Bruihl Service Held Funeral services were held Dec. 30 from Trinity Methodist church for Cora May Bruihl of Ritzville. Mrs. Bruihl passed away Dec. 27 in a Kennewick hospital after a lingering illness. Dr. Alfred Carter officiated. Interment was in the Winona cemetery. Danekas and Duncan funeral home was in charge of arrangements. She was born Jan. 19, 1874, in Shawnee, Kans., as Cora May Honn. She came to Washington in 1899 and then married William Benton Bruihl, an early homesteader in the Benge area. She had been a resident of Adams county for 58 years and of Ritzville for the past 15 years. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary B. Roberts of Kennewick and Mrs. Ruth Case of Spokane; two sons, Ralph Bruihl of Chatteroy and Howard Bruihl of Ritzville, and nine grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 8, 1959 Fred A. Lewis Dies; Once Lived In City Mrs. L. D. Emerson recently has received word of the death of her brother, Fred A. Lewis. Lewis, a Ritzville born former resident, passed away in Los Angeles Dec. 26. Ex-Cunningham Resident Dies CUNNINGHAM - Raymond Gray, 72, of Tacoma and a former resident of Cunningham, died recently at a Tacoma hospital following a lingering illness. He was an old time resident of Cunningham while he was employed as an engineer for the Northern Pacific railway. He was married to the former Agnes Kelley, a sister of Mrs. Fred Damon, in 1909. She preceded him in death by only a few months, having died August 1958 of a heart attack. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Herman Fuchs and Mrs. Arthur Wells, both of Tacoma; a brother in Culver City, Calif.; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 22, 1959 George Koch Service Held Funeral services for George J. Koch, 90, a long-time resident of Adams county, were held Saturday afternoon at the Danekas funeral home with the Rev. Donald Beake officiating. Interment was in the Ritzville cemetery. Mr. Koch died last Thursday at Adams County Memorial hospital after an illness of about 10 months. He was born at Kolb, Russia, on Nov. 24, 1868. The family came to America in 1886 when Mr. Koch was 18 years old. They lived first in Nebraska for one year and then moved west of homestead. This was in Bauer's coulee between Ritzville and Lind. Molly Hartwig and Mr. Koch were married in Ritzville on June 6, 1895, and to them were born seven children. Of these George, Henry and Molly Koch Becker preceded him in death. His wife passed away in 1908. Survivors are one son, Robert Koch of Marengo; three daughters, Mrs. Amelia McMartin of Willows, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Nelson and Mrs. Pauline Rushmeier, both of Lind; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Koch and Jacob Koch, both of Prineville, Ore., and two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Gipson of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Martha Murray of Chula Vista, Calif. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, January 29, 1959 W. O. Meyer Dies, Seattle Funeral services for Walter O. Meyer, 45, of Ritzville, who died in a Seattle hospital Tuesday, will be held from Trinity Methodist church at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Alfred Carter, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Survivors are his wife, Mary, at the home; and two brothers, Martin Meyer and Max Meyer, both of Ritzville. He was a member of Trinity Methodist church. Mr. Meyer was re-elected last November to serve his fourth term as Adams county assessor. He first was elected in November 1946 and took office in January 1947. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 5, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 12, 1959 Kurth Services Held on Tuesday Funeral services for Louis Kurth were held Monday afternoon from the Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. Albert Wagner officiating. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery in Ritzville. Danekas Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Kurth was born June 1, 1885, in Rochester, Minn., a son of John and Minna Kurth. He passed away Friday morning at Adams County Memorial hospital following a stroke. Kurth was self-employed in the carpenter business. Survivors include his wife, Edith, at the home; one brother, Reinhold in Britten, S. Dak., and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Lutheran church. 'Tucna Pioneer Services Held Here Tuesday WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for William Snyder, an early settler of Adams county, who passed away Friday, Feb. 6, at his home in Washtucna, were held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Washtucna Community church. The Rev. William Woodworth conducted the rites. Mr. Snyder was laid to rest beside his wife, Hattie, who preceded him in death in July 1943. Survivors are two sons, Ralph W. Snyder and W. E. Snyder, both of Washtucna, seven grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and of the El Katiff Shrine. It was in 1903 that Mr. Snyder of Ritzville opened his half-block long general merchandise store - Washtucna's largest business house until it burned 20 years later. The next year he moved to Washtucna to operate the business personally. Irrigation was the big talk around the town in those days and Mr. Snyder was by no means the only enthusiast. But he was one of the earliest, his interest in irrigating parts of the county extending back to the 90s when he lived in Ritzville. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 19, 1959 Van Buren Rites Slated Thursday At Local Church Funeral services for Mrs. Freiderike Van Buren will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, from the Emanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Albert Wagner officiating. Interment will be in the Ritzville cemetery. Mrs. Van Buren was born March 23, 1878, in Germany. She passed away at a Cheney nursing home on Feb. 16. She was a member of the Lutheran church. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Marie Buhlke, Bousman, Wis.; Mrs. Clara Denny, Medical Lake; Mrs. Emma Stockman, Ritzville; Mrs. Anna Baker, Walla Walla; Mrs. Jean Knas, Waukesha, Wis.; six sons, Karl Van Buren, Lewiston; Amiel Van Buren, Walla Walla; Otto Van Buren, Davenport; Alfred and Ben Van Buren, both of Ritzville and Walter Van Buren, Pasco. Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. W. A. Arlt and Mrs. Jake Eckhardt, Ritzville, and Mrs. John Luiten of Spokane; three brothers, Charles Schwerin of Ritzville, Paul Schwerin, Kettle Falls, and Fred Schwerin of Spokane; 28 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, February 26, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 5, 1959 Maas Service Due Saturday; Dies At Age 90 Funeral services for Eberhard Maas, 90, a former Spokane tailor, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from the chapel of the Danekas funeral home with the Rev. R. W. Rieger officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Cross cemetery in Spokane. A rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel. Mr. Maas died at Adams County Memorial hospital Monday after a brief illness. He was born in Gendrich on the Rhine, Germany, on Dec. 1, 1868. He served his apprenticeship in the tailor trade in Crefield, Germany, and also was in various units of the armed forces. Married in 1893 to Teresia Albert of Cologne, the couple came to this country in 1910 with their three sons and established a tailor shop in Spokane. He had been admitted to the master's guild of tailors in 1893 at Cologne. Mr. Maas retired from business at the age of 75, and then he moved to the family ranch at Nine Mile Falls. In April of 1956 he came to Ritzville to live. Surviving are three sons, Frank H. Maas of El Paso, Texas; Hubert E. Maas of Ritzville, and Johannes A. Maas of Berkley Springs, W. Va.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Sons of Hermann, lodge no. 9 of Spokane. Joe Olson Dies; Former Resident Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, in Spokane for N. J. "Joe" Olson, who passed away Feb. 25 after a lingering illness. Burial was in Fairmont Memorial park. Mr. Olson was born in Missouri on June 18, 1877, and came to Washington from Iowa with his parents in 1884. They settled on a homestead eight and one-half miles north and east of Ritzville, which Mr. Olson still owned at the time of his death. He was a charter member of Marcellus Grange. He had resided in Spokane for a number of years and with his nephew, Russell Griffith, for the past year and a half. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Helen Griffith, Spokane; Mrs. Nelle Harris of Seattle; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edith Olson, Spokane; three nieces and six nephews. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 12, 1959 Former Area Teacher Dies HATTON - Attending funeral services for Mrs. Alice Olds, 74, in Kennewick Saturday afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ashcraft, Mrs. Alex E. Watson and Ralph Watson. In the early days, Mrs. Olds taught school at Ringold, Eltopia and Reeder schools. The latter was located on the Kahlotus-Connell road near the Floyd Hudlow residence. She and her husband, Lee, were long-time residents in Connell until his death May 29, 1946. Several years ago, while living with a niece in Idaho, Mrs. Olds fell, breaking her hip and had been confined to a wheel chair since the accident. In the fall of 1957 she was moved to the Pioneer nursing home in Kennewick where she lived until her sudden and unexpected death. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, Margaret Wadsworth Chapter No. 225, OES at Lind, Connell Grange and Euphemia Rebekah Lodge No. 225 at Connell. She is survived by one brother, Quinn Hamby at Richland, a sister in Tennessee and five stepchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 19, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, March 26, 1959 Claude Berry Dies; Lived Here for Year WALLA WALLA - Funeral services for Claude Marion Berry of Retsil, father of Mrs. Frank Averill of Ritzville, were held Monday. He died at Retsil last Thursday. Mr. Berry had lived in Ritzville for about a year not long ago. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American war.
