Miller, long-time Adams county resident, who died Saturday at his home. He was born in Kolb, Russia, on Dec. 23, 1872, and came to the United States with his parents at the age of six years. They settled in Ohio and Nebraska where he attended public schools. In 1884 the family returned to Russia, staying but a short time before returning to America to make their permanent home. In 1894, Mr. Miller homesteaded near Schoonover. He was married to Anna Margaret Schafer in 1898 and she survives him at the home. He also has five daughters, Mrs. Freda Koch, Mrs. Noami VanVleet, Mrs. Mary Streeter, all of Ritzville, Mrs. Esther Hughes of Colbert and Mrs. Alma Heimbigner of Seattle; four sons, J. Austin and Clarence Miller of Ritzville, Otto Miller of Connell and Alvin Miller of Portland. Also there is one sister, Mrs. Emma Vevea of Opportunity; three brothers, George and Alex Miller of Ritzville and Peter Miller of Coeur d'Alene, 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel with the Rev. R. W. Rieger and the Rev. Alex Rehn officiating. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Peter Thiel Dies Monday Funeral services for Peter Thiel, 82, who died in a Spokane hospital Monday, Sept. 30, were to be held this afternoon (Thursday) at Emanuel Lutheran church. The Rev. F. J. Ahrendt was to officiate. Interment will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Danekas and Duncan funeral home will be in charge of arrangements. His wife preceded him in death last July. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Jake (Leah) Klaus of Portland, Mrs. Elmer (Bertha) Schoesler, Mrs. Harold (Ruby) Schoesler and Mrs. Art (Laura) Heinemann, all of Ritzville; two sons, Arthur and Aaron Thiel of Ritzville, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church. Mr. Thiel has been a resident of the Ritzville community for 58 years. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 10, 1957 Former Resident Dies in Portland EUGENE, Ore. - Mrs. Millie Lowry McFarland died Oct. 1, 1957, at the Veteran's hospital in Portland. Burial was Oct. 5 at Sandpoint, Idaho. She was the niece of Mrs. Mary Pierce in Ritzville, Wash., and graduated from the Ritzville high school in 1917. She made her home with Mrs. Pierce for three years. Other survivors were her sons, Earl McFarland of Eugene, Donald McFarland of Berkeley, Calif., and John McFarland of Wenatchee. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 17, 1957 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 24, 1957 Montana Lady Dies In City Mrs. Emma O. Montgomery of Kalispell, Mont., died in Ritzville Monday afternoon at the Adams County Memorial hospital here following a short illness. She had come to Ritzville recently with two of her daughters, who reside here, to spend the winter months. These daughters are Mrs. Dan (Pearle) Weber and Mrs. John (Alice) Kison. Two other daughters survive her, Mrs. Roland Cutting of Seattle and Mrs. Dan Baldwin of Mundelien, Ill., and one elder sister, Mrs. Christine Buck of Kalispell. She was the widow of Richard Earl Montgomery, a Spanish-American War veteran, who died in 1942. The family home had been in Kalispell since the early 1900s. The body was sent to Kalispell for funeral services. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of local arrangments. Adin Railsback Dies, Spokane HATTON - Adin J. Railsback, a long time resident of Michigan Prairie, died Saturday, Oct. 19, at a Spokane hospital after a lingering illness. Mr. Railsback is survived by his wife, Maude, at the home, Opportunity, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Russell (Genevieve) Gehres, Lind; Mrs. Ray (Norma) Adamson, Deer Park; one brother, Lew Railsback, Portland, Ore.; one sister, Lena Railsback, Spokane; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. and Mrs. Railsback moved to Opportunity in 1944. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 23, from the Thornhill Valley funeral home. Interment was at the Michigan Prairie cemetery. (Full obit in Oct. 31 issue) Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 31, 1957 Emil A. Schragg Dies In Colfax Emil A. Schragg of Ritzville died Wednesday in Colfax. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Link of Colfax and Mrs. Dorothy Heimbigner of Ritzville, two sons, Arnold of Ritzville and Oscar of Odessa, four sisters, Miss Pauline Schragg, Mrs. August Allenbach, Mrs. Eugenia Schluneger, all of Colfax. He was a member of the Menno Mennonite church of Ritzville. His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, with the Rev. Lester Janzen officiating. He will be interred in the Mennonite cemetery. Danekas and Duncan funeral home is in charge of arrangements. A. J. Railsback, Early Hatton Settler Dies HATTON - Funeral services were held Oct. 23 at Thornhill Valley funeral home in the Spokane Valley for Aden J. Railsback, who died at 11 p.m. Oct. 19 at a Spokane hospital. Mr. Railsback was born Sept. 3, 1880, to George and Samantha (Kelsey) Railsback of Hamilton, Mo. He attended school at Hamilton and came to the Hatton area in the spring of 1902, at the age of 21. He was married to Maude Goodenough of Hatton on Dec. 6, 1905, in Ritzville. To them were born three children, Leighton Railsback, deceased; Mrs. Russell (Genevieve) Gehres of Lind and Mrs. Ray (Norma) Adamson of Deer Park. Aden farmed in the Hatton area until he retired and they moved to Opportunity in 1944. He was a member of the Methodist church and East Spokane Grange. Before moving he was a member of the Connell Grange. He is survived by his wife, Maude, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Gehres of Lind and Mrs. Adamson of Deer Park; a sister, Miss Lena Railsback of Spokane, and a brother, Lew Railsback of Portland, Ore. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Leighton Gehres in the U. S. Air Force at Hampton, Va.; Norma Gehres, attending the University of Washington at Seattle; Robert Gehres of Lind, Clark Adamson and Joyce Adamson, both of Deer Park; and one great-granddaughter, Diane Gehres of Hampton, Va. The Rev. David Almon was in charge of the services in Spokane and the Rev. William Ritchey had charge of the committal service at the Michigan Prairie cemetery. Nora Cannon Dies In Idaho HATTON - Mrs. Nora Cannon, 79, wife of John Cannon, died Saturday night in a rest home in Lewiston, Ida. She had been ill for the last five years with cancer. Mrs. Cannon was born Oct. 17, 1878, in Iowa. She was married to John Cannon in Atlantic, Iowa, March 13, 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon came west in 1905 and settled at Hatton. Mr. Cannon worked in a shoe repair and harness shop with Harry Sherman until the tractors replaced the horses and there was no need for harness. He then had a grocery store. After about 13 years in Hatton, they moved to Rubens, Ida., where she lived until her last illness. She was a member of the Methodist church. Besides her husband, who is in a rest home, Mrs. Cannon is survived by two sons, Everett (Big) Cannon of Lapwai and Raymond (Little) Cannon of Lewiston, Ida.; a daughter Mrs. Louis G. (Ethel) Lunders of Clarkston; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers in the Middle West. The body is a Merchant funeral home in Clarkston pending funeral arrangements. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 7, 1957 Clyde Hicks, Former Rancher in Cunningham District Dies CUNNINGHAM - Clyde Hicks, who formerly farmed in this area, died Saturday in Cheney. He was the father of Ramon Hicks. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 14, 1957 Oliver Waddell of Benge, Dies, Retired RR Man Funeral services for Oliver Perry Waddell, 87, a retired engineer for the Northern Pacific railway who died Nov. 6 at Adams County Memorial hospital, were held Friday morning. Waddell, whose home was in Benge, was born in Smithsville, Mo., on Jan. 13, 1870. He had lived in the Benge area since 1885. He was a railroad engineer for 25 years. The Rev. Alfred Carter and the Benge IOOF lodge conducted the funeral services in the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. Cremation followed. He had been a member of the Benge IOOF lodge more than 35 years. Surviving were two daughters, Bernice and Jessie, a son, Walter Waddell; a brother, William J. Waddell of Bremerton and two half brothers, Sidney Johnson of Longview and Charles L. Johnson of Olympia. Final Service Held Tuesday for Schoesler Funeral services for Harold E. Schoesler, 52, mayor of Ritzville who died in Spokane last Friday, were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Zion Congregational church. The Rev. R. W. Rieger, pastor, officiated. Interment was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. He was born in Ritzville on April 16, 1905. Mr. Schoesler took over as mayor in 1949 and served in that position until his death and also was the Association oil dealer in this city. He was a member of the Ritzville Lions club and of the Zion Congregational church. Mr. Schoesler is survived by his wife, Ruby, at the home; a son, Ronald Schoesler of Spokane; two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Flager of Spokane and Mrs. Joan Robinson of Salem, Ore.; his father, Henry Schoesler, of Ritzville; three brothers, Walter, Raymond and Marvin Schoesler, all of Ritzville and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Danekas and Duncan funeral home. Robert F. Lloyd Rites Held Here Funeral services for Robert Fraser Lloyd, 88, who died in the Ritzville Memorial hospital Oct. 31, were held Nov. 4, at the chapel of the Danekas and Duncan funeral home. The Rev. Alfred Carter officiated. Interment was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. He was born Feb. 18, 1869, in Canada and was a resident of Ritzville for 47 years. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Alice Diers of Seattle; two sons, Nelson V. of Burlington, and Cecil S. of Spokane; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Staley Services Held Wednesday Funeral services for Harvey Christian Staley, 76, who died at his home on Friday, Nov. 7, were held Wednesday at the chapel of the Danekas and Duncan funeral home. The Rev. Alfred Carter officiated. Interment ws in the Dayton cemetery. He was born Dec. 25, 1881, in Missouri, and lived in Ritzville for 15 years. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by a brother, Archie Staley, of Walla Walla. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 21, 1957 Emma L. Hille Dies Sunday; Area Native Emma L. Hille passed away at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane, Sunday, Nov. 17. Her home was in Ritzville. She is survived by her husband, John F. Hille, of Ritzville, and a son, Wallace Weber of Seattle; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Lewis Emerson of Lind; a stepson, Calvin Hille of Ralston; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Bauer of Ritzville, and Mrs. Ella Haase of Rice, and eight brothers, William Arlt, Carl Arlt, John Arlt, Herman Arlt, all of Ritzville, Edward Arlt of Creston, B.C., Louis Arlt of Colfax, Albert Arlt of Addy and Henry Arlt of Chewlah. Emma Lydia Arlt Hille was born on the Arlt homestead at Marcellus, a daughter of William and Bertha Henkelmann Arlt, on Dec. 28, 1905. She was the second youngest of eight children. "Emzie" as she was affectionately known, attended country school and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. As a young married woman she lived on a farm near Ritzville for a time. She then moved to Cashmere and later to Orondo where she lived for several years. In 1938 she returned to Ritzville and had made her home in this community ever since. She was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church, the Ritzville American Legion and the Rebekah lodge of Ritzville. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, from the Philadelphia Congregational church. The Rev. Herbert Hammelmann officiated. Interment was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 28, 1957 Daniel Selcho Dies, Spokane Daniel Selcho, passed away Nov. 22, at a nursing home in Spokane at the age of 49 years. He was born in Ritzville on Nov. 14, 1908, and grew to manhood here. About 15 years ago he moved to Spokane where he was employed by Centennial Mills until his health gave out. Twelve years ago he was stricken with multiple sclerosis and has been confined and bedfast nearly all those years. He was married to Helene Zellar on Sept. 14, 1928. He is survived by his wife, Helene, at the home in Spokane, and a son, Bruce, at home; his stepmother, Mrs. Christine Selcho; four brothers, Emil, John, Emanuel, all of Ritzville, and Reinhold; a stepbrother, Clarence Fleming of Seattle, and two stepsisters, Mrs. Violet Harlow of Dayton, Ohio, and Sadie Selcho of San Francisco. Funeral services were held Monday morning in the chapel of Danekas and Duncan funeral home. The Rev. F. J. Ahrendt officiated. Thornhill funeral home of Spokane was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Anna Bauer Funeral Service Held on Monday Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Bauer passed away Nov. 21, at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane. She was 80 years old and had resided for the last 47 years in Ritzville. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. T. R. Manke of Ritzville, and Mrs. Roy Skinner of Coeur d'Alene, Ida., two sons, Clarence Bauer and Albert Bauer, both of Ritzville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Henry Kembel of Ritzville and a brother, Alex Rehn of Spokane. She was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church and the Senior Ladies Aid. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Philadelphia Congregational church with the Rev. Herbert Haemmelmann officiating. Interment was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. David Kosanke Dies In Idaho, Civic Leader AMERICAN FALLS, Ida. - David Kosanke, 69, who lived in Adams county, Wash., more than 30 years ago, died recently after a long illness. Kosanke was a resident of Powers county, Ida., for 43 years and the man who moved the town of American Falls to its present site from the area now part of a huge reservoir. He homesteaded in the Raft river section west of this town in 1914 and went to American Falls in 1922. He was widely known for many civic activities, was a member of the Rotary club, chamber of commerce, Moose lodge and a director of the Schlitz Memorial hospital. Kosanke had extensive farm holdings and was owner of the Kosanke Motor company. He was born Dec. 28, 1887, in South Russia to Ferdinand and Mary Kosanke. The family came to the United States in 1892, residing in North Dakota before moving to Washington state. In 1909 Kosanke married Lydia Frieske at Ritzville, Wash. Surviving are his wife, three sons, Albert, Aberdeen and Art of American Falls; three daughters, Mrs. G. G. (Slema) Johnson of Lakeside, California, Mrs. Jim (Helen) Shaw of American Falls and Mrs. Jim (Esther) Phillips of San Diego; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. John Stehr of Ritzville, and two brothers, Sam of Cottage Grove, Ore., and Reinhold of Ritzville. Joseph Schrag Funeral Held Funeral services for Joseph J. Schrag, who passed away Nov. 14, at the age of 83 years, were held at the Menno Mennonite church Nov. 16. The Rev. Lester E. Janzen and the Rev. Kopf officiated. Mr. Schrag was born Nov. 30, 1873, at Waltheim, Russia, and came to America with his parents in 1874, settling in South Dakota. In 1888 he came west to Oregon and 10 years later he came to the Schrag community and took up a homestead. In 1916 he and his family moved to Monroe and four years ago they went to Odessa. He married Lena Gering Nov. 6, 1907, and to them were born nine children, all of whom with their mother survive. They are Mrs. Ella Wilskie, Odessa; Mrs. Gertrude Parke, Seattle; Mrs. Martha Hoyt, Yakima; David, Odessa; Mrs. Violet Hopson, San Diego, Calif.; Philip, Odessa; Mrs. Frances Nevitt, Seattle; Mrs. Eileen Jantz, Richland, and Mrs. Louise Connelly, Monroe. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Tom Kauffman, Freeman, S. D., and two brothers, Henry Schrag of Ritzville and Ewalt Schrag of Monroe. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 5, 1957 John Schroeder Final Rites Held Funeral services for John Phillip Schroeder, 86, who passed away at the Adams County Memorial hospital Dec. 1, were held Tuesday at the Emanuel Lutheran church. Kanzler of Ritzville, and Mrs. W. F. Stockman, also of Ritzville; two sons, Aaron Schroeder of rural Sprague, and Levein Schroeder of Ritzville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was born Feb. 12, 1871, in Worrenburg, Russia, and came to Ritzville 56 years ago. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 12, 1957 John Strohmaier Dies In Spokane LIND - Funeral services for John Strohmaier were held Tuesday from the Zion Congregational church at Lind. The Rev. R. Kirschenmann officiated. Interment was in the Lind cemetery. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Roth, Mrs. Emma Dirks, and Mrs. Anna Krein, all of Spokane; two brothers, Fred Strohmaier of Garfield, and William Strohmaier of Lind. He was a member of the Lind Grange and the Lind Zion Congregational church. Mr. Strohmaier died last Friday in Spokane. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 19, 1957 Ex-McCall-Harder School Teacher Dies SPOKANE - A teacher in the Harder-McCall and Dewey district schools many years ago, Mrs. Esther Phelps, died in Spokane recently. Services were held last Wednesday at Gothic chapel and burial was in Pines cemetery. She was survived by her widower, Harold, her mother, one daughter, a grandson, a brother and a sister. She taught in one-room schools in the Harder- McCall and Dewey districts. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 26, 1957 Katie Lenhart Funeral Held ODESSA - Funeral services for Mrs. Katie Lenhart were held from the United Congregational church Friday afternoon. The Rev. E. G. Klein officiate. Burial was in the Odessa cemetery. Mrs. Lenhart, who moved to Odessa from the Packard area, was an active member of the United Congregational church, the Ladies' Aid and the American Legion auxiliary. She was born Sept. 14, 1900, in Russia. Survivors include her husband at the home; one son, Wayne, of Spokane; three daughters, Miss Loretta Lenhart of Odessa, Mrs. Laverna Koch of Seattle, and Mrs. Wilma Schmidt of Odessa, and 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Walter of Marlin and Sam Walter of Wenatchee; seven sisters, Mrs. Mary Stueckle of Colfax; Mrs. Alma Koch, Wenatchee; Mrs. Freida Lind, Kittitas; Mrs. Hanna Ils, Ritzville; Mrs. Helen Zeimer, Sprague; Mrs. Martha Koch, Ritzville, and Mrs. Loretta Pankow, Kirkland.
