F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Kramer was born on Christmas Day - Dec. 25, 1875 - in Russia and had lived in the Ritzville area for 56 years. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lydia Billtesbach of Odessa, and Mrs. Ella Harms of Davenport; and six sons, Henry of Portland, Ore., Otto of Chewelah, Conrad of Ephrata, Martin of Odessa, Harold of Ewan and Victor of Ritzville. Also surviving were two brothers, Michael of Custor and John of Ferndale; a sister, Mrs. Katherine Kiehn of Ritzville; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 21, 1955 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 28, 1955 Funeral Held for Schafer WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Clarence G. Schafer, 54, of Washtucna, who died Sunday at a Colfax hospital, were held Wednesdsay morning at St. Agnes Catholic church with the Rev. C. M. Depiere officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Rosary had been spoken Tuesday evening in the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. Schafer was a member of Central lodge No. 202, F. & A.M. of Washtucna, the Washtucna Lions club and St. Agnes church. Survivors include the widow, Augusta; his mother, Anna Schafer; two sisters, Mrs. A.T. McCune of California and Mrs. Elmina Schaefer of Washtucna; and five brothers, Theodore of Seattle, Frank of Ralston, Lee of Dayton, Vernon of Washtucna and Bernard of Spangle. Funeral for Mrs. Johnston Held Tuesday in Spokane SPOKANE - Funeral services for Anna B. (Brownie) Johnston, 76, a resident of Ritzville for more than 50 years who died Saturday night in a Spokane hospital, were conducted Tuesday in St. John's Cathedral. Officiating was the Right Rev. Edward M. Cross, former Episcopal bishop of the Spokane missionary district and Archdeacon Rowland Hills. A large number of Ritzville residents attended the service. Mrs. Johnston was buried at Riverside Park cemetery near her husband, the late Dr. John Johnston, and the couple's two sons, both of whom died at the age of 36. Mrs. Johnston had been a member of the Ritzville library board for at least 30 years, according to friends, and was serving as chairman of the board at the time of her death. Extremely active in church work. Mrs. Johnston has been president of St. Mark's guild in Ritzville, superintendent of the church school, and president of the women's auxiliary of the Episcopal church missionary district of Spokane. Mrs. Johnston also was a former president of chapter AR of PEO, a member of Zenith chapter 55 of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Ritzville Woman's club. Mrs. Johnston, the former Anna Baldwin, was born March 11, 1878, in Philadelphia. She became a registered nurse and met Dr. Johnston, a native of Ireland, in a Philadelphia hospital. The two lived in Asbury Park, N.J., following their wedding trip to Ireland but came to Ritzville in the early 1900s. Here Dr. Johnston practiced until his death on Sept. 12, 1928. Mrs. Johnston is survived by a granddaughter, Miss Cicely Johnston, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary P. Johnston of Spokane, and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Baldwin of Philadelphia. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 5, 1955 Simpson Daughter Dies In Tacoma On Sunday TACOMA - Catherine Simpson, baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Simpson, former Ritzville residents, died Sunday morning after having been ill since she was born last August. The baby also was survived by a sister, Margaret Hazel, and a brother, Rickie. The Simpsons live in Tacoma. Funeral Set At Pendleton Mrs. Guy Hugeman of Pendleton, Ore., and mother of A. L. Crouse passed away Monday at the Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane after a lingering illness. Her husband, Guy Hugeman, son A. L. Crouse and grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Crouse were called to Spokane Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 6, at the Folsom funeral home at Pendleton. Mrs. Hugeman lived for many years on the farm John Crouse now owns. Franz Rites Are Thursday Funeral services for Leonard L. Franz, who died Tuesday, were scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the Menno Mennonite church with the Rev. Willard Wiebe officiating and burial in the Menno cemetery. A retired farmer, Franz had lived in this area 48 years. He was born Sept. 3, 1875, in South Dakota. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. R. W. Claassen of Lacrosse; four sons, Julius and Arthur of Lind, Robert of Ritzville, and Edward of California; a sister, Mrs. Cornelius Allert of Ritzville; three brothers, William of Toppenish, David of Auburn and Julius of Granger; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 12, 1955 Marie Bailie Funeral Held, Mesa Pioneer HATTON - Mary Jane Bailie died Sunday morning, May 1, at her home in Connell at the age of 94. Born in Carroll county, Ark., on July 26, 1860, she was married in Jenkins, Mo., Oct. 1, 1876, to Robert Bailie. The family moved to Michigan Prairie in 1903 where they lived for two years. Later they homesteaded about 12 miles from Mesa. Ranching in those days was real pioneering, with no fences and long distances to water which had to be hauled home. Sage brush was everywhere...which had to be grubbed out before the land would produce. Wild horses roamed the plains. The Bailies raised stock and farmed some too. Eleven children were born, ten of whom are living, growing up with the country, working and farming with their parents. In 1925 Mr. and Mrs. Bailie moved to North Bend where they lived until Mr. Bailie passed away in 1930 after 54 years of marriage. Mrs. Bailie then moved back to Connell to be near her three sons and a daughter still living there. She was a member of the Methodist church. Six sons and four daughters survive their mother. They are William of Connell, Samuel T. of LaGrande, Ore., Henry of Tacoma, Oscar (Si) and Leonard of Connell and Leon of Mesa. The daughters are Mrs. Isabelle Williams of Bellevue, Mrs. Melina Goodrich of Dishman, Mrs. Bertha Barnett of Tacoma, and Mrs. Mary Ann Matheny of Connell. Another daughter, Mrs. Ida Eden died earlier. Also surviving are 32 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were her six sons, with nine of her grandsons as honoray pallbearers. The Rev. Howard Buck officiated at the services in the Connell Methodist church. Interment was in the Connell cemetery beside her husband. John Dammel Funeral Held SNOHOMISH - Funeral services for John Dammel, 72, who died her Thursday, were conducted Monday in the Zion Lutheran church with the Rev. Paul H. Schaus officiating and burial in Monroe Memorial park. Born in Berlin, Russia, on Aug. 10, 1882, Dammel came to the United States in 1903 and lived from 1904 to 1932 in the Lind area. He was married in 1905 to the former Rosina Pflugrath, who survives. Dammel had lived in the Snohomish-Monroe area since 1932 and was a member of Zion Lutheran church. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Rose Law of Sultan and Mrs. Pauline Lundberg of Monroe; a son, Carl Dammel of Odessa; two sisters, Mrs. Magdalene Ullrich of Port Angeles and Mrs. Sophia Pflugrath of Wenatchee; and eight grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 19, 1955 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 26, 1955 Bastron Rites Held Tuesday TACOMA - Funeral services for Frederick Bastron, former Ritzville area resident who died Saturday, were held Tuesday at the Evangelical Congregational church here. Born in Frank, Russia, on Oct. 8, 1883, Bastron came to the United States in 1909 where he lived at Ritzville for many years. He was married Feb. 19, 1919, to the former Katherina Eckhardt. Bastron moved to Tacoma in April, 1923. Surviving were the widow at 2514 S. Ainsworth, Tacoma; and a granddaughter, Janet Dorn. John A. Wellsandt, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Wellsandt and Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Benzel attended the funeral of their brother-in-law and uncle. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 2, 1955 Funeral Held for Local Boy On Wednesday Funeral services for 9-year-old Raymond Elmer Kembel, victim of a tragic Memorial Day weekend accident near Ritzville, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. R. W. Rieger officiating. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery with Don Van Buren, Doug and Steve Thiel, Larry Kison, Ken Schafer and Ralph Leisle serving as pallbearers. Members of Raymond's Cub Scout troop were honorary bearers. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kembel, Raymond was fatally injured when he rode his bicycle out the Kembel farm lane into Highway 395 about one mile from Ritzville and was struck by a car driven by Evert S. Miller, 59, of Milton- Freewater, Ore. The accident occurred about 4:50 p.m. Sunday. The boy was rushed to the Adams County Memorial hospital and from there was taken to Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane where he died shortly after midnight. Raymond was born Oct. 21, 1945, in Tacoma and had lived in this area 8-1/2 years. He had just completed the fourth grade. He was also survived by a brother, Thom, a student at Central Washington college, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thom and Mrs. Henry Kembel. Sheriff Clint Rowe said no charges will be filed against Miller, the driver of the car. Funeral Set for Mrs. Schell Funeral services for Katherine Schell, 78, who died Tuesday at the Adams County Memorial hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with Pastor Paul Bartholomew officiating. Burial will be in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mrs. Schell was born Sept. 21, 1877. in Russia. She came to the United States 55 years ago and had lived in Ritzville for the past 15 years. Surviving was a daughter, Mrs. Lee Krehe of Ritzville, and six sons, Fred of Ritzville, John and Henry of Ruff, Rudolph of Othello, Albert of Ritzville and Dan of Moses Lake. Mrs. Schell was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist church. Joe Telecky Funeral Set for Saturday Funeral services for Joseph Telecky, 71, who died Wednesday at the Adams County Memorial hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Methodist church with the Rev. Alfred Carter officiating. Burial will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Telecky, who moved into town from a farm some years ago, was a member of Marcellus Grange and one of its most ardent boosters and workers. He was a leading supporter of the Marcellus Grange baseball team until the club folded several seasons ago. Telecky also was widely known as an expert carpenter, cabinet maker and woodworker. Born in Minnesota on Feb. 14, 1884, he had lived in the Ritzville area for 48 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Surviving were the widow, Nettie; two daughters, Mrs. Bernice Jansen and Mrs. Rosaline Longmeier, both of Lind; and three sons, Raymond, Stanford and Clifton, all of Ritzville. Also surviving were four sisters, Mrs. Frank Kubik of Ritzville, Mrs. Fannie Anderson of Portland, Mrs. Emilee Scrimsher of Seattle, and Mrs. Anne Biggs of Newport; six brothers, John and Frank of Ritzville, Charles of Sprague, Anton of Reardan, Emil of Waitsburg and Adolph of Silver Creek, Minn.; and 10 grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 9, 1955 Mrs. Donovan Is Buried Today Funeral services for Ann Mable Donovan, 64, who died Sunday at her home, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at Danekas and Duncan funeral home. Burial was made in the Mt. View cemetery in Walla Walla at three o'clock. Mrs. Donovan was born in New York, Jan. 25, 1891. She was a member of the American Legion auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Mike; three daughters, Mrs. Ella Mae McCarty of Spokane, Mrs. Paul Cushman of Council, Idaho, and Mrs. Kenneth Cook of Boise, Idaho; two sons, Frank Rogers of Ritzville and Walter Rogers of Trenton, N.J.; one brother, Edward T. McCown, of Spokane, and 13 grandchildren. Funeral Held June 4 for David Hedstrom SPOKANE - Funeral services were held June 4 for David H. Hedstrom. He was the husband of the former Lucille Koch, and brother-in-law to Floyd Koch. Other survivors are his son, Ronald David Hedstrom; his mother, Mrs. Hilma Hedstrom; a brother, Rudolph and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Bezier. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 16, 1955 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 23, 1955 Funeral Held for Gering, 71, On Wednesday EVERETT - Funeral services were held last Wednesday, June 22, for Joseph P. Gering, 71, longtime manager of the Schrag elevator for the Union Elevator and Warehouse company of Lind. Gering died June 12 in Everett after a short illness. Born in Freeman, S. Dak., on Feb. 8, 1884, Gering moved with his parents to Eugene, Ore., and there spent his youthhood. In Eugene he was baptized in and became a member of the Mennonite church. Gering moved to the Schrag area in 1900 and seven years later, on April 4, 1907, was married to Leona Schrag, daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Schrag. The Gerings lived in the Schrag area for 37 years where Gering served as manager of the Schrag elevator for 32 years. The couple moved to Everett 11 years ago. Survivors include the widow, Leona; two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Schrag of Ritzville and Mrs. J. C. Graber of Freeman, S. Dak., and five brothers, Jacob of Spokane, Frank of Colfax, Walter and Leon of Ritzville, and Clarence of Rapid City, S. Dak. Three sisters and two brothers had preceded Joseph Gering in death. One brother, A. P. Gering, died only three months earlier. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 30, 1955 Funeral Is Held for Mrs. McCollom SAN DIEGO - Funeral services were held here Saturday afternoon for Mrs. I. N. McCollom, who passed away at the home of her son, Ivan McCollom, in San Diego. Mrs. McCollom came here 25 years ago with her husband, who survives her, from Ritzville, Wash. Mrs. McCollom also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Olson, of McMinnville, Ore., and six grandchildren.
