Nelson of the recent death of Fred F. Koch of Buhl, Idaho. Koch was born at Kolb, Russia, in 1872 and with his family moved to Adams county near Ritzville. He was married to Anna Thiel of Ritzville. Funeral services were held Dec. 24, 1956, with burial at the Buhl city cemetery. Surviving were his widow, Anna; two sons, Art and Roy of Buhl; three daughters, Mrs. Ora Sumers of Twin Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Lucille Kimball and Mrs. Ruby Gerry of Seattle; three brothers, George Koch of Lind and Henry and Jake of Prineville, Ore.; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Murry of Chula Vista, Calif., and Mrs. Pauline Gipdon of Portland; and several grandchildren. Funeral Service Held for Mrs. Sullivan WASHTUCNA - The community was saddened by the sudden death of Mrs. George Sullivan, sr., Saturday, Dec. 29, from a heart attack. She did not feel well Saturday and her son, George, took her to the Colfax hospital where she died shortly afterward. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., Jan. 2, from the Washtucna Community church with the Rev. A. K. Walborn of Kellogg, Ida., and the Rev. J. Woodworth officiating at the services. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Hazel Gwendolyn Sullivan, daughter of Clark and Ara Long, was born in Ritzville, March 10, 1894. She had her schooling at Paha and one term at Cheney Normal. She taught in the Fletcher school. In 1917 she was united in marriage to George E. Sullivan who preceded her in death in 1933. The Sullivans were the parents of two daughters and five sons. One daughter, Audrey, died in 1943. Surviving are Mrs. Beulah Blankenship, George, Sidney, Clark and Bernard Sullivan of Washtucna, and Daniel Sullivan of Lenore, Ida. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. William P. Dunlap of Elmer City and Mrs. B.F. Collier of Garfield; one brother, Joseph Long of Washtucna; 17 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sullivan was a member of the Ladies of the Round Table, Rebekah lodge, Adams County Historical Society, Women's Missionary society and the Washtucna Community church. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 10, 1957 Funeral Services Held for Betts WASHTUCNA - Funeral services were held Jan. 3 for Virgil Betts in LaGrande, Ore., where he had lived for many years. Surviving were his father, Luke Betts of Spokane; and three sisters, Mrs. May Dyer of Spokane, Mrs. Beulah Sitton of Rosalia and Mrs. Bertha Rucker of California. He attended the Washtucna school and married Eva Davis (sister of Mrs. Rex Davis). They lived here many years before moving to LaGrande. Carmeron Dies at Union Gap WASHTUCNA - Floyd Cameron received word Friday night that his brother, Grover Cameron, had died that evening in a nursing home in Union Gap. Floyd left Saturday morning to help the family with funeral arrangements. He returned Sunday afternoon. Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Cameron left to attend the funeral in Union Gap Tuesday. Grover Allen Cameron, 67, died Friday after a lingering illness. He was an employee of the state highway department for 27 years before retiring in 1949. Surviving were the widow, Lula; four sons, including Lester and Chester of Union Gap; three daughters; four sisters and one brother, Floyd of Washtucna. Mrs. Bauer's Funeral Held Dec. 22 Funeral services were held Dec. 22 for Mrs. William (Margaret) Bauer, 53, who died at her home Dec. 19, at the Philadelphia Congregational church with the Rev. R. Kirschenmann officiating. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Schafer, she was born in Odessa Jan. 27, 1903. On Sept. 22, 1921, she was married to William Bauer at Walla Walla. For nearly 35 years they operated a farm near Ritzville. For the past ten years she had been in ill health. Surviving were her husband; four sons, Wesley of Auburn, Davis of Hatton, William of Seattle, and Harland of Ritzville; three sisters, Mrs. Ray Dawson of Walla Walla, Mrs. Nick Klaus of Albany and Alma Schafer of Portland; one brother, Samuel Schafer of Odessa; and four grandchildren. Double Funeral Held Wednesday PORTLAND, Ore. - A funeral scheduled for Monday became a double funeral Wednesday as the deceased man's widow died the day her husband was scheduled to be buried. The man, Adolph Sommer, 62, had died last Thursday. Four days later his widow, Kathleen, also died. The double rites were conducted here Wednesday. Attending from Ritzville were Sommer's sister, Mrs. Alma Reiff, and her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Laurin Heimbigner. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 17, 1957 Mrs. Edwards' Funeral Is Held TEKOA - Mrs. Mattie A. Edwards, 84, died in a Spokane hospital Jan. 10. Born in Minonk, Ill., she came with her family to Ritzville in 1886. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Tekoa Methodist church. Surviving were eight children, 38 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren' one sister, Mrs. Minnie Scheel, and one brother, Henry Ahlers, both of Ritzville. Dettman Rites Held Thursday Funeral services for Fred William Dettman, 67, who died Monday at the local hospital, were to be held Thursday afternoon at Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating and burial in the Lutheran cemetery. Born in Chicago Oct. 17, 1889, Dettman moved to the Connell area with his family at the age of 11. He farmed in that region before moving to the Ritzville district where he lived for 20 years. In 1932 Dettman was married to Minnie Freese. One daughter, Ruth, preceded him in death. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church. Surviving were the widow, Minnie, at the home; a son, George F. Dettman of Spokane; three sisters, Mrs. William Krug of Ritzville, Mrs. Art Zarbach of Thornton and Mrs. Louis Wilder of Kahlotus; and a brother, William Dettman of Connell. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 24, 1957 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 31, 1957 Mrs. Dryden's Funeral Set for Saturday Funeral services for Mrs. Ardell Dryden, 64, a Ritzville native who died Monday at her home in Ellensburg, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery. Mrs. Dryden and her husband, Ardell, who survives her, formerly operated the Adams House in Ritzville before it became the Desert hotel and later the Davis. Later they operated the Whitman hotel at Colfax and the Elton hotel in Ellensburg. At the time of Mrs. Dryden's death the couple was operating an apartment house in Ellensburg. Mrs. Dryden, the former Minnie Bierman, also was survived by four sisters, Mrs. Helene Miller of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Clara Surfus of Oregon City, Ore., Mrs. Elsie Smith of Salem, Ore., and Mrs. Mable Lehman, also of Portland; and two brothers, Rick and Ed Bierman, both of Ritzville. Also surviving are two nephews and two nieces, Everett Bierman of Ritzville, Gary Smith of Salem, Ore., Mrs. Thelma Bauman and Mrs. Patty Seivers, both of Lind. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 7, 1957 Funeral Set for Thursday Mrs. Gertrude M. Fuqua, 90, of Pendleton, Ore., died Feb. 3 in a Spokane nursing home. Surviving were two nephews, C. A. Weaver of Lind, and Frank Fuqua of Spokane, and six nieces. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. this Thursday at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. Edward Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Lind cemetery. Revered Sala Dies In Spokane SPOKANE - Funeral arrangements for the Rev. Joseph Sala, 77, who died Friday, are pending location of a son, Dick, and the arrival of a daughter, Bonnie Gottschalk, from Ceylon. Rev. Sala, who conducted evangelistic meetings in the Ritzville-Lind area some years ago, also is survived by his widow, Mrs. Joseph Sala, and another daughter, Mrs. Richard Philp of Ritzville, who is now staying with her mother in Spokane. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 14, 1957 Rites Attended by Mrs. Adams Mrs. Agnes Adams attended the funeral Thursday for her brother, Burns Gilman, in Tacoma. Gilman, 84, died at his home last Tuesday. Burial was in the Lakeview cemetery in Portland. Surviving were his widow, Georgia, at the home; two sons, Robert Gilman of Seattle, and Harold of Los Angeles; three sisters, Mrs. Lou Rich of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. June Nelson of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Mrs. Adams of Ritzville, and one brother, Fred Gilman of Los Angeles. Funeral Held for Former Miller Here CHENEY - Funeral services for B. J. Eason, a former superintendent of the Ritzville Flouring Mill, were held Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic church with Fr. Edward J. Kowrach officiating. Eason, mill superintendent of the National Biscuit company mill at Cheney for 34 years until his retirment in 1953, died the previous Tuesday. Eason came to Washington from Creston, Iowa, in 1907 and began his milling career with Centennial Mills at the age of 18. He spent 13 years with Centennial, eight at the Sprague Roller mill and five as superintendent in Ritzville. In 1919 Eason moved to Cheney to join the new F. M. Martin Grain and Milling company mill, which at that time operated with a 500-barrel capacity. When the mill was sold to the National Biscuit company in June, 1943, Eason remained as mill superintendent. When he retired, capacity of the plant had doubled. Surviving were the widow, Pearl; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Seigel of Cleveland, Ohio; two grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. George Jensen. Surviving are his parents, his grandmothers, Mrs. Emma Hintz of Moses Lake and Mrs. Fred Burghard of Ritzville. Services were held at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home in Ritzville with the Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiating. H. Tietz officiating. Surviving are the widow, Sue J.; one son, Robert, and one daughter, Joan Cheryl, all at the home; his mother, Mrs. Fred Buscher; three brothers, Edward Buscher and Fred Buscher all of Ritzville and Henry Buscher of Kettle Falls; four sisters, Mrs. Esther Van Buren of Ritzville, Mrs. Helen Luiten of Lamona, Mrs. Ethel Brandt of Waterville, and Mrs. Mabel Bates of Seattle. He was a member of the Lutheran church. Burial was in Pines cemetery. Cora E. Cannon Funeral Held SPOKANE - Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Cora E. Cannon. Surviving were six sons, Will W. and Lloyd Rummer of Spokane, Al Rummer of Ritzville, Wilbur Cannon of Monitory and Ralph Cannon of Colbert, and Howard Cannon of Kahlotus. Also 25 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. The Rev. Rowan O'Brien officiated at the services with burial in Greenwood cemetery. Loren Hays Dies, Seattle Hospital; Was Newsman WASHTUCNA - Word came to Mr. and Mrs. John S. Gray that Loren Hays, 49, a newspaperman of Monrovia, Calif., died Thursday in a Seattle hospital. Surviving were his wife, Mary Russell Hays, and two sons at the home. The older is a freshman in college. Mrs. Hays is a daughter of Dr. D. A. Russell and spent her childhood here and was graduated from the local school. Hays was on a business trip to the coast. He stopped in Portland to visit his brothers-in-law, the Rev. Robert Russell and family and David Russell and family. He left there for Seattle and when near the university stopped his car at the side of a road and asked a man to drive him quickly to the hospital. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 21, 1957 Fred E. Haupt, Ex-Ritzville Resident, Dies WALLA WALLA - Fred E. Haupt, secretary-manager of the Blue Mountain National Farm Loan association here and a fomer resident of Ritzville, died here last Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at a Walla Walla chapel and was followed by cremation. He was one of the pioneers in the federal farm finance field in the Pacific Northwest. Haupt came to Walla Walla in 1944 from Colfax and became active in community affairs and athletic life. Haupt served on the board of the YMCA and the Community Chest with one year as president of the latter. He belonged to the Masonic bodies, Elks, American Legion 40 et 8, VFW, Booster club and 158 club, being a past master of the former. Born March 17, 1897, in St. Paul, Minn., Haupt would have been 60 last Sunday. He came to Washington at an early age and lived in Spokane, Davenport, Ritzville and Colfax. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hazel Haupt of Walla Walla; two sons, Fred C. of Spokane and Harold of Walla Walla; one daughter, Mrs. Ed (Charlene) Rolison of Portland and nine grandchildren. Funeral Services Held for McKee LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Funeral services were held here last Wednesday for Larry McKee. Surviving were his wife, Mrs. Leona McKee; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Scott and Mrs. Maxine McDonald; three sons, Hengel, Everett and Gerald; a sister and brother, Mrs. Ida Callahan and Ward McKee. Mr. McKee formerly lived in Ritzville, Wash., where he was in charge of the milling operation at the Centennial Mill for 26 years. Death Claims John H. Gillis ALHAMBRA, Calif. - John Herschel Gillis, who went to high school in Ritzville, Wash., died here Wednesday morning following a heart attack. He had been ill for the last two years. Gillis, who went to high school in Ritzville before entering World War I, was born in Athena, Ore., on April 21, 1900. After the war he attended Washington State college. Surviving are his wife, Jennell Gillis of Alhambra, and two daughters of Alhambra and a brother, Ralph C. Gillis of Ritzville. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 25, at Stevens and Turner funeral home in Alhambra. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 28, 1957 Mrs. Josephine Rose Dies In Walla Walla WALLA WALLA - Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine M. Rose of Walla Walla, mother of Gordon A. Rose of Ritzville, were held Monday afternoon at a local funeral home. The Rev. Harry R. Baird conducted the final rites. Burial was in Mountain View cemetery. Gordon Rose is with the state patrol and works out of Ritzville. He makes his home in that city also. Mrs. Robbins Dies At 60 KENNEWICK - Funeral services were held from the First Methodist church March 14, for Mrs. Marian Hammer Robbins, 60. "Woman of the Year for Washington in 1953," with the Rev. Kenneth Underwood officiating. She was secretary of Indian Affairs and later referee of the Yakima Indian Affairs committee, a position believed never before held by a woman. Mrs. Robbins was past president of the Federated Women's clubs of Washington, a member of the National Board of Federated Women's clubs of America, a member of the Fullbright scholarship committee of Washington and the state board of the National Heart association. Survivors included her husband, Norman; one son, her father, a brother and three grandchildren. Her husband is a graduate of Ritzville high school and her late father-in- law, Mr. Robbins, was general manager of the White Lumber company in Ritzville before leaving here in 1925. Ex-Ritzville Resident Dies TOPPENISH - Funeral services were held March 26 for Fred Kanzler, 73, who died March 23 in a local hospital. Mr. Kanzler was born to Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Kanzler in Kolb, Russia, Sept. 13, 1884. He was one of six children. He settled in Ritzville in 1905, coming from Russia. He made his home here until 1915 when he moved to Toppenish. Surviving are his brother, John Kanzler of Spokane and a sister, Anna Kanzler of Ritzville. Services were conducted by the Rev. O. B. Reitz. Burial was in the Wapato cemetery. Giese Services Held at Odessa ODESSA - Funeral services were held Monday from English Congregational church for Adolph Giese, with the Rev. William Houser officiating. Surviving were his widow, Anna, at home; two sons, Merlin Giese of Fort Ord, Calif., and Dwayne at home; and two daughters, Mrs. Patsy Wahl of Ralston and Vicki Giese at home. Also three brothers, Augusta Giese of Odessa, Henry Giese of Spokane and John Giese of Davenport; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Janke of Davenport, Mrs. Ida Mills of Odessa, Mrs. Pauline Garret of Warm Springs, Mont., and Mrs. Elsie Chess of Longview. Burial was in the Odessa cemetery.
