F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Born in Jansen, Neb., Kinzel had lived in this area 61 years. Surviving are two daughters, Dolores and Florence Kinzel at the home; three sisters, Mrs. John (Mary) Heimbigner and Mrs. Henry (Kathie) Koch, both of Spokane, and Mrs. George (Anna) Bauer of Yakima, and two brothers, John Kinzel of Ritzville and Henry Kinzel of Cheney. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 11, 1956 Davis Funeral Funeral services for Albert Bradley Charles Davis of Lind, shot to death Thursday afternoon near the Providence hill road, were held Monday at the Lind Methodist church with the Rev. Ritchey officiating. Graveside rites at the Lind cemetery were conducted by the Lind Lodge F. & A. M. No. 145 and the Eugene D. Kirby American Legion post. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Davis had been born Jund 1, 1897, at Harrington, the son of Barbara and the late Charles Davis. He was raised in the Almira area and was married Aug. 13, 1918, to the former Oma Gilman. Three weeks later he was called into the service during World War I. In 1927 Mr. and Mrs. Davis and their two children moved to Lind where he operated a service station for 10 years. Then Davis took over the H. Earl Clack company bulk plant, and had operated it ever since. Davis known to hundreds of friends as "A.B.," was extremely active in civic affairs. He helped organize the Lind gun club and the Lind volunteer fire department. He served as fire marshal for several years. An ardent sportsman, Davis was a director in the Adams County Sportsman's association. He served at one time as commander of the American Legion post at Lind and was a member of the Lind Masonic lodge. Surviving are the widow, Oma; a sons, David; a daughter, Mrs. Ellen DeVore; and nine grandchildren all of Lind. Also surviving were his mother, Mrs. Harry Holmes of Republic; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Dodson, Mrs. Mary Laurie and Mrs. Helen Ritzchke of Republic; and six brothers, Tom of Anchorage, Alaska, John of Vancouver, Perry and Oliver of Republic, Harry of Goldendale, and Richard of Portland, Ore. Mrs. Conner Funeral Held LIND - Funeral services were held Thursday morning for Mrs. Emily Susan Conner, 90, who died at her home Oct. 8 at the Lind Methodist church with the Rev. W. H. Ritchey officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery. Born in Fort Steilacoom, Oct. 10, 1866, she came to Lind 54 years ago. Surviving were one daughter, Iren Seivers of Lind, and two sons, Joe Wheeler of Issaquah and William Conner of Lind. Also surviving were five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Thomas Rites Are Conducted at Washtucna WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Joseph Oliver Thomas were held in the Washtucna Community church Wednesday with the Rev. Russell O. Booher of Spokane officiating. Thomas was born in Urbana, Mo., Dec. 16, 1880, and died at the Adams County Memorial hospital Oct. 6 following a lingering illness. He migrated to Washington state in 1906 and moved to Washtucna in 1918, where he was engaged in farming until his death. He was a member of Rimrock grange and Trinity Oddfellows lodge in Walla Walla. Surviving were five brothers, Jessie of Washtucna, Adolph of Dayton, Rolla of Parksdale, Ore., and Lloyd Virgil of Urbana, Mo.; and five sisters, Mrs. Ruie Howard of Klammath Falls, Ore., Mrs. Effie Cox and Mrs. Alpha Hackler of Urbana, Mo., Mrs. Zella Baker and Mrs. Lois Stanton of Itaca, New York. One brother, Streeter, died in 1940 and another brother, Oscar in infancy. Interment was in the Walla Walla cemetery Thursday. Graveside services were conducted by the Trinity Oddfellows lodge. Funeral Is Held for Donovan Funeral services for Mike Donovan, longtime Ritzville resident and a former railroader, were held Thursday at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home with the Rev. Alfred Carter officiating. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Donovan died Monday at his home. Surviving were three step-daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Cook of Boise, Idaho, Mrs. Ella Mae McCarty of Spokane, and Mrs. Paul Cushman of Council, Idaho; and two step-sons, Frank of Ritzville and Walter of Trenton, N.J. He was born Feb. 15, 1872, in Rush City, Minn., and had been a resident of Adams county for over 50 years. He was married to Dora Jansen in Walla Walla on May 24, 1916. They had three sons. The eldest Robert, preceded him in death. Surviving him are his wife and two sons, John Henry and Donald at the home; two brothers, Charles Breit of Minneapolis and William Breit of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews. He was a past member of the Knights of Pythias, Oddfellows and Masonic lodges, and attended the Methodist church. Funeral services were held in the Danekas and Duncan funeral home in Ritzville with the Rev. M. A. Stebbins officiating. Burial was in the family plot in the Masonic cemetery at Walla Walla. Nissen, 56, Dies In Alaska KETCHIKAN, Alaska - Clarence Nissen, 56, died at his home here Nov. 5. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Nissen of Ritzville, where he also attended school. Surviving were his wife, Carolyn, and one son, Herbert, at the home; two other sons, Wesley of Monroe, Wash., and Clarence who is serving in the army in Germany; two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Virginia) MacElroy of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Walter (Lorraine) Luther of Ketchikan; also two brothers, Walter and William Nissen of Ritzville; and three sisters, Mrs. Hilda McCollom of Ritzville, Mrs. Sam George of Pasco and Mrs. J. H. Kison of Palm Springs, Calif. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Louis Seeland Death Reported. Word was received this week of the death of Louis Seeland, 78, at his home in St. Paul, Minn. His mother was the sister of the late Mrs. William Arlt, sr., and he leaves many relatives in this area. Louis Seeland, son of Albertina and August Seeland, was born in Glencoe, Minn., Jan. 8, 1878. In 1903 he married Lena Wulff. Survivors include his wife, one son, Laurence Seeland at the home and two grandsons; also one sister, Mrs. Oldga Henke of Hutchinson, Minn., and two brothers, Henry Seeland of Brownton and Fred Seeland of Stewart, Minn. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 15, 1956 Ropte Rites Held At Lind LIND - Funeral services for William Herbert Ropte, who died here Saturday, were held Wednesday at Good Hope Lutheran church with the Rev. Robert Drewes officiating. Burial was in the Lind cemetery. Ropte had lived here the past 26 years. He was a member of the Lutheran church and F. & A.M. Surviving were the widow, Carol, at the home; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Michelsen of Odessa, Mrs. Rose Weideranders of California, Mrs. Marie Newmeyer of Iowa and Mrs. Fannie Johnson of North Dakota; and two brothers, George and Fred, both of Iowa. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Gill Funeral Is Conducted WASHTUCNA - Word was received that William Gill, 84, of Waitsburg died Nov. 8 after a 2-day illness. Burial was Saturday at Pendleton, Ore. He is survived by his widow, Ruth, at their home; one son, William Gill of Portland, Ore.; and two daughters, Mrs. Joe (Virlie) Amburg of Waitsburg and Mrs. Harold (Ada) Williamson of California. All three were present at the burial. Ada and her husband had left Washington, D.C., and arrived in Waitsburg two days before her father died. Mr. Gill was a former postmaster in Washtucna and lived here many years. Their children were graduated from the local school. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 21, 1956 Funeral Held for Nissen of Ketchikan Clarence W. Nissen, 56, who died Nov. 5 in Ketchikan, Alaska, was buried last week in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Nissen was born and raised in Ritzville and after living two years in Spokane following his 1922 marriage to the former Caroline Metzer moved to a farm southwest of here. Later he spent two years during World War II with the army engineers at Adak island. Following the war he became a contractor at Ione. In 1954 he moved to Ketchikan where he was a millwright in a huge new pulp mill there. Surviving were the widow, Caroline, and a son, Herbert, at the home; and four other children, Wesley of Monroe, Virginia McElroy of Spokane, and Lorraine Luther of Ketchikan and A/1c Clarence Nissen, jr., stationed in Germany, who flew home for the funeral. Another son, Donald, died in 1929 at the age of two years. Also surviving were two brothers, Walter and William of Ritzville, and three sisters, Mrs. Hilda McCollom of Ritzville, Mrs. Sam George of Pasco, and Mrs. J. H. Kison of Palm Springs, Calif. Mrs. Hermann Funeral Held SEATTLE - Mrs. Mary E. Hermann, 67, died at her home here Nov. 10. She was born Sept. 18, 1889, in Hastings, Nev., and came to Ritzville in 1906 following her marriage to Jacob Hermann. They lived in Ritzville until 1949 when they moved to Seattle. Surviving are her husband at the home; one daughter, Mrs. Ralph Kinke of Seattle; and two grandchildren, Stuart and Elaine of Seattle. She was the aunt of Mrs. Harry Schwisow of Ritzville. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Seattle with burial in the Pacific Lutheran cemetery. The Rev. George J. Grewenow officiated. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 29, 1956 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 6, 1956 Williams Back From Funeral S. J. Williams returned Tuesday from Phoenix, Ariz., where funeral services for his son, Walter R., were held Nov. 21. The son was found dead on natural causes in a panel truck he had parked alongside a road. Born at Quincy, Walter had graduated from School District No. 10 in 1921 with a straight "A" record, and was a 4-H member. He left Ritzville in 1925 and saw service with the merchant marine and army. Also surviving were his widow, Frances; four brothers, Clifford of Spokane, Glenn of Seattle, Bert of San Francisco, and Art of Long Beach; and a sister, Mrs. Esther Thowbridge of Port Angeles. Funeral Held for Mrs. Stahl RALSTON - Funeral services for Julie Stahl, 70, who died Nov. 30 at the family farm two miles east of Ralston, were held Tuesday with the Rev. Alfred Carter officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mrs. Stahl was born March 1, 1886, at Sagatine, Hungary, and came to Chicago in 1908. There she married Emil Stahl in 1911. The couple settled at Ralston in 1913. Surviving are the husband, Emil; and a sister living in Hungary. Mrs. Harman Funeral Rites Mrs. Helen D. Harman, 62, died Nov. 16 at the Adams County Memorial hospital. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. M. J. (Delia) Hilton, at whose home she had been living, and two sons, Guy E. Harman of Ingelwood, Calif., and Morris A. Harman of Chadron, Neb. Her body was shipped to Chadron, Neb., for burial. Mr. and Mrs. Hilton attended the funeral at Chadron. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 13, 1956 Funeral Set on Saturday for Krause, 67 Funeral services for Ernest August Krause, 67, who died Wednesday at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Burial will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Krause had been in the hospital 81 days. He was a member of the Lutheran church, IOOF and Marcellus Grange. Born in Wisconsin, Krause came to the Ritzville district some 65 years ago. A farmer, he had been living in retirement in town. Surviving were the widow, Rita; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Langenheder of Athol, Idaho, and Mrs. Dorothy Stromberger of Sprague; four sisters, Mrs. Ella Irby of Astoria, Ore., Mrs. Eva Johnson of Spokane, Mrs. Alvina Turner of Allegheney, Ore., and Mrs. Marie Brice of Milwaukee, Wis.; and a brother, Frank of Portland; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral Held for Gross 77 ODESSA - Funeral services for Gottfried F. Gross, 77, who died Wednesday, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Congregational church with the Rev. E. G. Klein officiating. Burial will be in the Odessa cemetery. Born March 19, 1880, in Europe, Gross came to the United States in 1889. His family settled at Ralston. In 1912 Gross was married to Mary Raugust of Odessa, and the young couple homesteaded at Minidoka, Idaho. After six years they moved to Ralston and four years later, in 1922, moved to Odessa where they farmed five miles north of town until their reitrement in 1944. Survivors include the widow, Mary, at the home; a son, Paul, of Odessa; three daughters, Ruth Deerheim of Lind, Edna Hille of Portland, and Viola Santala of Waupon, Wis.; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral Held for Watkins on Thursday PHOENIX, Ore. - Funeral services were held last Thursday for Jesse Willis Watkins, 81, who died Dec. 4. The Rev. Ernest Volkman of the Phoenix Presbyterian church officiated assisted by members of Ashland Lodge No. 23, F. & A.M. Burial was in the Phoenix cemetery. Watkins was born May 8, 1875, in Missouri and moved to Adams county, Wash., in 1888 where on Sept. 23, 1900, he was married to Gertrude Best, who survives. In 1920 they moved to Jackson county where he engaged in orchard and general farming until he retired several years ago. He was a charter member of F&AM lodge 145 of Lind, Wash., and a Mason for 56 years. Other survivors were his son, Floyd P. Watkins of Medford; two daughters, Mrs. Chester I. Bourne of Medford and Mrs. E. H. Judd of Menlo Park, Calif.; one brother, P. A. Watkins of Santa Monica, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Grace Edith, preceded him in death in 1921. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 20, 1956 Funeral Held for Quast, 59 Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Fred Quast, 59, at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. Herbert Haemmelmann officiating. Quast died at his home Friday evening. Born in Eugene, Ore., Quast came to Adams county nearly 50 years ago and farmed about six miles southeast of Ritzville. Surviving are his widow, Edna, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Julia Weir and Mrs. Iris LaMarche, both of Seattle; one brother, Martin Quast of Davenport; and three grandchildren, Janice and Jimmie Weir and Barbara LaMarche, all of Seattle. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mrs. Brewer Funeral Held Last Tuesday PASCO - Funeral services for Mrs. Rose Brewer of Lind were held Tuesday at the Congregational church here with the Rev. R. W. Ritchey officiating. Mrs. Brewer, who lived in the tri-city area from 1926 until 1950, died Saturday at Ashland, Ore., where she had been staying with relatives. Mrs. Brewer's husband, Cleon, was employed by banks at Pasco and during World War II organized a branch bank at Hanford. Later he became manager of the Richland bank. Since 1950 the Brewers had lived in Lind where Mr. Brewer is manager of the Lind branch of the Seattle-First National bank. Mrs. Brewer helped train USO hostesses during World War II and taught in Richland school when the family lived there. She also taught at Lind. Also surviving were two sons, James of Denver and Howard, in the navy; a daughter, Mrs. Rustin A. Brewer of Kennewick; a granddaughter, Kristi Ann Brewer, Kennewick; her mother, Mrs. S. Porter of White Salmon; and three sisters. Mrs. Bauer's Funeral Slated for Saturday Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Margaret Bauer, 53, who died Wednesday at her home, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Philadelphia Congregational church with the Rev. R. Kirschenmann and the Rev. Herbert Haemmelmann officiating. Burial will be in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. A complete obit will be published later. Mrs. Setterland Dies at Tacoma Word was received this week of the death of Mrs. Ben Setterland, 62, of Tacoma. The Setterlands lived in Ritzville for many years while Ben was manager of the White River Lumber company here. Surviving were the husband, Ben; a daughter, Mrs. Clyde Browning of Tacoma; and two grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 27, 1956 Sieverkropp Funeral Rites Set for Friday ODESSA - Herman Henrick Sieverkropp, 61, died Dec. 24 in the Adams County Memorial hospital at Ritzville. He had lived in this area for 58 years after coming here from Puyallup. He was a veteran of World War I and took part in the battle of Argonne and Flanders in Belgium and France. Sieverkropp was a member of the Odessa grange and Lutheran church. Surviving were his widow, Mille, at the home; one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Kendall of Paducah, Ky.; five sons, Eldred of Ritzville, Ray and Robert of Ephrata and Donald and Wayne of Odessa; and one sister, Mrs. Emma Juedes of Salem, Ore. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Lutheran church 18 miles west of Ritzville with the Rev. William Hausauer officiating. Burial will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery with Danekas and Duncan funeral home in charge of arrangements.
