Starring of Cunningham, 20, died in the crash of a truck and trailer with a Union Pacific train Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. The crash occurred 4.8 miles east of Sprague on the Downs Lake road. According to Trooper Lloyd Danielson the tractor and trailer slowed to about 10 miles per hour as it approached the rail crossing. Train crewmen said, though, that is kept moving onto the crossing. Heavy wet snow was falling, the wind was blowing and visibility were limited. The train was a three-car unit No. 20 which makes the UP route from Spokane to Hinkle, Ore. It was traveling 60 miles per hour when at 200 feet before the crossing the engineer applied the brakes, Danielson said the trainmen told him. The impact tore the trailer loose from the tractor and threw it into a bank. It carried the tractor 288 rail ties, or about 500 feet. First the motor fell out, then the smashed cab was dropped. The tractor's undercarriage was carried until the train stopped. The trainmen told the state trooper the engineer's whistle was blowing constantly. They could only sumise the truck's driver never saw the short train. The train struck the cab of the tractor broadside, Danielson said. The truck and trailer were traveling south. The trailer was of open bin type and was empty. Starring was alone in the rig. Damage estimated at $8,000 was done to the front and left side of the mail car, immediately behind the engine.
