The Rev. R. Kirschenmann officiated. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Relatives here said Spokane law officials have become increasingly convinced foul play was invovled in Ferderer's death early last Sunday morning in his home on a small farm near Spokane. The relatives said Ferderer apparently was shot about 1 a.m. and a fire which destroyed his house evidently did not start until about 3 a.m. some two hours later. The body was found inside the house. It was reported Ferderer, 50, had visited his mother, Mrs. Franz Ferderer in Ritzville recently to tell her of his plans for the summer. He purchased some turkeys for his farming operation last Thursday and Friday, following his usual custom, paid his current bills. He was last seen by neighbors about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Relatives said as closely as Spokane officials can determine, about $300 in cash maybe missing from Ferderer's house. Ferderer was born June 25, 1903, in Zeeland, N. Dak., and came to Ritzville with his parents in 1920. He lived on the family farm here until 1944 when he moved to the Spokane area. His father died in 1943. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 24, 1954 Funerals Conducted Here for Victims of Air Crash Funeral services were held Monday for two young victims of Adams county's first fatal airplane crash since 1948. Final rites were conducted at 11 a.m. for Rollin Ray Richter, 30, passenger in the single-engine plane which crashed the previous Friday and at 2 p.m. for LeRoy Walter (Ebb) Arlt, 32-year-old pilot. Both services were held in the Danekas and Duncan funeral home parlors, and both young men were buried at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Graveside services were conducted by the C. J. Newland American Legion Post for Richter and by the Odessa VFW for Arlt. A 4-place Stinson Voyager owned and piloted by Arlt smacked into a sloping pasture about 150 yards from the John Hennings ranch home in the Carico Hills at approximately 11:15 a.m. Friday. Richter was killed instantly. Arlt died shortly after being rushed to Deaconess hospital in Spokane. John H. Vaughan, aviation safety agent in the civil aeronautics adminstration's Spokane district office, said Wednesday his investigation several hours after the crash disclosed no evidence of engine malfunction or structural failure of the aircraft. Vaughan said the engine apparently was developing power up to the point of impact. He declared he had no further public comment to make concerning the crash. It was Adams county's first fatal air wreck since Richard L. Kautz, pilot, and George H. Rehn, passenger, both local men, were killed when their Ryan primary trainer owned by the Lind Flying club, crashed near Paha June 17, 1948. The events leading up to last Friday's tragedy apparently included a chance meeting in Ritzville that morning between Arlt, a native of this area, and Richter, an Oklahoma native who came to Adams county this spring after he and his wife, the former Ann Hennings of Ritzville, had returned from Germany where Richter was stationed with the army. Richter received his discharge May 8 and with his wife and 2-year-old daughter, Linda Susanne, adopted in Germany, were staying with Mrs. Richter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hennings. Arlt was planning a flight for Friday morning and Richter, who had come to town to pick up some combine parts for John Hennings, Mrs. Richter's brother, accepted his offer for a ride. Arlt's airplane took off from the Ritzville airport and presently appeared over the John Hennings' ranch. According to John Hennings, who was working on his combine in the yard, the plane made two or three passes over the house. The roar of the engine faded into the distance then began growing louder again as the plane returned, apparently for another pass. Hennings heard a crash. He raced around his house and saw the airplane, a tangled mess of wreckage, laying on a sloping pasture about 150 yards north of his home. Hennings said he ran to the wreck, found gasoline spurting from the airplane and fearing a fire pulled out both bodies. Irvin Ziemer and Les Pfannekuchen, who farm in the area, were among the next to reach the scene. Mrs. Ziemer was forced to drive to the Pfannekuchen place to telephone Ritzville since the aircraft had broken through wires serving the immediate area. Arriving from town were Ralph Danekas with the Danekas and Duncan funeral home ambulance, Dr. Charles Smick, Deputy Sheriff Clint Rowe and assistant coroner Dick Whitmore. Arlt was rushed to Spokane by Dr. Smick driving the ambulance. But he died of a crushed chest and other injuries shortly after arriving. Richter was born April 25, 1924, in Oklahoma and had entered the army in September of 1939, at the age of 15. He served six years before receiving a discharge in October of 1945 to become a surveying lineman for West Texas Utilities at Abilene, Texas. Presumably with thoughts of an army career, Richter re-inlisted in June, 1948, and the following September was married to Ann Henings, whom he had met in California, in Reno, Nev. Richter was transferred to Germany in 1951 and his wife followed. They lived there for two years before returning to the United States last April. He received his discharge May 8 at Fort Lewis after nearly 12 years in the army and with his family had been living at the C. H. Hennings place while the couple planned their future. Richter also was survived by his father, William Richter; his mother, Hazel Chandler; and two sisters, Mrs. Jack Ritchey and Mrs. Ralph Wollard, all living in California. His funeral was conducted by the Rev. R. W. Rieger. Arlt was the son of Carl Arlt, longtime Adams county wheat farmer, and Mrs. Lydia Billesback of Odessa. Born Feb. 2, 1922, and graduated from Ritzville his school in 1941, Arlt had lived here all his life except for four years in the navy which included action in several major campaigns. Following the war Arlt took flying lessons and received his private license. Several years ago he purchased his red 4-place Stinson. At the time of the accident he had been working for Norkem of Ritzville. He owned farmland operated by Dave Schragg about six miles northwest of Ritzville. Arlt also was survived by two brothers, William of Lamont and Howard of Rosalia. His funeral service was conducted by the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt Funeral Conducted for Mrs. Grace Witt SPOKANE - Funeral services for Mrs. Grace Witt, mother of Mrs. Merle Johnston of Ritzville, were held here last week with burial in the Holy Cross cemetery. Mrs. Witt died June 12 at Sacred Heart hospital. Miss Vivian Witt, another daughter, came to Spokane for the funeral and is visiting at the Johnston residence. Funeral Is Held for Mrs. Shedd LIND - Funeral services for Harriet Melissa Shedd, 83, of Lind, who died June 16 were held last Saturday at the Lind Methodist church with the Rev. W. H. Ritchey officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery. Mrs. Shedd, born in Minnesota, had lived in the Lind area 45 years. She and her husband farmed near there for many years before retiring to town. Mrs. Shedd was a member of the Lind Rebekah lodge and the Lind Methodist church. Survivors include the husband, Charles Lincoln Shedd, at the home; a half-sister, Grace Bursh of Longbeach, Calif.; and a step-brother, Calvin Morton of Portland; and five cousins. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Funeral Conducted for Both Parents GLASGOW, Mont. - A double funeral was held here Monday for Mr. and Mrs. Chet Burroughs, parents of Lee Burroughs of Ritzville. Mrs. Florence Burroughs, Lee's step-mother, died last Friday and his father died later the same day without, however, knowing of Mrs. Burroughs' death a few hours before. Lee Burroughs had been in Glasgow since last week and was expected to return to Ritzville late this week.
