Koch died March 20 and was buried four days later in Oroville. Born July 7, 1883, in Russia, Koch came to the United States with his parents who settled first in the Ritzville area and later moved to Lind. Koch attended the Lind schools. Surviving are four brothers, George of Lind, Henry and Jake of Prineville, Ore., and Fred of Buhl, Idaho; and two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Gipson of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Martha Murray of Chula Vista, Calif. Mrs. Murray and her daughter, Mrs. Cutler, attended the funeral services. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 12, 1956 McGrath Dies In Missouri On Saturday KANSAS CITY, Mo. - James Grattan McGrath died at his home here April 7. He was the son of the late Patrick and Matilda McGrath of Ritzville, Wash. McGrath was born in the house in Ritzville now occupied by Mrs. Della Lightel. His father came to Ritzville in 1881 and was a foreman when the Northern Pacific railroad was built between Spokane and Pasco. Patrick also was the owner of the building now known as the Star hotel. Mr. McGrath worked for the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe between Kansas City and Denver as an electrical engineer for 20 years. He is survived by his widow, Nell; two daughters, Margaret and Helen of Kansas City; a son, Robert of Walnut Grove, Calif.; six grandchildren; three sisters, Anna Ratcliff of Newport, Wash., and Mrs. Margaret Sickmann and Mrs. helen Buehler, both of Ritzville; and one brother, Robert Emmett of California. Funeral Held For Johnston WASHTUCNA - Relatives of Wilford Johnston, Winton, Calif., received word of his death Thursday, April 5, from a heart attack, which followed an accident to his wife March 30. Mrs. Johnston (Susie) stood too close to a gas heater, causing her clothes to catch on fire burning her right side and body severely. She was taken to the hospital and treated for first degree burns. Mrs. Johnston was released from the hospital April 5 to her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Benton, with order to stay in bed for two months. Mr. Johnston's funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Apirl 10, in the Washtucna Community church. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery. Funeral Held For Johnston at Washtucna WASHTUCNA - Wilford Barry Johnston, 55, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Johnston, died April 5 at Merced, Calif. He was born May 29, 1900, at Curtis, Neb., and was married May 29, 1937, to Susie Benton at Washtucna. He is survived by his widow, Susie, and three step-children, Betty of Seattle, Katie Bond of Wichita, Kans., and Lloyd Benton of Winton, Calif. Besides his parents, he leaves six brothers, Wendall, Neil, Marshal and Roy of Washtucna, Newell of Hatton and Roy of Ritzville; five sisters, Hazel Pounds of Post Falls, Ida., Wilma Keoger of Vancouver, Illma Ruppert of Washtucna, Bulah McKnight of Prosser and Edra Dakin of Ketchikan, Alaska. Funeral services were held in the Washtucna Community church with the Rev. A. K. Walborn of Wallace, Ida., officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville cemetery with Masonic services. Mrs. Schafer Funeral Held Last Monday SPOKANE - Funeral services for Mabel Schafer were held Monday at the First Assembly of God church here with graveside services at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mrs. Schafer, who died April 4 at Deaconness hospital, was born Jan. 29, 1886, in Russia and came to the United States at the age of about 12. She was married Nov. 10, 1904, to Conrad Schafer in Ritzville and lived most of her life in the Ritzville area until moving to Spokane a few years ago. She was survived by her husband, Conrad Schafer at the home; six daughters, Mrs. Helen Brennan of Zenith, Mrs. Ruth Charrier of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Dorothy Dillman of Colville, Mrs. Lucile Werttemberger of Spokane, Mrs. Violet Kembel of Ritzville, and Mrs. June Reems of Seattle. Also six sons, Roy of Ritzville, Arthur of Cheney, Albert of South Williamsport, Penn., Richard, Virgil and Merle, all of Spokane; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Reinhart Kanzler of Olympia, Mrs. Emil Selcho of Ritzville, and Mrs. Conrad Rehn of Rupert, Idaho. Also three brothers, Jake Bauer of Tacoma, George Bauer of Yakima and Carl Bauer of Olympia. She was a member of the First Assembly of God church. Jacob Stelzer Funeral Held LIND - Funeral services for Jacob Stelzer, 83, who died Tuesday, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. Ruben Meyer officiating. Burial was to be in the Lind cemetery. Stelzer was survived by three daughters, Mrs. George Hilzer of Ritzville, Mrs. Otto Lobe of Lind and Mrs. Henry Jurgens of Cashmere; five sons, Dan, Henry, Reinhold and Rudolph, all of Lind, and Adolph of Cheney; a sister in Germany; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral Held for Adam Miller Funeral services for Adam J. Miller, 68, longtime farmer in this area are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. R. W. Reiger officiating. Burial will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Born in Kolb, Russia, Miller came to the United States at the age of four and had lived here the past 64 years. Surviving were the widow, Adele; two sons, Calvin and Clifford; a sister, Mrs. John Rosenoff; and four grandsons. Graveside Services Conducted for Nida Graveside services for Arlie Nida, 76, who died in Pullman April 3, were held at Ritzville Memorial cemetery Monday with the Rev. Alfred Carter officiating. Nida had lived in Ritzville a few years ago with one of his sons, Clyde, now a resident of Grandview. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 19, 1956 Funeral Set for Mrs. Wahl LIND - Funeral services for Katherine Wahl, 80, of Lind who died Monday in the Adams County memorial hospital will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lind Congregational church with the Rev. Ruben Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Lind cemetery. Born in Russia Aug. 11, 1875, Mrs. Wahl had lived in the Lind area for 45 years. She was a member of the Congregational church. Surviving were her husband, Gottlieb; two daughters, Mrs. Martha Sackmann and Mrs. Elsie Sackmann, both of Lind; four sons, William of Ritzville, Reinhold of Newberg, Ore., Otto of Opportunity and Emil of Lind; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters and three brothers. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 26, 1956 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 3, 1956 Julius Franz Funeral Set for Friday LIND - Funeral services for Julius Albert Franz, 56, who died Wednesdsay at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Menno Mennonite church with the Rev. Lester Janzen officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Mennonite cemetery. Franz was born in South Dakota but had lived in the Lind area for the past 54 years. He was a member of the Menno Mennonite church. Surviving are his widow, Agatha; six daughters, Lois and Judy at the home, Mrs. Marie Ewert of Marios, S. Dak., Mrs. Clara Reimer of Lind, Mrs. Lucille Harms of Kansas City, Kans., and Mrs. Viola Boese of Bellingham; and two sons, Henry and Leonard, both of Lind. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Othielia Claassen of Lacrosse; three brothers, Edward of Santa Monica, Calif., and Arthur and Robert, both of Lind; and seven grandchildren. Danekas and Duncan funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 10, 1956 Mrs. Winsky Funeral Held Funeral services for Mrs. Phillipina P. Winsky, 79, who died in the local hospital Saturday, will be held at the Spring Valley Menno church in Newport, Wash., Tuesday. The Rev. R. Schmidt officiated at the services. Interment was in the Spring Valley cemetery. Mrs. Winsky had lived in Ritzville the last year and a half, coming here from her home in Coeur d'Alene. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Walter Gering (Milletta) of Ritzville, Mrs. Ella Willis of Richland, and Mrs. Claudia Norlin of Coeur d'Alene; a son, William Winsky of Ritzville; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Other survivors include four sisters and a brother. Lloyd Damewood Services are Held Graveside services for Lloyd Damewood, 34, Battleground, Wash., were conducted at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery by members of the C. J. Newland post of the American Legion last Thursday. A former Ritzville resident and veteran of World War II, Damewood died suddenly at Long Beach, Wash. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, at the home; a son, Thomas, at home; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Damewood of Spokane. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 17, 1956 James Stone Funeral Held SPRAGUE - Funeral services were held May 2 at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home in Ritzville for James Raymond Stone. Stone was born in September, 1879, at Runels, Texas, and had lived in this community for nearly 50 years, farming in the Sprague and Tyler districts. He had made his home since 1952 with Mr. and Mrs. Hurley Griffith. Surviving are two sons, Robert and Howard Stone of Spokane, and one adopted son, Jerry Stone of Spokane; one nephew, Albert W. Koehler of San Francisco; and one niece, Mrs. Daisy McCully of Upland, Calif. The Rev. R. W. Reiger officated at the services with burial in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Funeral Set for Johnson PULLMAN - Funeral services for Arthur J. Johnson of San Leandro, Calif., former Washtucna resident, will be held here Saturday. Johnson, 74, died Monday in San Leandro. From 1918 to 1924 he lived in Washtucna where he was employed at the L. L. Bassett hardware. Later he joined soil conservation services, receiving a Presidential citation for his wartime agricultural engineering developments. Surviving are the widow, Mabel, in San Leandro, and four children, Edwin and Mrs. Harold Givens of Pullman, Mrs. Robert Morris of San Leandro, and Randall, who is advertising manager for the Washington Water Power company in Spokane. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 24, 1956 Funeral Held For Mrs. Bauer Last Tuesday Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bauer, who died at her home Friday, were held Tuesday at the Philadelphia Congregational church with the Rev. R. W. Reiger officiating. Mrs. Bauer was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church. She was survived by her husband, Peter, at the home; five daughters, Lydia Montgomery of Laurel, Mont., Mrs. Martha Burkle of Billings, Mont., Mrs. Martha Mitchell of Ney, Mont., (both listed as Martha), Mrs. Mollie Harding and Mrs. Mary Arnst, both of Kennewick; five sons, Solly Schoesler of Laurel, Mont., Jake Schoesler and Herman Schoesler of Billings, Mont., Art Schoesler of North Hollywood, Calif., and Dan Schoesler of Othello. Also surviving were five stepdaughters, Mrs. Susie Thom, Mrs. Ercil Cox of Tacoma, Mrs. Joel Kenny and Cora Howe, both of Seattle, and Mrs. Bill Ramsey of Honolulu and two step-sons, Lavine Bauer of Stockton, Calif., and William Bauer. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery with Danekas and Duncan funeral home in charge of arrangements. Gottlieb Wahl Funeral Held This Week LIND - Funeral services were held Tuesday for Gottlieb Wahl, 84, who died Saturday morning at the Adams County Memorial hospital following a short illness. Services were held at the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. Ruben Maier officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery. Wahl was born in Hoffningstall, Rumania, May 28, 1871, the son of Johann and Christina Wahl. He was married to Katherina Laib Nov. 27, 1897, and came to the United States in 1911, first to Boudle, S. Dak., and later the same year to Lind where he engaged in farming until his retirement 20 years ago. He was a member of the Zion Congregational church. Surviving were four sons, William G. Wahl of Ritzville, Reinhold Wahl of Newberg, Ore., Otto Wahl of Opportunity and Emil Wahl of Lind; two daughters, Martha Sackmann and Elsie Sackmann, both of Lind; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wahl preceded her husband in death April 16. Mrs. Wellsandt Rites Conducted on Wednesday Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Anna Louise Wellsandt, 68, who died at her home Saturday, were held Wednesday afternoon at Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Mrs. Wellsandt was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church and had lived in the Ritzville area 44 years. She was survived by her husband, William F., at the home; three daughters, Mrs. Alvin Maier and Mrs. Lawrence Maier, both of Ritzville, and Mrs. Richard Wiesner of Seattle; three sons, Harold and Gerald of Spokane, Floyd W. of Missoula, Mont.; one brother, Arthur Windelchafer of Cleveland, Minn., and 16 grandchildren. R. Kirschenmann officiating and burial in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Born Aug. 24, 1885, in Russia, Mrs. Benzel had lived in the United States 45 years and the Ritzville area 21 years. She was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church. Surviving were her husband, John F.; a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Schaffer of Sheridan, Wyo.; three sons, Alex Weitzel of Riverton, Wyo., Henry Weitzel of Eastern State hospital and Benny Weitzel of Ritzville; a sister, Mrs. Carl Haase of Nebraska. Also two step-daughters, Mrs. Nick Schafer and Mrs. Elmer Heimbigner, both of Ritzville; five step-sons, Fred Benzel, jr., of Ritzville, Carl of Harrington, Jake and Alex of Scotts Bluff, Neb., and Rheiny of Seattle; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Alfred Carter and the Masonic lodge conducting the rites. Cremation followed. Brittin had lived here nine years. Surviving were the widow, Rena, and two daughters, Miss Anna Brittin of Chicago, and Mrs. Wilma Murphy of Portland, Ore. R. W. Rieger officiating. Burial will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J. D. Haase, and three sons, Walter E. Timm of Portland, Layton Timm of Palm Beach City, Fla., and Bob Timm; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Timm died last Tuesday.
