Goodenough, Sunday, March 29. He was a former resident on Michigan Prairie and has lived in Spokane for 45 years. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. A. J. (Maude) Railsback; three stepchildren, Mrs. J. W. (Quetta) Peters, Mrs. Frank (Eulah) Jansen and LaVerne Summers, all of Spokane and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gehres went to Spokane Monday morning and will stay with her mother, Mrs. Railsback, a few days. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 9, 1964 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 16, 1964 Mrs. Ed Dick Funeral Held on Wednesday Mrs. Katherine M. Dick died here at the age of 87 Monday. She had been ill the past three and a half months and had been a resident of Hillcrest manor the past two and a half years. Funeral services were held in the Zion Congregational church at Lind Wednesday morning. Burial was in Normal Hill cemetery at Lewiston, Ida. Katherine Smith was born Sept. 27, 1876, at Portland, Ore., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith. She was married in 1901 at Portland to Ed C. Dick. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Hammond of Lind, and three sons, Donald Dick of Madison, Wisc., Charles Dick of Bellevue, and Coleman Dick of Belvedere. There are eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dick lived at Lewiston for 45 years. She lived at Lind for a period of 16 months. The Rev. George W. Swank conducted the rites at the Lewiston cemetery. Pallbearers were Ernest Heider, Tenny Tenneson, Dean McDowell, Leonard Koepp, Loyd Atkerson and Walt Krehbiel. A quartet of Lind people sang at the funeral, Mrs. Otto Lobe, Mrs. R. D. Sauer, Emil Sackmann and Reinhold Sackmann. Organ accompanist was Mrs. Reinhold Sackmann. Anna Ricker Laid to Rest on Wednesday Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Rieker, an Adams county resident for 65 years, died here Sunday. Funeral services were held at the Philadelphia Congregational church Wednesday afternoon. She was 86 years of age. The deceased was born Feb. 3, 1878, in Kolb, Russia. She is survived by two daughers, Mrs. Edward Siegel of Ritzville and Mrs. Kenneth Farrier of Everett. Also surviving are three stepdaughters, Mrs. Elmer Luiten of Cheney, Mrs. Laura Hansen of Bishop, Calif., and Mrs. Wayne Rosenoff of Monterey, Calif. Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive. Mrs. Rieker was a charter member of the Philadelphia Congregational church and of its senior ladies aid. The Rev. H. C. Haemmelmann conducted the funeral service. A quartet, Jake and Carl Hoefel, Elmer Heimbigner and the Rev. Mr. Haemmelmann, sang "Face to Face," and "Rock of Ages." Their accompanist was Mrs. Haemmelmann. Pallbearers were Arthur Daniel, Lawrence and Solly Stromberger, Ralph Schafer and Norman Krause. Interment was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 23, 1964 Death Takes Four-Year-Old Miss Linda Diane Higby, four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Higby of Billings, Mont., died suddenly April 8. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 11. She was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fickle of Ritzville. Linda had a slight kidney infection. She was taken to the hospital for tests on Tuesday and died suddenly the next day. She is survived by her father, Harvey, and mother Alma; a sister, Angela; a half brother, Dennis Bonar, and three half sisters, Paula, Kay and Sandra Bonar. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fickle returned home the past weekend after spending the past 10 days there. Also attending the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fickle of Spokane. Mrs. Johnston Service Held Here Monday Funeral services for Mrs. Ella May Johnston were conducted Monday afternoon at the Danekas Funeral chapel. Mrs. Johnston died Friday of last week at Hillcrest manor in Ritzville. She would have been 83 years of age in June. She was born Ella May Barry on June 24, 1881, at Marshalltown, Ia. The family moved from Iowa to Frontier county, Neb. Her mother was the oldest settler of that area. Mrs. Johnston was married to Charles Johnston on July 8, 1898, in Nebraska. The family made their home there until they moved to Washtucna in 1941. Mr. Johnston died in 1961. Two sons had preceded their father in death, Wilforn in 1956 and Wendall in 1959. Since 1959 Mrs. Johnston had lived in rest homes, the last two years in Hillcrest manor. She was a member of the Methodist church and of the Rebekah lodge. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Clifford Pounds of Post Falls, Ida.; Mrs. John Keogh of Vancouver; Mrs. Elmer Ruppert of Othello; Mrs. Robert McKnight of Richland; and Mrs. Edna Dakin of Ketchikan, Alaska. Also surviving are five sons, Neal and Marshall Johnston of Washtucna; Newell Johnston of Hatton; Ray Johnston of Bellevue; and Roy Johnston of Ritzville. There are 28 surviving grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The Rev. James Updike conducted the service. Burial was in the Washtucna cemetery. Pallbearers were Gal, Keith, Gary, Burdett and Charles Johnston, Frank Dakin, Jon McKnight and Gordon Ruppert. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, April 30, 1964 None Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 7, 1964 Mrs. R. Borth Laid to Rest on Tuesday Mrs. Rudolph Borth was laid to rest Tuesday following funeral services at the Congregational church in Lind. She died Saturday at the age of 63 years following a heart attack. Barbara Ottmar was born April 9, 1901, in Russia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Ottmar. As a baby she moved with her family to America. She lived at Ruff until her marriage on Dec. 19, 1922, to Mr. Borth. The newly-weds began married life in the Lind vicinity. She lived on a farm near Paha until retiring to Lind in 1949. Her husband and five children survive. There are three daughters, Mrs. George (Eleanor) Pence of Lind; Mrs. Reinhold (Gloria) Sackmann of Lind; and Mrs. Donald (Barbara) Van Buren of Lewiston, Ida. Two sons, Victor of Lind and Cleve of East Wenatchee survive. Also surviving is her mother, Mrs. Jacob Ottmar of Odessa, six brothers and two sisters. The sisters are Mrs. Jake Schmauder, Davenport and Mrs. Archie Zickler, Marlin. Brothers surviving are John and Jake Ottmar of Colfax; Chris Ottmar of Coulee City; Bill Ottmar of Brewster; Ben Ottmar of Davenport; and Rynold Ottmar of Spokane. Nineteen grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Borth was a member of Zion Congregational church at Lind. That church's Rev. R. Kirschenmann conducted the funeral. Milton Sackmann sang "Going Down the Valley" and "God Understands." Mrs. Orville Moeller was organ accompanist. Pallbearers were Ernest Heider, William Sackmann, William F. Wahl, Ruben Knodel, Rudolph Sauer and William Strohmaier. Burial was in the Lind cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 14, 1964 Kalkwarf Rites Set at Zion Church Today Henry E. E. Kalkwarf died Monday at Hillcrest manor at the age of 80. His death followed illness of many years duration. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock today at Zion Congregational church. He was born Dec. 15, 1883, at Minonk, Ill., the son of Dirk and Tethe Kalkwarf. He attended Ritzville grade school through the eighth grade, then attended the high school part of Whitman college for two years. He then enrolled at Oberlin college in Ohio from which he graduated. His marriage to Kate Baumgart took place in Lind. His wife survives him in Ritzville, and their daughter, Mrs. Frances Hunter of Riverside, Ill. There are three grandchildren, Kathy, Carl E., and Kenneth Hunter. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Thresa Deyer and Mrs Mattie Rector of Bend, Ore. Three brothers survive, Pete of Portland, Ore., Ray of St. Louis, Mo., and O. J. of Ritzville. Also surviving are three half sisters, Amanda Dennson, Portland; Dorothy Jackson, Walla Walla, and Helen Pratt, Wenatchee; and a half brother, Arthur Kalkwarf of Everett. The deceased had lived in Ritzville most of the 73 years since he came to Washington. He spent the past 20 years here and prior to that had operated an elevator and store at Benge for 16 years, had lived in Spokane for four years and at Marcellus three years. He served in the county treasurer's office here four years, and in the county clerk's office four years. He was a member of Zion Congregational church and of the IOOF lodge at Benge. The Rev. Beryl Melcher will conduct the funeral service. Burial will be at the Lind cemetery. K. K. Scott Rites Saturday Graveside services for Kenneth King Scott will be held at Ritzville Memorial cemetery at 2 o'clock Saturday. Scott died at his home in Spokane Tuesday. He was born to Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Scott on a farm near Ritzville Aug. 20, 1902. He attended school here until 1920 when the family moved to Olympia where he was graduated from high school. He attended WSU where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He spent most of his life working in and around Spokane. Surviving are his wife, Genevieve, at home; and two daughters, Mrs. Dona Cassady of Austin, Nev.; and Mrs. Janice McNeilly of Colfax. There are also three step sons surviving, Donald and Harold Hubble of Spokane; and Gene Hubble of Seattle. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and four sisters. The sisters are Mrs. Anna King, Pullman; Mrs. Wilma Harris, Spokane; Mrs. Alma Galbreath, Ritzville; and Mrs. Verna Gahley, Billings, Mont. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 21, 1964 Joe Schragg Funeral Rites Held at Salem Joe L. Schragg, once a farmer west of Ritzville, died earlier this month at Salem, Ore., his home. Schragg moved to Oregon in 1926. He and Mrs. Schragg would have observed their golden wedding anniversary next year. Miss Carrie Schragg, Ritzville, a sister, learned of her brother's serious illness while attending a convention of the National Association of Bank Women in Olympia. She reached Salem a couple of days before his death. A son, two daughters and four grandchildren survive. Schragg was buried at McMinnville, near Salem. A. Dryden Dies at Ellensburg Ardelle Dryden, 67, former Ritzville resident, died May 7 at Ellensburg where he operated the Dean apartments for many years. He was born at Walla Walla on Feb. 5, 1897. He was married to Minnie Bierman in 1930 at Ritzville where he and his mother operated the Hotel Davis, then known as the Dessert Hotel. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1959. He is survived by one brother, Walter Minor, of Seattle. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, May 28, 1964 Mary Kisler Funeral Held Here Monday Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Kisler were held Monday at Zion Congregational church. She was 86 years of age and had lived most of her life in this county. She was in poor health the past two years. Mary Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Miller, was born at Culbertson, Nebr., Aug. 26, 1883. She was married to John Kisler at Ritzville April 13, 1903. The newlyweds took up farming at Cunningham. They came to Ritzville to live in 1920, farming five miles west of town. Mr. Kisler died July 3, 1957. Three children survive, Mrs. Doris Evans, Leavenworth; Harold H. Kisler, Coatesville, Pa.; and Ralph Kisler, Ritzville. There are eight grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Ida Haag of Portland, Ore.; and a brother, Elmer Miller of Seattle. Mrs. Kisler was a member of Zion Congregational church and of its Mary Circle. The Rev. Alex Rehn and the Rev. Beryl Melcher conducted the funeral service. Pallbearers were Solomon Adler, Calvin Miller, Wayne Anderson, Marvin Schoessler, Frank Miller and Henry Leisle. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 4, 1964 Early-Day Artist, Eugenia J. Brown, Laid to Rest Here Eugenia J. Brown, many years ago a private art teacher in Adams county, was laid to rest here Wednesday, June 3. "Grandma Gene," as she was affectionately known, was 106 years old when she died May 27 in Seattle. She had been active in her own house work and as a teacher until she suffered a storke about three weeks earlier. She was born May 9, 1858, at boquet, N.Y. She moved to LeSueur, Minn., in 1883 after her marriage to Fred E. Putnam. Six children were born there, only one of whom is now living, Mrs. George Whitten of Seattle. The family lived here for some years prior to 1908. She taught art at Ritzville, Hatton and Lind. Her oil paintings are hung in homes across the nation. In 1915 she married S. L. Brown of Pullman, a pioneer homesteader there. He died in 1949 and Mrs. Brown moved then to Seattle. The Rev. James Updike conducted funeral services at the Danekas chapel here Wednesday afternoon. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 11, 1964 Funeral Services for Louis Arlt Held at Colfax Funeral services for Louis F. Arlt, 74, former Ritzville resident, were held Thursday at the Peace Lutheran church. He died at his home near Colfax on June 1. The Rev. Carl Schulz officiated at the services. Burial was in the Colfax cemetery. Born in Ritzville, he spent his early life in this area and was married to Lydia Ann Roeders on Feb. 9, 1911. They lived in Spokane from 1935 until they moved to the Lacrosse area in 1950, where they farmed until 1956 when he retired. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran church. Mrs. Arlt died in 1962. Survivors include two sons, Eldred Arlt of Walla Walla and Clarence of Colfax; seven brothers, William, Herman, John and Carl, all of Ritzville; Edward of Crescent, B.C.; Henry of Chewelah; and Albert of Addy; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Bauer of Ritzville and Mrs. Ella Haase of Kettle Falls. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 18, 1964 D. N. Kembel Funeral Today Funeral services for Delbert Norman Kembel will be held at the Danekas chapel here today at 2 o'clock. Kembel died Saturday night from a shotgun wound sustained in the utility room of his employer, Marion Lamb, Winona. Lamb has been charged with first degree murder by Whitman county officers. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Kembel of Ritzville; by three children; a sister, Mrs. Wallace Mudd of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; and by four brothers. The brothers are Leroy of Deer Park, Alton of Cheney, Robert of Mulino, Ore., and Howard of Deer Park. The children's names are Billy, Jimmy and Kay. The Rev. Albert Wagner will conduct the funeral. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery. Kembel was 49 years of age. Son of Klatts Lake Victim Brian David, next to the youngest of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Klatt, drowned in Pend Oreille lake Monday night. The Klatt family lived in Ritzville when Klatt was manager here for Big Bend Electric cooperative. Their home is now at Garfield bay near Sandpoint, Ida. The four-and-a-half-year-old boy was missed by his parents at 7 p.m. Monday. Sheriff's officers were notified at 11 p.m. The boy's body was found washed up on the lake shore at Garfield bay at 5:30 Tuesday morning. Surviving besides David's parents are five sisters and four brothers. The child's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Klatt and Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Powers live in Spokane. Mrs. Steelman Funeral Today Funeral services will be held today at 11 o'clock for Rebecca Catherine Stalman. She died Monday at Hillcrest manor where she had been a resident for three years. She was 89 years of age. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Entze VanderEnden of Sprague; two brothers, James Tedder of Centralia and Elihue Tedder of Kentucky; and two grandchildren, Robert and Thomas Mitchell. Elder Ronald Kegly of the Seventh-day Adventist church will conduct the funeral at the Danekas chapel. Graveside Rites Held Wednesday for Mrs. Pertain Graveside services for Mrs. Nettie Harris Pertain were held at the Ritzville cemetery Wednesday. Mrs. Pertain was the first child born in Ritzville, her nephew, S. E. Edwards said. Her parents were Jared M. and Augusta Harris. She died at the Swedish hospital in Seattle Monday from the effects of a broken hip she suffered in a fall. She was born here in 1882 and had reached the age of 82. Her first husband, Dave Pettijohn, was an early-day printer on a weekly newspaper here. Edwards said she moved to Seattle with her husband about 50 years ago. She was employed in the Seattle public library for 40 years before her retirement. The Rev. James Updike conducted the service. Danekas Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Isaac W. Ensz Death is Told Funeral services for Isaac W. Ensz will be held at the Menno Mennonite church Saturday at 2 o'clock. Ensz died Monday at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane. He formerly lived at Lind where for many years he operated a garage and repair shop. His health forced him to retire in 1951. In recent years he has been living with a sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Eden at Valleyford. Surviving besides his sister are three nephews, Loren and Vernon Eden of Valleyford and Richard Eden of Spokane. Ensz was 71 years of age. Burial will be in the Menno cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, June 25, 1964 Fred G. Slipper Succumbs June 19 Burial was at Greenacres Memorial park at Bellingham for Fred G. Slipper who passed away at Ritzville June 19. Fred G. Slipper, born at Norfolk, England, on Dec. 12, 1870, came to Canada about 20 years ago. Two years later he moved to Hamilton and operated a general merchandise store until retiring in 1925. He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude on Sept. 29, 1960. He is survived by two sons, Thomas and Fred A. Slipper, and one daughter, Lorna S. Moitvret; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
