The Rev. R. W. Rieger officiated. Interment followed at the Ritzville cemetery. Schaefer died in the Deaconess hospital in Spokane after a lingering illness. He was 69 years old. He was born in Bickleton Feb. 21, 1890, and had lived in the Ritzville area for 58 years. He had farmed near here before retiring. Survivors include his wife, Dora; two children, Mrs. Mildred Anderson and Everett Schaefer, both of Ritzville; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Pinnow and Mrs. Kate Heinemann, both of Ritzville; two brothers, Edwin Schaefer of Ritzville and Conrad Schaefer of Post Falls, Ida.; and five grandchildren. He was a member of Zion Congregational church. Rites Today for A. Miller Funeral services will be held for Alex A. Miller at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Emanuel Lutheran church. The Rev. Albert Wagner will officiate. Interment will follow at the Lutheran cemetery. Miller died in a Spokane nursing home at the age of 73 years. He had been living in Spokane for the last three years with his sister and had been in the nursing home for three weeks. Miller was born at Kolb, Russia, Dec. 14, 1885, and had lived in Ritzville and the United States for 70 years. His wife, Molly, died Aug. 16, 1951. Miller is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Rose Myers of Pasco; a son, Ted Miller of Ritzville; a sister, Mrs. Fred Vevea of Opportunity; two brothers, George Miller of Ritzville and Peter Miller of Coeur d'Alene; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 9, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 16, 1959 Services Held for m. Labes LIND - Funeral services were held Monday for Mary Justine Labes, wife of Charles Labes, at the Good Hope Lutheran church. Interment followed at the Lind cemetery. The Rev. Donald Beake officiated. Mrs. Labes, 73, died in Portland, Ore., July 10. She had been visiting two sons since Wednesday. Mrs. Labes was born in Russia Aug. 6, 1885. She had lived in Lind for 62 years after coming to the United States. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Emma Meske of Spokane; four sons, Raymond and Benjamin, both of Portland, Harry of Ritzville and Charles, jr., of Lind; five sisters, Mrs. Rose Weiss of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Lydia Gust of Odessa, Mrs. Lena Radach, Mt. View, Calif., Mrs. Emma Stevens of Seattle and Mrs. Martha Sherman of The Dalles, Ore. Three brothers, Chris and Edwin Jeske of Warden and Charles Jeske of Spokane, also survive. Mrs. Labes had four grandchildren. She was a member of Good Hope Lutheran church. Services Held for M. Brown WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Mrs. Maude Clare Brown were held Tuesday, July 14, at 10 a.m. in the Memorial chapel of the Jerue funeral home in Cheney. Rev. J. William Woodworth of Washtucna officiated. Graveside services were held at 12 noon in the Endicott cemetery at Endicott. Clare Maude Van Dyke, daughter of Joseph Wesley and Gertrude Van Dyke, was born April 25, 1882, in Polk county, Wis. She died at the Cheney nursing home July 10. At the age of four, Clare came west with her parents to Colfax and lived in the vicinity as a girl. She married James Albert Brown Dec. 24, 1901. In Colfax six children were born to this home. Following her husband's early death, Mrs. Brown struggled to keep her home together and not only raised her children but took her granddaughter, now Mrs. Lonie Christenson, to raise as her own child. She is survived by her children, Albert Brown of Spokane, Frank Brown of Washtucna, Floyd Brown of Spokane, Mrs. Jauneta Olson of Newport, Mrs. Sereta Rudolph, Bill Brown, Corena, Calif.; two brothers, Vernon and Cortland Van Dyke; a sister, Mrs. Eva Dunn and 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brown lived in Washtucna for a while before going to Cheney. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 23, 1959 Services Held for Mrs. Ramm Funeral services for Mary E. Ramm were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Christ Lutheran church in Odessa with the Rev. Warner J. Fritz officiating. Interment was in the Odessa cemetery. Mrs. Ramm's home was in Odessa and she is survived by seven daughters, Mrs. Sam Braun, Mrs. Helen Martin, Mrs. Frances Ramm, Mrs. Viola Derr, all of Odessa; Mrs. Laura Medlin, Rialto, Calif., Mrs. Marie Braun, Clayton, Wash., and Mrs. Marjorie Erickson, Marysville, Wash. Other survivors include 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dave Gier and Chris Gier, both Odessa, George Gier, Davenport; and three sisters, Mrs. Lena Stroh and Mrs. Hanna Heimbigner, both of Odessa and Mrs. Edith Bock, Spokane. Former City Resident Dies Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Bartholomew, 44, a Seattle teacher for 23 years and former Ritzville resident, died July 18 in a Seattle hospital. She had been in ill health five years. Memorial services were held Tuesday in the Maple Leaf Lutheran church. Cremation followed. Mrs. Bartholomew taught at John Rogers elementary school until illness forced her to retire last February. She went to Seattle in 1936 and had taught in Seattle public school and at the Helen Bush school. Mrs. Bartholomew was born in Laurel, Mont. She was graduated from Ritzville high school where her father, The Rev. Herman Nuetzmann, was pastor of the Philadelphia Congregational church. Mrs. Bartholomew attended Eastern Washington College of Education at Cheney and did graduate work at the University of Washington. Several years ago she was named as outstanding Seattle teacher. Mrs. Bartholomew had been an avid skier many years. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood and the Maple Leaf Lutheran church. Survivors are her husband, W. Laurence; two sons, Laurence Walter and Daniel March Bartholomew; and a daughter, Marla Alice Bartholomew, all of Seattle; her parents in Elk Grove, Calif.; four brothers, Wilbert E., Benno and Herbert, all of Seattle, and Elmer Nuetzmann, San Francisco, Calif.; five sisters, Mrs. Elfreda Bauer, Suquamish, Mrs. Lydia Hufnagel, Hansville, Mrs. Esther West, Washtucna, Mrs. Anita Proffitt, South Bend, and Mrs. Ellen Feickert, Elk Grove. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 30, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 6, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 13, 1959 Services Held for Lee Roy Garrett WASHTUCNA - Mrs. Verda Bison attended the funeral services for Lee Roy Garrett, ex-marshall of Kahlotus, in Pasco Monday, Aug. 3. Services were held at the Bruce Lee funeral home in Pasco. Death was caused by a heart attack. He was a former resident of Washtucna. County Pioneer Dies Suddenly at Ritzville Home Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 13, for one of the county pioneers, Mrs. Christina Pflugrath, 73, in the Philadelphia Congregational church. The Rev. Herbert Haemmelmann officiated. Interment followed at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. She and her husband, Emanuel, spent the weekend with a daughter, Mrs. Rose Vaughn, at Pendleton, Ore., and had stopped at their son's farm south of Ritzville for a visit. Mrs. Pflugrath died suddenly Monday afternoon after returning home. She was born June 18, 1866, in Rumania and came to the United States when she was 10 months old. She lived in South Dakota until she was about 18 years old. After Mrs. Pflugrath and her husband were married, they came to the Ritzville area in about 1906. They lived near Dusty for several years and then came to Ritzville where they farmed near Paha. They retired and moved to town in 1937. Mrs. Pflugrath is survived by her husband, Emanuel; three daughters, Mrs. Emelia Fode, Lind, Mrs. Anne Sillett, White Rock, B.C., Mrs. Rose Vaughn, Pendleton, Ore.; one son, Albert of Ritzville; three sisters, Mrs. J. N. Sauer, Portland, Mrs. Pauline Haase, Odessa, Mrs. Jake Ottmar, Ritzville; four brothers, Jake Stueckle, Waitsburg, Henry and Art Stueckle, Colfax, Chris Stueckle, LaCrosse; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church, president of the senior ladies' aid of the church and a member of the hospital auxiliary. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 20, 1959 Services Held for L. Allert Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 19, for Louis Allert, who had lived in the Ritzville area for 59 years. The Rev. Alfred Carter officiated at the Danekas funeral chapel. Interment followed at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Allert was a retired wheat farmer and was born in Lincoln, Neb. He moved to the Ritzville area 59 years ago. He died at the Adams County Memorial hospital Aug. 16. He is survived by his wife, Mamie; two daughters, Mrs. Beverly White, Ellensburg, and Miss Vivian Allert, at the home; one son, Delbert, Ritzville; his mother, Mrs. Mary Allert, Ritzville; one sister, Gertrude Coleman, Ritzville; six brothers, Cornelius, Walter and Henry all of Ritzville, Fritz, Rosalia, William, Benge, and John, Seattle; and one grandchild. Allert was a member of the Trinity Methodist church and the IOOF lodge in Ritzville and the EPOE No. 228 in Spokane. J. I Farrier Rites Monday Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 17, for James I. Farrier in the Community church at Sprague. The Rev. Robert Parker officiated. Interment followed at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Farrier died Aug. 14 at the age of 57 years. He was born July 9, 1902, in Ritzville and was the son of the late J. I. and Alice Farrier, pioneer family of Ritzville. He had lived in Sprague for the last 39 years. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Gene Lobe, Odessa, and Mrs. Everett Oylear, Rapid City, S.D.; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Herring, Palouse, and Mrs. W. H. Proctor, Ritzville; one brother, Ted R. Farrier, Spokane; and seven grandchildren. Farrier was a member of the Community church, the Sprague Lions club and the Crab Creek Grange. Danekas funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 27, 1959 William J. Ovens Dies In South Word has been received that William James Ovens, 85, died last Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. A. Benner, Laurens, S.C. A native of Prince Edward county, Ontario, Canada, he lived near Hooper from 1895 until 1953 where he was a cattle rancher. He moved to Laurens in 1953. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Survivors besides Mrs. Benner are two other daughters, Mrs. Howard Snyder of San Bernardino, Calif., and Mrs. Robert Luft of Temple City, Calif.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Area Resident Dies Yesterday Ernst von Olnhausen, 70, who has lived in the Ritzville area since he was 19 years old, died at the Adams County hospital yesterday morning. He was taken to the hospital two weeks ago after a stroke. Funeral services will be held in the Danekas funeral chapel later this week pending word from his son who is visiting in Germany. von Olnhausen was born in Wurtenburg, Germany, Feb. 23, 1889. He came to the Odessa area to live with his sister, Mrs. Jacob Reihs when he was 19 years old. He married May Lydia Gessner in 1912 and they moved to a farm four and one-half miles southwest of Ritzville on his father-in-law's place. He quit farming and worked at the Ritzville Flouring Mill for 30 years. He retired about five years ago and moved to Ritzville. Mrs. von Olnhausen died in April 1957. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Busch, Marengo, and Mrs. Mary Nissen, Ritzville; two sons, Ernst, jr., Moses Lake, and Vern, Ritzville; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Reihs, Almira, and Mrs. Anna Wagner, Wurtenburg, Germany; one brother, Frederick, Wurtenburg; and 12 grandchildren. He was a member of the Lutheran church and the Modern Woodmen. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 3, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 10, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 17, 1959 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 24, 1959 Funeral Service Held Sept. 16 for Washtucna Area Pioneer WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for John Paul Helme were held Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Washtucna Community church. Two ministers, who had served the church in recent years, assisted Rev. William Woodworth. They were Rev. A. K. Walborn and Rev. Russell Booher, both of Spokane. Those serving as pallbearers were Lester Snyder, Ralph S. Snyder, F. R. West, jr., John Klee, Fred Beckner, all of Washtucna, and Frank Catching of Huntington Beach, Calif. The elders of the church served as honorary pallbearers. They were John Gray, Joe Gray, Mason Ray, Floyd Cameron, Elmer Lee, Virgil Sutton, Jim Woodyard, Amos Allen, all of Washtucna, and Levi Sutton of Spokane. Organ music was played by Mrs. F. R. West, jr. Mrs William Woodworth was soloist. Seated in a body were the members of the Masonic lodge of Washtucna. Paul wore the Masonic white leather apron about his waist. Concluding the service at the Washtucna church, the American Legion, dressed in uniforms, fired a volley and sounded taps. John Paul Helme, son of Elmer and Molly Helme, was born Nov. 15, 1895, in Washtucna. He passed away in Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane, Sept. 13, at the age of 63 years. Helme moved to California at the age of six years, where he completed his schooling. He entered military service in 1917 and served as band sergeant in the thirty-fourth regiment of field artillary in France. He was discharged at Fort Lewis in April, 1919. On Oct. 21, 1919, he was united in marriage to Bessie Griffith and they made their home where Paul has farmed for 40 years. He was a member of the Washtucna Christian church and following the merger, a member of the Washtucna Community church, where he was an elder at the time of his death. Helme was a member of Rimrock Grange, where he has been a past master, the Masonic lodge, the Washtucna Grain Growers and the American Legion. He was chosen soil conservation farmer of the year for his district in 1958. Surviving him are his wife, Bessie; one daughter, Louise Kinch, one son, Gene; one brother, Barney; and four grandchildren. Former Resident Passes Sunday at Oregon Home Guy C. Stafford, longtime resident of the Ralston area, died at his home in Aloha, Ore., Saturday, Sept. 19. Funeral services were held in the Little church chapel, Beaverton, Ore. Graveside services were conducted by the Masons lodge of Beaverton in the Hubbard, Ore., cemetery. Stafford is survived by his wife, Goldie, at the home; two sons, Marion E., Astoria, Ore., and William Guy, Aloha; five grandchildren and one great- granddaughter. Stafford was born Sept. 23, 1877, in Athena, Ore., where he grew up. He was married to Goldie Eaton at Fairfield, Oct. 21, 1900. He farmed near Ralston from 1917 until 1929. In 1926, he was employed as grain buyer and warehouse manager by the Seattle Grain company, which was later bought by Centennial Mills, Inc., at Ralston where the family lived until 1945. He was then transferred to Coulee City. Stafford retired in 1949 and made his home in Oregon. He was active in community life while a resident of Adams county. He was a charter member of the Ralston Grange, a member of the Ralston district school board, a member of the Ralston Community church, past master of the Ritzville Masonic lodge, and past master of the Pomona Grange. Mr. and Mrs. Stafford returned to Ralston to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary in October, 1950.
