Baird officiating. Burial was in Mountain View cemetery. Lucy was 96. Born Feb. 28, 1857, in St. Clair, Mo., Lucy came west in 1887 and farmed in Adams county until he moved to Walla Walla in 1925. He joined the Christian church at Washtucna in 1901 and had been a member for 52 years. His wife, Thula, preceded him in death in 1940. Survivors are three daughters, Miss Anna Lucy of Walla Walla, Mrs. Eugenia Clever of Chewelah, and Mrs. Ethel Rogers of Washtucna; one son, W. R. Lucy of Walla Walla; one brother, Mat Lucy of St. Louis, and seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Ross, 74, of Walla Walla, former farmer in the Washtucna area, were held in Walla Walla Tuesday with the Rev. A. K. Walborn, former Washtucna pastor officiating. Burial was in the Mountain View cemetery. Ross was born on Nov. 5, 1878, in Mt. Forest, Ontario, Canada. He had farmed near Washtucna for 32 years when he retired and moved to Walla Walla five years ago. He was a member of the Washtucna Community church and Rimrock grange. Survivors include the widow, Lulu, at the home; a son, Roderick Ross, of Washtucna, a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Bonnie) Johnson of Yakima; two sisters, Mrs. James H. McLean of Weston, Ore.; and Mrs. Jim Bradburn of Enterprise, Ore.; and five grandchildren. Babb Funeral Is Held Monday MOSCOW, Idaho - Funeral services for William L. Babb, former Washtucna resident, were conducted here Monday by the Rev. A. K. Walborn, former Washtucna pastor. Babb was born on Jan. 27, 1878, in Greensville, Tenn., and lived in Washington from 1903 to 1941. Survivors include the widow, Mary; eight sons, Lee of Colfax, Felix of Diamond, Andrew of Bremerton, Delno of Coulee City, Jake of Goldendale, William, Jr., and Donald of Southwick, Idaho, and Melvin with the army in France; and two daughters, Mrs. Helen Gill of Creston and Mrs. Phyllis Anderson of Lewiston. Also surviving are a brother, Robert, of Palouse, and 16 grandchildren. His sons acted as pallbearers. Archie Bursch officiating. Burial will be in the Lind cemetery. Taylor had farmed in the Lind area for 46 years. He was a member of the Assembly of God church. Survivors include the widow, Mabel, at the home; four sons, Allen F. of Salem, Ore., Billie of Seattle, George C. of Lind and James H., Jr., of Sunnyside, Calif.; three sisters and two brothers. Ex-Tucna Lady Dies In Seattle SEATTLE - Mrs. Harry Garrity, a charter member of the Washtucna grange and the Progressive club, died at her home in Seattle Oct. 16. Rosary was said on Oct. 18 in the chapel of the John Kalin funeral home. Requiem high mass was sung in the St. Francis church Oct. 19. Burial was in the Calvary cemetery. Mrs. Garrity was born in Janesville, Minn., in 1872. In 1914 Mr. and Mrs. Garrity left Murray, Utah, to settle on a wheat farm eight miles west of Washtucna. They moved to Seattle in 1944. Survivors include the husband, Harry, in Seattle; a daughter, MRs. C. P. Neher of Seattle; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral Friday for John Burns WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for John Frank Burns, 63, who died Tuesday night will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Washtucna Community church with the Rev. Russell Booher officiating. Burial will be in the Washtucna cemetery. Burns was born in Columbus, Kans. He came to the Washtucna area to farm in 1901. He was a member of Rimrock grange. Survivors include the widow, Sarah, at the home; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude McKenzie, both of Washtucna; two aunts, Mrs. Elizabeth McKissick of Opportunity and Mrs. Russell Berry of Glendora, Calif.; and two uncles, James Murphy of Washtucna and Bill Murphy of Hutchinson, Kans. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 5, 1953 Funeral Slated For James West, Early Resident of Hooper Area WASHTUCNA - Funeral services will be held Friday for another of Adams county's early-day pioneers, James F. West, 75, who died Wednesday morning in the Adams County Memorial hospital at Ritzville. The Rev. Russell Booher will officiate over the final rites at 10 a.m. Friday in the Washtucna Community church. Burial will be in the Washtucna cemetery. West and his sister, Mrs. John A. Gray of Washtucna, who survives him, were among the earliest residents of the Washtucna-Hooper area. With their mother, they arrived from Missouri in 1887 to live with an uncle, James Kennedy, pioneer Cow creek rancher who had settled in the area 11 years before. First local resident to visit the West family following their arrival at "Uncle Jim" Kennedy's were Mr. and Mrs. George Bassett. Bassett is generally considered "Washtucna's first settler." Another nearby neighbor was George Lucas, the first permanent white settler in Adams county. James F. West was one of a small group of men and youth who built the first schoolhouse, known as Burkhart school, in the area. He often helped haul provisions to the Kennedy ranch from Walla Walla, Colfax or Sprague. Occasionally they'd bring in a ton of flour at a time. When she was interviewed several years ago by Mrs. Maude Sellars of the Journal-Times, Mrs. Gray recalled how her brother set Ritzville's horse racing fans back on their seats one early Fourth of July. The Washtucna-Hooper community brought three fine race horses to Ritzville and all of them won their events - West riding one, a Milam another, and Mrs. Gray's husband, John A. Gray, a third. West was survived by the widow, Pearl, at the home; two sons, Charles and James, both of Portland; Mrs. Gray, his sister; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral Friday for John Burns at Church Here WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for John F. Burns, prominent Washtucnan, were held Friday afternoon at the Washtucna Community church with the Rev. Russell Booher officiating. Mrs. F. R. West, jr., and Mrs. Roderick Kinch sang, with Mrs. Frances Allert at the organ. Burial was in the local cemetery. Mr. Burns was born near Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 12, 1889, the son of Paul and Katherine Burns. He spent his early life on a farm until the spring of 1901 when his parents came west to settle on a farm near Washtucna. It was here that he met Miss Sarah E. Freeman and on Dec. 12, 1910, he married her. Survivors in addition to his widow, include a sister, Mrs. Gertrude McKenzie, Washtucna; two aunts, Mrs. Elizabeth McKissick, Opportunity, Wash.; and Mrs. Russell Berry of Glendora, Calif.; two uncles, James Murphy, Washtucna, and William Murphy, Hutchinson, Kansas; and two nephews, Paul and Robert McKenzie, Washtucna. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 12, 1953 James F. West Funeral Services Conducted Friday Morning WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for James F. West, 79, were held Friday morning in the Washtucna Community church with the Rev. Russell Booher officiating. James Franklin West was born in Clay County, Missouri, on Oct. 16, 1874, the son of Madison and Betty West. He came west in 1887 with his mother and sister and lived with his uncle, Jim Kennedy on Cow creek, attending grade school in Walla Walla. He was married on Nov. 28, 1900, to Pearl Mary Dempsey at the Jim Kennedy ranch. They lived in and around Washtucna all their married life and their children were all born in Adams county. In 1909 they moved into Washtucna where Mr. West operated a dray service. Later he was made custodian of the local school, a position he held for seven years. Mr. and Mrs. West have lived in the present West home since 1909, where in 1950, they observed their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. West had been at one time a member of the Oddfellows lodge, the Woodsmen and the Rebekahs, but was forced to drop out when the lodges became inactive locally. He is survived by his widow, Pearl, at the home; two sons, Portland, Ore.; one daughter, Portland; a sister, Mrs. John Gray, Washtucna; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 19, 1953 Alonzo Howard Funeral Service Conducted Here WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Alonzo T. (Ted) Howard, 48, were held Saturday afternoon at the Washtucna Community church with the Lee funeral home of Pasco in charge of arrangments. Mr. Howard died suddenly at his home Tuesday presumably from a heart attack. The Rev. Russell Booher officiated and Mrs. Frances Allert was organist. Burial was in the local cemetery. Alonzo Theodore Howard was born to John and Phoebe Howard near Quincy on Oct. 2, 1905. The family moved to a homestead south of Washtucna later that year. The deceased had farmed the home place and cared for his mother for many years. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Phoebe Howard, Spokane; two sisters, Mrs. Lily Pearson and Mrs. Althea Ferree both of Spokane; two brothers, C. Emmet Howard, Farmington, and Floyd Howard of Sunnyside; 10 nephews and one niece. Funeral Saturday for Schwarzwalter YAKIMA - Funeral services for Fred Schwarzwalter, who died here Wednesday morning, will be held in Yakima at 11:45 this Saturday. Schwarzwalter's surviving widow is the former Mrs. Simon Gust of Adams county. Funeral Conducted for Alpha Hessee WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Alpha Omeka Hessee of Spokane, former Washtucna resident and wife of Ernest Hessee, were held Wednesday afternoon at the chapel of Chimes of the Thornhill-Carey Funeral home, Spokane, with the Rev. S. A. Williams officiating. Burial was in the Pines cemetery, Opportunity. In addition to her widower, at the home, she is survived by one son, Jack Hessee, Spokane; two daughters, Mrs. Val Gwendolyn Waugh, Portland, Ore., (other daughter not listed), her father, Charles F. Younce, Spokane; one brother, Larkin C. Younce, Portland; three sisters, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Lenocker homesteaded about 24 miles west of Ritzville on land now owned by Jake Kagele, about 1900. Several Adams county pioneers attended the funeral rites. R. Kirschenmann officiated at the rites in Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Survivors include the husband, Arthur C., at the home; four sons, Joel of Ritzville, Harold of Bremerton, Gilbert of Quincy and Robert of Seattle; two sisters, Miss Ruth Thiel of Spokane and Mrs. Will Schafer of Ritzville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 17, 1953 Rites Conducted for Mrs. Stumpf this Thursday Funeral services for Christina Stumpf, 79, who had lived in the Adams county area 53 years were scheduled for 2 p.m. this Thursday at Zion Congregational church with the Rev. R. W. Rieger officiating. Burial was scheduled for Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Born in Russia on Sept. 25, 1874, Mrs. Stumpf came to the United States 55 years ago. She and her husband, George, who survives here, farmed in the Odessa area until retiring in Ritzville in 1937. She was a member of the Zion church. Other survivors were two sons, Mike and Fred, both of Odessa, and two grandchildren. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Blankenship Funeral Is Held Funeral services for Jenny Alice Blankenship, 72, who died Saturday in Adams County Memorial hospital were held Wednesday afternoon at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. Mrs. Blankenship, mother of Mrs. Elsie Womach and Joel Blankenship, both of Ritzville, had lived here the past two years. Also surviving were her husband, Parish, of Salem, Ore.; three other daughters, Mrs. Vada Beekee, of Edgerton, Wyo.; Mrs. Lila Patterson of Seattle, and Mrs. Helen Burnette of Anchorage, Alaska; two other sons, Gilbert of Salem, and Weldon of Hayward, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two brothers, Fred Clark of Texas and Joe Clark of Illinois also survive. Mrs. German, One of First Babies Born in Ritzville Region Funeral services were conducted last Wednesday for one of Adams county's early-day pioneers, Mrs. Katie German, 69, a life-long resident of this area. Mrs. German's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thiel, sr., were one of the 17 Russian-German families who traveled from Nebraska to Walla Walla in a historic covered wagon train. The group arrived in Ritzville in 1883 and scattered over the endless acres of bunchgrass to homestead. The Thiels took up their place about four miles from Ritzville, the farm now owned by Mike Thiel and farmed by his son, Lawrence, and there Katie was born on April 10, 1884. She was one of the very first white children born in the Ritzville area. The first, Nettie Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jared Harris, had been born only two years before, on April 23, 1882. In later years, Mrs. German several times received prizes awarded at Pioneer picnics to the oldest person who had been born in what later became Adams county. Mrs. German was married Dec. 9, 1902, on the same place she had been born to Arthur C. German, whose family had arrived from Michigan in 1898. The couple farmed there until about 1911 when they moved to another place 12 miles northwest of Ritzville, the farm operated today by one of their sons, Joel German. There the Arthur Germans farmed until they retired to Ritzville in 1928. Mrs. German was survived by her husband at the home, and four sons, Joel H. of Ritzville, Harold R. of Bremerton, Gilbert A. of Quincy, and P. Robert of Seattle. Nine grandchildren also survive as do two sisters, Miss Ruth Thiel of Spokane and Mrs. Will Schafer of Ritzville. The funeral was conducted at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. R. Kirschenmann officiating. Burial was in the Ritzille Memorial cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 24, 1953 Funeral Is Held for Mrs. Stelzer LIND - Funeral services for Sofia Stelzer, a 35-year resident of the Lind area, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion Congregational church in Lind with the Rev. Edwin Huber officiating. Burial was to be at the Lind cemetery. Mrs. Stelzer died Monday at the Adams County Memorial hospital. A native of Russia, she had been in the United States 51 years. She is survived by her husband, Jacob, at the home; three daughters, Mrs. George Hilzer of Ritzville; Mrs. Otto Lobe of Lind, and Mrs. Henry Jurgens of Cashmere; and five sons, Dan, Harry, Reinhold and Rudolph, all of Lind, and Adolph of Cheney. A sister, Mrs. Rose Bessler of North Dakota also survives. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Rites Conducted for Roloff, 60 WASHTUCNA - Word came to Mrs. Chris Hille of the death of her brother, Gustav A. Roloff, 60, Monday at St. Elizabeth's hospital of injuries received when he was hit by a car at Fair and Pacific avenues in Yakima. Funeral services were held in Shaw and Sons chapel at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Born in Russia, Roloff came to this country 56 years ago. He was a member of the Eagles lodge and the Teamsters Union, and of the Congregational church at Ralston.
