Schoonover, daughter of Mrs. Walter Schoonover and the late W. H. Schoonover, died June 25 at her home in Odessa after an illness of several weeks. She was born in Ritzville on Aug. 18, 1914, and had lived in Odessa since 1922. The Schoonovers are former residents of Ritzville. Miss Schoonover is survived by her mother and a sister, Mrs. Wanda Travis of Gary, Ind. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church in Odessa with the Rev. Ray Thelan officiating. John Danekas Services Held Here Tuesday Funeral services for John P. Danekas, 67, were held Tuesday from the Emanuel Lutheran church in Ritzville. The Rev. F. J. Ahrendt, Spokane, officiated. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery, Ritzville. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Danekas passed away June 28 at Douglas. He made his home in Ritzville and had lived in this district all his life. He is survived by his wife, Henerietta, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Irma Ruth Allert and Mrs. Marian Magers, both of Ritzville; one sister, Mrs. Otto Sielaff, Ritzville; one brother, William Danekas, Ritzville; and five grandchildren. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church here. Active pallbearers were all nephews, Bob Danekas, Ray Danekas, Don Danekas, Henry Wittrock, Ted Reitz and Armond Wittrock. Services Held for Sackmann LIND -Funeral services for Jacob Sackmann, 59, were held Monday from the Zion Congregational church in Lind with the Rev. A. Kirschenmann officiating. Interment was in the Lind cemetery. He passed away at his home June 26. Sackmann had made his home in the Lind area for the past 50 years. He is survived by his wife, Anna, at the home; three sons, Clarence Sackmann of Coeur d'Alene, Ida., Elmer Sackmann of Lind and Norman Sackmann of Los Angeles; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Wahl of Lind, Mrs. Kate Schoesler of Sunnyside and Mrs. Emanuel Mielke of Lind; three brothers, John Sackmann of Sedro Wooley, Andrew Sackmann of Davenport and Adam Sackmann, Mabton and three grandchildren. He was a member of the Zion Congregational church of Lind. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 10, 1958 Mrs. Granlund Will Be Buried This Friday Funeral services for Mrs. Edwin D. Granlund will be conducted this Friday in the Colonial chapel of the Hazen and Jaeger in the Valley Funeral home at 1 p.m. The Rev. Roy E. Howes will officiate. Mrs. Granlund - the former Margaret Varnes and daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. H. Varnes of Ritzville - passed away Tuesday morning in Spokane. She was graduated from Ritzville high school in 1938 and attended the College of Puget Sound in Tacoma and took teacher training at EWCE in Cheney. Her sorority at CPS was Delpa Alpha Gamma and she was a member of the Adelphian Concert choir at the school. She was a member of the Women's Optometric Auxiliary and of the Millwood Community Presbyterian church. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Edwin Granlund; two children, David and Elizabeth; a brother, Adolph Varnes of Colfax and her parents. Burial will be in the Pines cemetery, Opportunity. Klindworth, 47, Connell Dies HATTON - Alfred Klindworth, 47, of Connell died in his sleep last Wednesday, July 2, at Oakesdale, where he had been working for the Northern Pacific. Mr. Klindworth was born in Connell Oct. 18, 1910. His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Klindworth, were pioneer farmers of the Connell area. Mr. Klindworth received all his education and graduated from high school at Connell. He was married to Miss Lillian Roberts on Jan. 19, 1944, at Memphis, Tenn. Alfred served four years in the medical corps during World War II, seeing a lot of action in the Gaudalcanal area and in Honolulu. He was a member of the Methodist church, the Knights of Pythias, and Jess Colley Post of the American Legion at Connell. Survivors include his wife, Lillian, at the home; a sister, Mrs. Henry (Esther) Scharffer of Valley; and four brothers, Edward C. of Portland, Ore., George of Vancouver, Ben of Connell and Herman of Hatton. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the Methodist church in Connell, with Rev. Tooley, assisted by the K.P.'s officiating. Interment was in the Connell cemetery with the Knights of Pythias in charge of grave services. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 17, 1958 Ex-'Tucna Man Dies Overseas WASHTUCNA - Mrs. Metta Plumb received word July 9 that her son, Frank, passed away July 5 at Daet, Camarines Norte, Philippine Islands. Frank came to Washtucna with his parents at the age of one year. Going through school here, he enlisted in the army during his last semester in high school. He served two terms with the army. He was home for the last time the summer of 1946. Plumb would have been 32 years old on Aug. 17. No details have been received by the family as of yet. Jacob Hermann Dies In Seattle Jacob Hermann died July 13 in a Seattle hospital after a two-month illness. He was born May 10, 1878, in Russia. He came to Ritzville in 1901 and remained a resident here until 1949 when he moved to Seattle. His wife Mary, who also was born in Russia, died in Seattle in November 1956. Mr. Hermann is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ralph W. Finke of Seattle and two grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Herman were held at the graveside in Pacific Lutheran cemetery in Seattle July 15, conducted by the Rev. George J. Grewenow and directed by the Forkner funeral home of Seattle. Edward Ondracek Final Rites Held Funeral services for Edward Ondracek, 64, were held Monday, July 14, in the chapel of the Danekas and Duncan funeral home. The Rev. F. J. Ahrendt of Spokane officiated. Interment was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Ondracek passed away July 11 at his home north of Ritzville. He was born March 13, 1894, in Ritzville and had made his home here all his life. He is survived by his wife, Alma, at the home; one sister, Mrs. Emma Nauditt of Prosser, and one brother, Joe Ondracek of Seattle. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 24, 1958 Florence Gering Final Rites Held Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 21, for Florence Pauline Gering, 55, in the Menno Mennonite church near Ritzville. The Rev. Lester Janzen officiated. Interment was in the Menno cemetery. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Gering died July 18 at her home, 1114 S. Division. She was born June 30, 1903, at Odessa, and had made her home in this district her entire lifetime. She is survived by her husband, Leon, at the home; four sisters, Rose Wedel of Lindsay, Ore., Ella Dyck, Hilda Gering and Lillian Jantz, all of Ritzville; two brothers, Carl Waltner of The Dalles, Ore., and Walter Waltner of Ritzville. She was a member of the Menno Mennonite church. Ex-Resident of Lind Area Dies, Seattle HATTON - Funeral services were held July 15 at 10 a.m. at the Green Lake Funeral home in Seattle for Mrs. Mable (Watson) Switzler, another early resident of Adams county. Charles P. (Dick) Switzler preceded his wife in death several years ago. Interment was beside her husband in the Carnation cemetery. Mrs. Switzler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Watson, homesteaded the farm now owned by Frank Gering. Mr. and Mrs. Switzler left Adams county in 1903 and settled at Carnation, Wash., later moving to Seattle, where she resided until her death. The city lots in Lind where the south side well is located were formerly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Switzler. Survivors include three sons, Orville of Marysville, Charles, jr., and Jack, both of Bothel; one sister, Mrs. Charles (Jennie) Andrews, Richmond Heights; three brothers, Ethalbert, Twisp, Lorenzo and Carl, both in California, and four grandchildren. Also there are three first cousins still residing in this community, Mrs. Walter Ashcraft, Alex T. Watson and Ralph C. Watson. McRae Funeral Slated July 24 Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) for William A. McRae, 83, in the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. The Rev. Pfeif will be officiating. Interment will be in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. McRae passed away in Spokane July 21. He was born in Scotland in 1875 and came to the United States in 1908 where he worked for the Union Pacific at Marengo for many years. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Bessie Timerson of Spokane, Mrs. Kate Gibbons of Seattle, Mrs. Alma Moffat of St. Maries, Ida., and Mrs. Ann Schoessler of Ritzville; three sons, David of Ritzville, Tom of Spokane, and Bill of Pomeroy; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 31, 1958 Former Resident Dies, California ARTESIA, Calif. - Mrs. Ethel W. Buehler, a former resident of Ritzville, Wash., died recently in Artesia, Calif., after a long illness. She was born in Oregon City, Ore., on March 13, 1878, as Ethel Kaufmann. She worked as a school teacher after graduation from Cheney Normal school and later was employed in the county auditor's office before her marriage. Mrs. Buehler lived in Ritzville until 1923 when she moved to Eugene, Ore. She was in that Oregon city until her husband's death in 1941. Burial services were to be held in Eugene. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Howard Stabler of Juneau, Alaska; Miss Vida Buehler of Long Beach, Calif., and Bruce Buehler, also of Long Beach, and a sister, Mrs. Mel Axtell of Boise, Ida. John Benzel Dies In East, Services Here Funeral services were held for John F. Benzel, 80, of Scottsbluff, Neb., Tuesday from the Philadelphia Congregational church. The Rev. Herbert C. Haemmelmann officiated. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Benzel died July 24 in a Scottsbluff hospital. He was born July 24, 1878, at Kolb, Russia, where he married Miss Elizabeth Reiber in 1899. They came to the United States in 1913 and lived in Minatare, Neb., for a year before moving to Ritzville where he resided until 1957 when he returned to Scottsbluff. Mrs. Elizabeth Benzel preceded him in death in January of 1931. He married Anna Lesser on May 16, 1957, at Scottsbluff. He is survived by his wife, Anna; two daughters, Mrs. Nick Schafer and Mrs. Elmer Heimbigner, both of Ritzville; five sons, Fred, jr., of Ritzville, Carl of Harrington, Jake and Alex of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Rheiny of Seattle; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He had been a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church before moving from Ritzville and had been active in church affairs in the community. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 7, 1958 Milda Schafer Funeral Held Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, for Milda Schafer from the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. The Rev. R. W. Rieger officiated. Interment was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mrs. Schafer died Aug. 3 at her home seven miles west of Ritzville. She was born April 1, 1892, in Washington and lived all her life in this area. Mrs. Schafer is survived by her husband, Henry C. Schafer, at the home; one daughter, Mrs. Aaron Braun of Ritzville; one son, Ivan Schafer of Ritzville; three sisters, Mrs. C. L. Schaefer, Post Falls, Ida.; Lydia Nauditt, Ritzville, Katie Schoessler, Astoria, Ore.; four brothers, Joe Bastron, Ritzville, Art Bastron, Martin Bastron, Samuel Bastron, all of Walla Walla; and six grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity Methodist church in Ritzville. Ritzville Native Dies In Mishap Funeral services for Mayland E. Kuehl of St. John, a native of Ritzville, were held Monday at St. John. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery under the direction of a Spokane funeral home. Kuehl was killed last week when a bus he was driving west was involved in a collision with a truck near Sturgis, S.D. He was delivering a bus to Spokane. He was born at Ritzville in 1905, went to Cheney with his parents in 1906, went to school there and lived in Cheney for some time before moving to St. John where he was employed in the St. John school system. Kuehl is survived by his wife, Edna, and four children at the home in St. John, Edwin, Henry, Shirley and Donna, and two married daughters, Mrs. Joanne Reynolds of Spokane and Mrs. Lydia Ford of St. John; his father, Henry M. Kuehl of Spokane and two brothers, Emmett D. Kuehl of Millwood and Francis Kuehl of Cheney. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 14, 1958 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 21, 1958 Kechter Funeral Held Recently Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 13, from the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel for Carl Kechter, who passed away Aug. 10 in Spokane. The Rev. F. J. Ahrendt of Spokane officiated. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Pauline, at the home; one daughter, Mrs. Don Wright and one grandson. Kechter was a member of C. J. Newland American Legion post in Ritzville. He is a former resident of Ritzville and had moved to Spokane about eight months ago. News of Death Received by Folk CUNNINGHAM - Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Damon of the recent death of her sister, Mrs. Raymond Gray (Agnes Kelley), a former resident of Cunningham. Mrs. Gray passed away at her home in Tacoma. Survivors include her husband, Raymond, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Herman Fuchs and Mrs. Arthur Wells, and eight grandchildren, all of Tacoma; three sisters, Frances Logan and Mary Logan of Seattle, Mrs. Fred Damon of Cunningham and a step-sister, Mrs. Anna Higgins of Spokane. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 28, 1958 Larry McKenzie Dies; Burial In Spokane Requiem mass was said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for Larry Robert McKenzie, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McKenzie of Ritzville. The Rev. Joseph Pash officiated. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Spokane. He is survived by his parents at the home; one sister, Deidre; one grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude McKenzie, Washtucna; one grandfather, Tim Brown of Spokane. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 4, 1958 Allen McKenzie Dies In Spokane SPOKANE - Allen McKenzie, a son-in-law of Mrs. Annine Harder of Ritzville and a frequent visitor in that city, died of an apparent heart attack last weekend while fighting fire at Liberty Lake. According to reports in Spokane McKenzie had built a fire near a new home he was building at Liberty Lake and the blaze had got away from him. Funeral services were held Tuesday and burial took place the same day in Spokane. Survivors include his wife, Anna, and several aunts and uncles in Spokane. Former Nurse In City Dies WENATCHEE - Miss Ottilia Sprecker, 62, of Wenatchee and formerly a public health nurse in Adams county, died recently following a brief illness. Miss Sprecker came to Ritzville about 1933 and left in August of 1943. She was born in Parkston, S.D., on Sept. 1, 1895. She came to Quincy, Wash., in 1903 and in 1913 entered nurses training at Milwaukie, Wisc. Later Miss Sprecker studied at Rochester, Pa. In 1924 the former Adams county resident went to Spokane and took post gradute work at Sacred Heart hospital. She served as public health nurse for Pacific county as well as Adams county before going to Wenatchee. For the last 10 years she had been anesthetist in the Deaconess hospital in Wenatchee. Surviving are two brothers, Emanuel Schultz of Quincy and G. D. Schultz of Omak, and one sister, Mrs. Pauline Scheuchner of Hollywood, Calif. Martin T. Little Dies, California FRESNO, Calif. - Martin Thomas Little, who was born in Washtucna, Wash., on Feb. 29, 1902, died in Fresno, Calif., Aug. 18, 1958. He was a tire salesman for LeMoss and Smith Rubber company in Fresno at the time of his death. Services were conducted the morning of Aug. 22 at the Palm Funeral home in Fresno followed by private cremation in the Chapel of the Light. Survivors include his wife, Ann; two sons, Don and Richard; one daughter, Mrs. Corrine Gustafason, all of Fresno; three brothers, Walter Lyndle and Herschel, all of Washtunca, and one sister, Sue Johnston of Lind, Wash. Mr. Little moved to Fresno about 1920. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 11, 1958 Ex-Resident Dies, Spokane Funeral services were held last Thursday morning at Shaw and Sons funeral home in Yakima for Mrs. Bertha Gust Schwarzwalter, 70, who passed away Aug. 31 in Spokane. Mrs. Schwarzwalter was born in Koom, South Russia, on Dec. 17, 1887. She came to the United States with her parents when she was 13 years old. They settled at Warden. Four years later she was married to Simon Gust. Six children were born to them while farming in the Warden, Lind and Ritzville areas. Two boys and Gust preceded her in death. In 1940 she moved to Yakima and there married Fred Schwarzwalter. They made their home in Cowiche before returning to Yakima when he passed away in 1952. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Palmer of Spokane and Mrs. Emma Carpenter of Seattle; two sons, Alexander Gust of Washtucna and Alfred Gust of Ritzville; one sister, Mrs. Marie Suko of Warden; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Burial and graveside services were held last Thursday afternoon at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery with the Rev. H. C. Haemmelmann officiating. John King Dies At Age of 60 Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday for John D. King, 60, from the Danekas and Duncan funeral home chapel. The Rev. R. W. Rieger officiated. Interment was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. King passed away last Thursday at a local hospital. He had made his home in Ritzville. Survivors include his wife, Lottie, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Albert Kulm of Ritzville and Mrs. Edward Kulm of Lind; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Cary of Sunnyside, Mrs. Edith Lloyd of Portland and Mrs. Mabie Baurbonnie of Spokane; one brother, Tom King, Tempe, Ariz. He was a member of the Ritzville Aerie of Eagles and Zion Congregational church. Donald J. Haase Last Rites Held The Danekas and Duncan chapel was the scene Wednesday at 2 p.m. for the funeral of Donald J. Haase, 20, of Route 2, Ritzville. The Rev. Robert Kennan and Rev. Anderson officiated. Interment was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Haase died Sunday at Coffee Pot lake in Lincoln county. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Haase, at the home; one sister, Beverly, at home; two brothers, Pat Haase, Ritzville, Pfc. Mike Haase with the army at Fort Lewis. He was a member of the Ralston Grange and the Ralston church. He also played baseball for the Ritzville Wonders. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 18, 1958 Charles Phillips Dies in Spokane WASHTUCNA - Funeral services were held last Saturday at the Riplinger funeral home in Spokane for Charles (Lum) Phillips, 84, a former resident of Washtucna. Burial was in the cemetery at Lind. He and Mrs. Phillips were married Sept. 6, 1896, and two years ago they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married in Missouri. Mrs. Phillips now is living in Spokane. Besides his widow, Marie, Mr. Phillips is survived by a son, Victor; a grandson and a granddaughter in Wyoming. A daughter preceded him in death a number of years ago. Mabel Marion Dies, Seattle HATTON - Mrs. Mabel Marion, 85, of Seattle, former of Hatton, died in Seattle last Friday, according to word received here. Rosary was said Sunday evening in the Arthur D. Wright and Son chapel and requiem mass was held Monday morning in St. Anne's church. Mrs. Marion was born in Detroit, Mich., and went to Seattle at the age of 17. She lived in Hatton with her husband, the late Dr. A. V. Marion, for about 20 years. He was physician and surgeon and served such a wide area that he maintained two teams of horses to take him on calls before he and Mrs. Marion bought their first auto. Mrs. Marion returned to Seattle after his death 35 years ago. She was a member of Court Juniper Serra No. 220, Catholic Daughters of America, at San Mateo, Calif. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. L. J. (Helen) Hall of Seattle; a son, Alfred M. Marion of Burlingame, Calif.; four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Son Of Hatton Resident Dies In California HATTON - Col. James A. McKinney, USAF, of Redlands, Calif., a West Point graduate who spent his early school days in Walla Walla and was graduated from Wa-Hi in 1937, died last Friday in the San Diego Naval hospital of cancer of the lungs. Final military honors were accorded in a service Wednesay morning, with interment in Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in San Diego. Colonel McKinney, whose interest in a military life, dated back to his Wa-Hi days where he was a lieutenant colonel of ROTC unit and active in the national guard, played football both in high school days and at the military academy. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled at Willamette university and was appointed to the academy through his affiliation with the national guard. He was in the first class of West Point to be graduated under the accelerated training program of World War II days, receiving his commission in January of 1942. He flew bomber missions from England over Germany throughout the war and was later stationed in Germany in post-war days. Returning to the states, he was engaged in a training program at Texas Air fields for a time, and also at the Pentagon in Washington. In the late 40s after his return from Germany, he spent several months in Letterman's General hospital in San Francisco for treatment of cancer in the area of the throat. The condition was arrested and he was discharged to resume his career in the air force. He was engaged in a program of inspection of aircraft manufacturing plants which took him to all sections of the country. His last official assignment as commandant of an air force base at Rabat, Morocco. It was from there, shortly after Christmas, 1957, that he was flown back to the states and admitted to the San Diego hospital for treatment of cancer which had developed in the lungs. He is survived by his wife, Wanda, who is at the family home in Redlands; a daughter, Barbara; a son, Buddy; his mother, Mrs. Mary Ashcraft of Seattle; his father, R. E. McKinney of Kahlotus; and a brother, Robert McKinney of Inchelium, Wash. The fahter, R. E. "Mac" McKinney is well-known in this community having made his home with the Ralph Watson the past 30 years. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 25, 1958 Mary Gross Dies At Hospital Here Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Philadelphia Congregational church for Mrs. Mary Gross, a long-time resident of Ritzville. Mrs. Gross passed away at the Adams County Memorial hospital at the age of 79. The Rev. Herbert C. Haemmelmann officiated. Interment was in Saloma cemetery near Ritzville. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ida Wahl of Ritzville, and Miss Olga Gross at the home; one son, Reuben Gross also at the home; and one sister, Mrs. Amelia Schultz of Ritzville. She was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church and the Ladies Aid of that church.
