Mr. Kelso had been in very poor health the last six years. Born in Altamont, Davis county, Missouri, on Aug. 10, 1877, "Jack" was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kelso. At the age of 23, he came to Washington, arriving in Hatton on March 4, 1901. On Oct. 2, 1907, he was united in marriage to Margaret E. (Gertie) Watson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Watson of the Sandhills community for several years. Mr. Kelso was a well driller and drilled many of the wells in this vicinity. Later they moved to Kennewick where they farmed for about 20 years, having to sell when the Hanford project started. Mr. Kelso is survived by his wife, Gertie, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Darrell (Grace) Williams of Moses Lake, Mrs. Roy (Cora) Arbogast of White Salmon; one son, Gene Kelso of Spokane; four grandchildren, Ida Mae and Arena Kelso of Spokane, Marion Smith of White Salmon and Dennis Williams of Moses Lake. Three sisters, Mrs. A. T. (Leona) Watson of Lind, Mrs. Ora Crutchfield of Kennewick, and Mrs. Carrie Hartwig of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Roy Kelso of Lind, and Carl Kelso of Walla Walla; and many nieces and nephews. Rev. Kenneth Underwood was in charge of the services and burial was at Desser Lawn cemetery in Kennewick. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 19, 1956 Greenwalt Funeral Held on Monday PALOUSE - Funeral services for Mrs. Carolina Greenwalt, 75, who died at the Finch Memorial hospital in Pullman Friday morning, were held in Moscow, Ida., July 16. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial cemetery at Moscow. Mrs. Greenwalt was born April 7, 1881, in Paulstal, South Russia. She was united in marriage to Jacob Greenwalt May 12, 1904, at Menno. He preceded her in death March 19, 1956. They farmed in the Menno area until 1937 when they retired to a smaller place near Palouse. She is survived by four sons, Jacob and Chris of Odessa, Henry of Tekoa, and Herman of Palouse; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Hardt of Spokane, and Mrs. Jonathan Gering of Moscow, Idaho. Also two sisters, Mrs. Barbara Ottmar of Odessa and Mrs. Adam Troutman of Yakima; two brothers, Chris Hockstatter of Yakima and George Hockstatter of Moses Lake. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 26, 1956 Mike Burroughs Funeral Service Held Thursday Funeral services for six-year-old Michael Ray Burroughs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Burroughs, were scheduled for this Thursday afternoon at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. Alfred Carter of Trinity Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Michael died Monday at his home. Also surviving are two brothers, Jimmy of Montana and Russell at the home; a sister, Patricia, of Ritzville; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Clifton of Ingomar, Mont. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 2, 1956 Funeral Service Held Monday for Mrs. John Gray, Pioneer WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Mrs. John A. Gray, 89, one of Adams county's best known pioneers, were held Monday at her home in Washtucna with the Rev. Paul Bartholomew of Clarkston, a former Ritzville pastor, officiating. The services consisted only of Scripture readings and prayers, as Mrs. Gray had desired. Graveside rites were conducted at the Washtucna cemetery. Mrs. Gray, the former Mattie Lee West, was born in Clay county, Missouri, Aug. 13, 1866. She came west with her mother and brother when she was 17 and lived during early pioneer days in the Hooper-Washtucna area. She was married in 1888 to John A. Gray. Theymoved from Cow creek to Washtucna where they operated a boarding house for many years. Mr. Gray died March 11, 1917, and Mrs. Gray died Friday at her home. She was survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Pearl West of Portland, Ore.,; two nephews and a niece in Portland and a niece in Montana. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 9, 1956 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 23, 1956 Hille Funeral Wednesday at Washtucna Funeral services for Christian Hille, 63, were held Wednesdsay at 2 p.m. in the Washtucna Community church with the Rev. Russell Booher officiating. Interment was made in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mr. Hille passed away quietly in his sleep Monday, Aug. 20, at his home in Washtucna. He was born Sept. 5, 1892. He is survived by his widow, Jennie, at the home; three daughters, Mrs. Irene Burkhart of Spokane, Mrs. Marian McPeek of Richland, and Mrs. Ruby Desposadt of Bremerton; two sons, Alvin and Eugene of Washtucna; one sister, Mrs. Carolina Sackmann of Ritzville; and three brothers, Dan and John of Ritzville and Manuel of Walla Walla and nine grandchildren. Mr. Hille was a member of the BPOE in Colfax, the Washtucna grange and the Washtucna Community church. Funeral Rites for Mrs. Parkes Held Recently HATTON - Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the First Christian church in Hoquiam for Mrs. Percy Parkes, who passed away in the hospital at Aberdeen Aug. 19, from a heart condition and complications. Mrs. Parkes, nee Lulu Williams, daughter of Jack and Hattie Wiliams, both deceased, was born at the family home at Delight (now Sandhills) on April 24, 1895. She attended school at Delight and Five Mile Prairie, graduating from North Central high school and also the Cheney Normal. She taught school at Sandhills (several of her pupils still residing here) then at Aberdeen. Lulu and Percy Parkes were united in marriage at Aberdeen on April 24, 1925, and made their home in Hoquiam. She was a member of the First Christian church and ladies auxiliary of the Elks. Mrs. Parkes is survived by her husband, Percy, at the home; one sister, Mrs. L. W. (Elva) Swannack of Sprague; two brothers, Bryan F. Williams of Spokane and Norman J. Williams of Hatton; and several nieces and nephews. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 30, 1956 Tucna Folks Attend Rites WASHTUCNA - Going from Washtucna Saturday to Weston and Walla Walla to attend the funeral services of Mrs. James McLean were Mr. and Mrs. James E. Murphy, sr., Mr. and Mrs. James E. Murphy, jr., Mr. and Mrs. Roy M. Gillis, Mrs. Ethel Gillis, Mrs. Nettie Sitton, Mrs. Sarah Burns and Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Ross. Mrs. James (Edna) McLean was a former resident of Washtucna, coming as a bride to live with her husband on the ranch now owned by James E. Murphy, jr. The McLeans with their four children moved to Westin, Ore., in 1932. Mrs. McLean was born in 1893. She was survived by her husband at the home in Westin, and her four children, Dale and Gale (twins), Helen and Jimmy and several grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 6, 1956 Mrs. Thiel Dies At Daughter's Spokane Home Mrs. Maude A. Thiel, Adams county treasurer for 20 years died Wednesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Miller, in Spokane. Funeral services probably will be held in Ritzville, though the date has not been set. Mrs. Thiel resigned as county treasurer Sept. 1, 1954, after holding the post since 1942. Previously she had served eight years as Adams county school superintendent. Mrs. Thiel was secretary of the Ritzville chamber of commerce from 1942 until 1954 and served as first president of the local business and professional women's club. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 13, 1956 Funeral Held For Mrs. Thiel Funeral services for Maude A. Thiel, 74, former Adams county school superintendent and treasurer who died Sept. 5, were held Saturday at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home with the Rev. Alfred Carter officiating. Burial was at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mrs. Thiel was survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth P. Miller of Spokane; two sons, James of New York City and Max of Medical Lake; three sisters, Mrs. Ernest Oldham and Mrs. Addy Dawson, both of Hood River, Ore., and Mrs. Harlan Roper of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Everett Johnson of Oakland, Calif.; two other sisters and another brother living in Missouri; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Thiel, a longtime secretary of the Ritzville chamber of commerce, was a member of Trinity Methodist church and Zenith chapter, Order of Eastern Star. The OES conducted graveside rituals. Mother's Death Calls Couple Judge and Mrs. George Freese were called to Vancouver Wednesday by the death of Mrs. Freese's mother, Mrs. George Zocher. Mrs. Zocher, 84, was the widow of the late Rev. George Zocher. Surviving are five daughters, Florence Zocher at the home; Mrs. John Hinkel and Mrs. Harry Feuerstein, both of Portland, Mrs. D. I. Berger of Dubuque, Iowa, and Mrs. Freese. Also surviving are several grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 20, 1956 Funeral Friday for Joseph Tellian Graveside services for Joseph Tellian, 88, who died Thursday morning, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Born in Austria in 1868, Tellian had lived in Ritzville for the past 57 years. He was a retired laborer. Conducting the funeral will be the Rev. R. W. Rieger. Danekas and Duncan funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Walter Rites are Conducted Wednesday Funeral services for Conrad Walter, 85, one of Adams county's longtime wheat ranchers, were held Wednesday at the Zion Congregational church with the Rev. R. W. Rieger officing. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Walter died Monday at the local hospital. Born May 19, 1871, in Russia, he had lived in the United States 53 years and in the Ritzville area 45 years. Surviving were the widow, Anna Marie, at the home; eight daughters, Mrs. Fred Lenhart of Odessa, Mrs. Art Stueckle of Colfax, Mrs. Virgil L. Lind of Ellensburg, Mrs. Gene Koch of Wenatchee, Mrs. Don Pankow of Toppenish, and Mrs. George Ils, Mrs. Ervin Ziemer and Mrs. L. W. Koch, all of Ritzville. Also surviving were two sons, Henry of Marlin and Sam of Ritzville; 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. M. B. Reese Funeral Held OLYMPIA - Funeral services fo M. B. Reese, onetime Adams county engineer, were held here Sept. 12. Reese died the previous Monday in a local hospital. He had suffered from a heart ailment. Prior to serving as engineer, Reese farmed on the W. W. King ranch west of Ritzville. Leaving the eningeer's office in 1933, Reese and his wife operated the Close Inn apartments in Spokane until ill health forced him to retire. The couple moved from there Spokane valley home to Olympia in 1949. Surviving are the widow and four children, Mrs. Ralph (Helen) Holmes and Dr. Donald Reese, both of Portland; Mrs. Mark (Caro Ida) Richards of Olympia; and Goodrich Reese of Bellevue.
